Rightly or wrongly, I guess the rationale behind paying that was that, if you look at other fees of some of the current English talent who didn't have a year left on their contracts -- Maguire, Rice, Grealish, etc - they were going for £80m-100m, so it was him having a year left that made him available and for £60m? SImilar to Chelsea signing Sterling in his last year for £50m.

Of course, whether we actually needed that kind of player, and whether Mount is at the same comparative level as Rice and Grealish is also up for debate. As is whether it needed to be an English player with the added 'English tax...' or if we couldn't have got better elsewhere?

The links aren't that strong in the sense that United are merely monitoring their situations. With Davies in particular, there's no chance of United getting him as the player's preference is to join Real Madrid and then stay in Bayern Munich. Jonathan David has a ton of suitors, none of whom are advanced in any way, whilst we have heavy competition for Kimmich in Manchester City and PSG.

It’s not necessarily a bad move though, and it’s nice that we seem to be being proactive planning for the summer and not reacting last minute as per.
Like I said also not bad players to be linked with, whether we get them or not.

We're not getting Davies under any circumstance. David has been a meh Ligue 1 player on the edge of his contract with plenty of "suitors" but no takers for years now.

Kimmich is another player who's given his best years to the Bundesliga and probably wants a last payday. For the right fee it could be a decent Casemiro replacement but he'll have better offers than us.

Also any talk about targets when the sporting director is still Murtough and the manager is still ETH means nothing to me.

To be fair, we've been doing that for the past couple of years ever since Murtough became a director and Richard Arnold the CEO. The problem has been the Glazers holding back our budget (thanks to Woodward and co.'s terrible spending) on top of their involvement slowing down our whole process. We also weren't helped by ten Hag wanting his own preferred targets rather than players who were scouted for past managers.

All of that should change with the new leadership given that we won't need to wait a day or two more for their involvement.

With the number of players needed it makes sense to maximise our budget considering the FFP impacts but I doubt we’re only looking at these types of players. Nothing wrong with canny investment.

We should be in for free agents, 1yr left, wonderkids and superstars. Having any kind of myopic approach is daft.

In general, we should be looking for talented footballers with good character suited to a style of play we are trying to implement.

That seems promising. It'll be nice to give the new guys enough time to setup before the summer and plan out a strategy with the manager. If Berrada starts in the summer and there's been no noise around the DOF appointment, it's a bit concerning that we'll spend another year doing random shit.

I really like the look of this guy. I know he has had a real purple patch which you wouldn't expect to last but even ignoring that he scores something like 1 in 3. He seems to score different types of goals, always seems calm in front of goal and contributes in the build up. He does a heel chop and spin to trigger attacks which seems pretty effective. For the money it's a no-brainer.

That's 1 in 3 in Germany. You'd expect a drop-off if he came to the PL. Definitely a purple patch, his scoring had dropped off in his last 6 games before Christmas. He's had injuries and International duty so he hasn't played for Stuttgart since 20th Dec.

We'll see how the rest of the season goes but if it is only 17m it wouldn't be a bad option.

I’d honestly take Welbeck to backup Hojlund

I want Hojlund to keep getting minutes and improving

Welbeck is an experienced player now and great at pressing from the front

Could be an option. If we want to «clear the path» for Hojlund, I would prefer bringing in another young striker like him. Providing him real competition and pushing both forward. Would also put the eggs in more than one basket. Someone like that Zirkzee, Gimenez or Sesko (but I understand that Sesko is probably too expensive).

I would love it if we got Ferguson as well then we genuinely could play 2 up top when tactics allow it

Wouldn't be the worst player to bring on defending a lead, but you'd hate to have to turn to him when you actually need a goal.

Toney starts every game - fact, especially if any team has to pay >£60mill for him.

I just can't see Hojlund going from our starter and showing improvement, to suddenly seeing him as playing second fiddle to Toney. I can't see us suddenly going two up top.

Definitely need a striker - but I feel it'll be someone who would understand that it'll be a mix of starting and being benched.

From the sounds of things INEOS/Ratcliffe want to move away us from these type of signings. I'd love Toney but don't want to overpay either. Definitely going to be more due dilligence going forward (hopefully)

So play 2 strikers then. Bin Bruno, sign a proper RW and go back to the old 4-4-2. Or alternatively switch to 3-5-2 and sign Frimpong as a proper RWB. Inter are showing that you can play free-flowing football in a 3-5-2. Atalanta scored for fun in the formation 2 years ago.
