It’s so frustrating to see prizes which carry so much reputation to be popularity contests. Both Ronaldo and Messi could cut their amount of individual awards in half had they been awarded based on merit and not popularity.

All these top players such as Modric, Kane, Mbappe, Lewa and tons of others who voted for Messi know one-dimensional players like Haaland are nothing compared to players like Messi, Maradona etc. regardless of how many tap-ins they score.
Even the Portugal coach put Messi above Haaland not to mention managers from Brazil, Italy etc. choosing him as no.1.

This is actually quite funny. For all their titles, nobody cares about City. I’m Canadian and I see very few City fans. I see some on social media but they’re the kind who’ll cheer city and post “hala Madrid” later that afternoon.

just think back to 2013, regardless of who you think should win, FIFA actually REOPENED the voting because they did not like the results they had. Can you believe that? Ribéry and his entourage were rightfully fuming. But now 11 years later few people remember or care.
That year was a disgrace, many other years have been a disgrace. The entire award is a disgrace and should just disappear from the game.

Really odd one as it's really hard to argue how Messi deserves it. One thing it tells us though is despite living in this age of stats and the balance heavily tilted towards function and efficiency, it's nice to see that the footballers themselves are still left a bit cold by it all. Haaland is a machine but he just lacks in the area that a lot of footballers and footballing people have always valued and from the looks of it, continue to value.

They must have been confused due to the changes in Ballon Dor criteria which changed it from calender year to last season. Footballers aren't exactly smart.
