How are Kevin Spacey, Louis CK, James Franco, etc. doing these days?

Let alone the fact that you have crowds chanting "Die Greenwood" and players calling him a rapist, and that's in Spain, not even in his home country where the consensus seems to be that conditions will be harsher.

I think your outlook is based on hope rather than reality.
I had no idea why he was caught up in something prior to this post. It did make me think that I've not seen him in a long time.

Sorry to disappoint you, bud, but I accept that he is not going to be allowed back due to the external pressures and the age we live in. My wish would be that he be given a chance to play for us.

I fully believe in giving him a chance at redemption. From what evidence was there in the public domain: there was an audio and there were pictures. The audio was surely uncomfortable to hear and it had him come across as a 19 year old immature douche-bag pestering his girlfriend for sex. Do I think it was disgusting? Sure. Do I think he should be banished to the purgatory for eternal life based on that audio? The answer is no.

Then there were those pictures. Again disturbing, but I don't know the context of those injuries. And then he was exonerated by the cops after a lengthy investigation, which to me suggests that there is more to it then it meets the eye. And now they seem to be together and have had a child, who was conceived much after he was suspended. If his GF has forgiven him, who am I to hold it against him. I can't be outraged for her.

But it's okay, he is just one player. I wish that he regrets whatever mistakes he made and learns from them. And I hope he has a good career and does justice to his wife and kid.

So you wish he fails as a footballer if he is not back here? I am sorry, but that's just childish.

As for looking idiotic, no way. This is the age of social media, people love to take a moral stand and prove they are better than others when it comes to setting standards for others.
Your second and third paragraphs disappoint me, well done.

It's too early in the morning to take your post apart, I'll get back to it later.

How many times does it need to be said that he was NOT exonerated by the police?

Exonerated? More like abandoned because he got married to the victim and she didn’t want to co-operate.

There is a case around how much punishment is enough but let’s not rewrite history. Also you are only making this argument because he is a promising player. Had he been Bebe level, you wouldn’t have bothered.

This thread has made me realise that other people have massively different ideals to myself. I’m shocked to be honest. The language some people use to describe the circumstances has been a huge surprise to me. Makes you wonder about the world in general.

"In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.

"We have explained our decision to all parties."

Okay, not exonerated. However, they didn't think the case warranted further investigation after the withdrawal and "new material" coming to light.

I am not going to assume he is a rapist or what not because the internet or some fecking idiot football player thinks so.

Wouldn't have bothered as in? Him not joining the club. Of course I would have preferred that we sell him. Why would I want us keep a shit player. McTom is a half decent player and comes across as a gentleman, I still want him sold.

People keep making this stupid reference as in whoever wants redemption for Greenwood would have happily burned anyone else at stake; but no I would have hoped for redemption for a "Bebe level player" too. Again a case of making yourself feel better by assuming things about others which are not true.

He actually isn't vanished to the purgatory for eternal life. He got his second chance in La Liga, the highest division in Spain and one of the strongest football competitions in the world, just purged out of United.

"the age we live in", meaning the wokeratti are now in control - check
he was just a horny teenager - check
imbecilic exaggeration as to what the actual "punishment" has been - check
where's the "context" to the girl's injuries, huh? - check
wrong interpretation of the termination of the investigation - check
his girl has forgiven him/had his child - check

He literally didn't miss a single one, did he?

Nope he didn't, it's unbelievable. Lucky @moses isn't around yet, he'll have a field day with that one!

Like with everything, people will be outraged until they forget. Zouma kicked a cat, [Irrelevant point - unless we are talking about F1] killed someone, and nobody cared. Same with Greenwood - for the first few weeks people will boo and jeer, and eventually they'll stop caring. For me the club should just bring him back and ignore the noise.

Louis CK is back on the comedy circuit. Kevin Spacey has a major film release coming in March this year. Franco is shooting a Film set for release. Huw Edward's has made a BBC return (albeit not in the coveted 10 o' clock news spot) since his suspension.

Marktan is actually correct in the sense that eventually noise dies down and people focus on the next attention grabbing scandal. This is especially true if they have not been criminally prosecuted. For the mainstream, most people have probably have forgotten who Mason is; it's not fresh in their face.

If INEOS wanted to; they could bring back and eventually noise would die down after a few weeks aside from jeering opposition fans. But whether it is morally acceptable and the right thing to do is a completely different debate.

That view point excludes worrying about United’s own staff, those pesky women might complain, male staff who understand the context (or perhaps have had first hand experiences with DV), fans never mind away grounds. If anyone thinks that those fans who feel strongly about it now are going to sit quietly whilst he plays, then you’re very mistaken. Plus by all accounts he’s not very well liked anyway by some staff. It’s all hassle that INEOS don’t need when everything else is very positive messaging. They need this topic just to go away.

by the way, I haven’t watched any Kevin spacey stuff, or James Franco stuff. Those idiots are dead to me. Their careers will never be the same again and rightly so

I think the majority of fans including the match going fans would just match the consensus and tone of the media. If he didn't go on loan to Getafe and came straight back the controversy would be deafening. But a year on, with no criminal conviction and a family with the woman involved is a very different scenario. I doubt you would see an anti-greenwood physical protest from Manchester united fans.
You are right that the women's team may take action. You are also right that INEOS might not want to deal with any of it at all; though I think MG is worth about 80 million in terms of utility to our club (not selling value) so they may have second thoughts.

This is where i disagree, not just this post as I’ve seen this posted before.
Those people who feel strongly now are not going to feel any different just because he scores goals or the media paints a different narrative. They already know what kind of person he is. Their viewpoint won’t change.
I think maybe you’re underestimating that point

I think you're wrong though. Humans as a species tend to follow the "mass". It's in our nature. Which is why the media holds so much power in this day and age.

There’s been a lot of anti-media focus in this thread - often painting the ‘media’, Rachel Riley, Crafton or others as boogeymen who are propagating the issue or having an overly determinative factor, and it’s all a bit flawed for me. Even if you say well United clearly reversed their decision as a result of media/staff/fan response… that is Uniteds issue/failing/decision and those commentators have every right to express themselves on a significant and public matter, provided it was respectful of the court process at the time.

Of course media focus matters but it’s a bit chicken and egg. If the audio and images and investigations didn’t exist, it wouldn’t be reported or commented on as extensively and yet those things deserve focus, because they do in fact exist and can’t unfortunately be disappeared as many would wish.

People will naturally care less about anything as time goes on. However to say fans won’t care in the future if the media don’t make a fuss seems a bit dodgy to me.

I don’t think it’s accurate and in any case it removes the agency of people to have their own opinions and it seems like a bit of a backhanded way of saying, can’t we all just forget about it, if not for the pesky media he’d still play here etc.

It completely bypasses the actual issue of people not wanting him to play here for ethical reasons and shifts the focus to some sort of unfair witch hunt scenario driven or controlled by ‘the media’.

If that’s your take then have at it, but it’s a poor one.

I’m not at all sure what kind of reception, response or protest would happen if he was coming back, I hope we never have to find out. I think those professing to know either way are very silly, given the details of how that could happen, whether there would be further disclosure, what the club/greenwood would say re his return are all unknown/not considered/subject entirely to guesswork.

Am I? I think it’s ignorant to ignore and think that everyone will just conform. What the heck!? It’s not China or Russia.

I mean, yeah they are still working, but Marktan is not correct at all. Franco and Spacey were major hollywood actors. Spacey's new movie, from what i can tell based on a quick wikipedia check, is limited release in Italy and straight-to-video in Russia. Hardly the same echelon as before, is it? And Franco's movie will be released in France. Hardly the hollywood blockbusters he was used to.

Which is actually a perfect parallel for Greenwood - he still plays football; but just not at the biggest club in the biggest league in the world.

As for the bolded, that is just ridiculous. He has been back in Spain for months and a player just called him a rapist! After several months! And you think in England that "the noise" will die down in a matter of weeks? Insanity.

Ha yeah same. I found out last week from Instagram or tiktok, someone explained why Seth Rogan ended his friendship with James Franco.

It would silly from a negotiation perspective to admit that United don't want him back.
Yeah, but the premise here is that United don't want him back and that this is known.

Of course, you could operate with a scenario in which United do want him back - but could consider letting him go if the price is right.

In which case...et cetera.

But the scenario most operate with is that United want to sell him because they don't want him back (and that this position on United's part is known by potential buyers).

In fact - one might add - the scenario in which United want him back but also - possibly - want to sell him seems very far fetched.

Either United want to bring him back (and then, one has to assume, offer him a new contract) - or they are willing to sell him at whatever price they can get before his current contract runs out.

In the latter scenario (by far the most likely scenario,) he isn't worth a lot of money (relatively, of course) for all kinds of reasons.

Why would Getafe be his level when he previously excelled at Manchester United (as a teenager no less) ? Therefore if not United, it would seem that another big club of comparable stature would be his level - Madrid, Barca, Athletico, Juve, Bayern, PSG would be among the suitors. If there is a perception that bigger clubs aren't after him in the present, its more so due to the fan protest risk they would want to avoid taking on, not his capability as a footballer.
You're going to completely ignore everything I said and then have the nerve to ask why I think Getafe will be his level?

Read what I said.

I never even mentioned his reputation or the..incident, purely based on how he's been playing.
He lost over a year of his most important years as a young player and will be a year older next season, he's past being a "young up and comer" by modern standards.

Elite players with an obviously glorious career ahead of them, (meaning the Mbappe's, Osimhen's, Owen, Rooney types) are expected to be setting the world on fire by 23, not finding yet another club or loan.

Greenwood will be a good player, someone who will be remembered like Nani - a good player people say had talent but never quite reached their potential.

My bad. He lives with is partner and they are raising a daughter together. My point still stands. A woman living with her partner and raising a child with him is hardly going to testify against said partner. He was not exonerated.

I don’t really talk about this much but for me the situation is clear.

Mason at the very least made a big mistake and I don’t think any of us will ever know the real truth or nuances. The cost of that mistake is that he can never play for Manchester United again. Considering what was at stake, the fact that he can still have a career at the top level is enough of a second chance for me.
For everyone’s health I think it’s time to stop the hate, the bickering and the what ifs and just accept the situation for what it is. There are far more important things in life than the fate of a footballer that ultimately created this situation for himself.

As for the club, the best we can hope for is a quality swap deal plus some cash to donate to charity. If we receive a fee, there will be a lot of external pressure which will just increase exposure on it all again.

Personally I’m just ready to move away from it now. I respect everyone else’s opinion.

What’s with this charity stuff? We are hit heavily by FFP and every cent needs to count from now on.

It’s optics isn’t it. The clubs reputation is more important and we can’t really be seen to be profiting from this. I know the argument would be that we’re selling him for cheap compared to his footballing ability but at this point it’s past that, it was the moment this whole thing wasn’t about football.

I’m sure there will be different opinions on this and all are valid, I’m just looking at the likeliest option. Especially now we have a huge company like Ineos in our corner because it’s their optics too, which is even more important to them due to their line of work.

Dig up stupid!
We wouldn't be profiting from the fallout of the controversy, we'd be profiting from the many years of investment in mason, his training, travel, accommodation and health care. Not to mention recovering some of the wages we've paid whilst he was unable to play through his own personal issues.

We have charity partners and foundations of our own that we contribute to significantly every year. There's absolutely no chance any funds from masons transfer will go anywhere but into the club's coffers

And we wouldn't be profiting anything anyway, we'll get bent over on the fee and receive nothing close to a figure representative of his actual football abilities value

Don't taze me, bro
If the only offer that comes in for him is 10 million or something, I wonder if the club would weigh triggering his extension, loaning him again (perhaps to a club better than Getafe), and hoping for a bidding war to get 40-50 million next summer, knowing there’s not much opportunity cost (I.e., club is unlikely to get any less than 10 mil next summer). It’s a lot of FFP difference.

I expect that the more likely use for this scenario is as a threat to make sure Athleti or other bidders this summer don’t bid too far below market, but it does strike me as an interesting bit of game theory - regardless of whether people dislike thinking of it that way.

From a PR perspective, the bottom line is that he never plays for United again, and I suspect that’s what the majority of fans care about most.

I can see you accepting a "low" bit of around 20 mil but with a huge sell on %.

There are all sorts of opinions in this thread but I don't think I've seen anyone suggest they would have a problem with United selling him and reinvesting the cash (speak up if I'm wrong!).

I'm of the opinion that it's even still possible for him to return to Old Trafford, but it would need some kind of interview with him and his partner otherwise it would likely be the same reaction as before so it's up to them to decide how much they want to return to England.
