Hopefully nothing serious having him and Licha injured really cripples ourselves to play from the back.

Alphonso Davies contract has one year left to run in the summer, we absolutely need a reliable and class full back, Shaw can be back up, just too injury prone.
That would be the absolute dream, although doubt he'd be up for it. Shaw can cover for Davies & Martinez.

Was ok in the 1st half. Struggled initially with leaving too much space for Bailey then got a bit tighter. As usual when pressed, he's on his heels and launches a crappy lofted ball down the channel, which Rashford or anybody near there have to do really well to control or do anything with it.

People need to start watching closer. I read all these 'fantastic ball playing defender, press resistant and so calm' but it's far from the truth. He's very capable but that's not his regular level. We're a better team with him in it but that's also by default due to his experience and comfort in the team. His injury issues are also very worrying.

Absolutely, overrated and a constant liability in defence when he is available which isn't all that often. He is one of those players longest at the club who should set standards and drive the younger players but he isn't that. He has lost a yard or two in pace as well and that is terrible news because his positioning is not good at all. One of the positions we need to address next summer.

A notable difference when he came off. Very good player but unfortunately, not reliable.

I said it in another thread that our priority, along with a midfielder and attacking player, should be a left back.

We need a new top class left back, and we can use Shaw as a back up, both at left back and left centre back.
It might actually be that his career should be in that position as he gets older, whether it's here or elsewhere. His taking on pacy wingers and getting forward to support the attack is naturally going to decline as he gets older and still has the injuries.

Luke shaw is an elite left back however his body and the injuries they’ve suffered during his 10 year stay at United is not elite, I love the guy but it’s time to buy another quality left back like Theo Hernandez. Simple question Villa options at left back Moreno and Digne are better options than our with Shaw and Malacia even though Shaw might be the best left back of the four. Arsenal and City play with inverted full backs and Newcastle have yep of the best young full/wing backs in PL in Tino Livremento and Lewis Hall.

Liverpool also have far better options with Tsimikas and Robertson. United have sent Regulon back and Are about to sell Alvero Fernandez. With the huge demand on full/wing backs you really do need 5 and United have 4 with 2 or 3 always injured.

Our biggest upgrade next season should be a new CF followed by two full backs:wingbacks and then a CB followed by CM.

We should sell Tyril Malacia annd Lindelof for £20m combined and buy Frimpong and Theo Hernandez.

We should keep Dalot, Shaw and AWB Dalot can play left or right back and has proved his worth this season.

Can a player be considered world class if they only play 25 games a season? I'm not sure anymore.

He's probably our most talented player, has the best touch of any of the squad and despite playing for a decade still has pace to burn. But who cares when he spends half a season injured? It means we have no consistency, no patterns, no ability to create a single image of the team.

It's so frustrating. He could have been the best in the world - hell anytime he plays 10 matches in a row he probably is - but that happens once every five seasons.

Said it in Transfer Forum that we need a new LB more than RB. But most don't even consider LB as something to look for. Just amusing.

If we got another good left-back in, we’d also have the option to use Shaw as cover for Martinez at left center back more often. He can provide a lot of the same ball playing ability there, but as it is right now we simply lose too much quality at LB if we move him there.

Shaw at his best is miles better than Dalot at his best.
Dalot is still 24. Shaw is 28. One still hasn't reach his prime age means can still develop to be better player, while the other one has reached his prime age means I can't see any further improvement in Shaw. To top it all, Dalot isn't injury prone while Shaw is injury prone. I think we need right back to cover Dalot's role (may be sign KWP who might be available cheaper) but I have concern with our starting left back's availability. The back four is part of important structure for any team's build up play, it is important to have them fit in majority season.

Yes. Well, doesn't need to be him but you get the idea that we shouldn't need to spend more than 20m on a right back for Dalot's backup but we might need to invest more on the left back if our left back keeps giving us injuries problems.

Good player, but I've just about had enough of his constant injuries. You need to be available first and foremost. I have no hope for Malacia either, so this is yet another position that needs looking at in the summer, I think.

He is too injury prone for someone who hardly ever runs at full speed.

He's good when fit, but nowhere near world class. Maybe in the season leading to the world cup, but nothing about his performances this season scream world class.

He is reasonably sound 1 vs 1, and fine in possession but his level has also dropped against recent years. Not to the extent he's a problem, but we should stay on the lookout for better long-term options.

World class is such an arbitrary term. He's one of our better players and normally when he's fit we play a lot better.

A bit like Varane, the issue is another knock always seems around the corner. And we don't have the appropriate profile in the club to instantly switch him in.

Sure, but we are hardly a world class/great team and we happen to have no competition in his position. I wonder if you think he's as good as he was a few seasons ago, where he would really dominate from the left.
I think at one point he was in the top 5 players in Europe for chances created. I think he's nowhere near that player now.

I feel like this season Dalot contributes a lot more to our attack than Shaw does.

A big part of that is because he just can't stay fit enough for long enough to collate these stats anymore!

But I do agree to some extent, this was my post earlier in this thread. Whenever Shaw is fit, he's done more in the first third of the pitch than he has getting up and down overlapping Rashford like he used.
Yeah, I think it's a mix of ten Hag's tactics and Shaw's own body: the endurance to get up and down in the way he used to has been whittled away with the constant injuries. We rely way less on him to progressively carry the ball and far more on his passing and general composure in the first half of the field.

Feeling might be down to Dalot having played 22 matches, while Shaw is on 11...
And to extent the context - or attack is the 12th best in the league in terms of goals, 11th best in terms of xG.

Generally though, I agree - with his injury record, we might indeed be better off bringing in a better LB instead of fiddling with the RB position.

If he were available for a decent fee and willing to leave Milan, he'd be an excellent signing.

I rate Shaw, but we need someone a bit more reliable. In the past we have signed the likes of Telles and Malacia as competition for him, but I'd like us to go out and sign the best left back we realistically can. Whether that's Hernandez, Davies, or someone else, I'm not sure. We can use Shaw as cover for the new left back and Martinez. After a year or two, I'd then be looking to promote Amass.

Totally agree Shaw is simply not fit enough but he’s so good when fit he should be a part of the squad who can play left back or left centre back going forward.

I love him but Shaw's injury record worries me, and he always takes a while to get going again after injury.

Theo Hernandez would be an excellent signing, every time I watch Milan he always stands out, he also played fantastically at the World Cup, when his brother got injured.

I don't see Malacia as the future, so I'd sell him, get Theo, and use Shaw as cover for Left Back and Left Center Back.

Yet Dalot himself is at respectable 2G+3A this season. Way ahead of our other full backs at least

I’ve seen this happen for too long now, he takes an age to look up and see what’s on the 9/10 scoops a ball down the line. Frustrating to say the least.

It was a debate back in the day that Roy Keane should have moved to playing as a centre back as he got older and after his hip surgery, especially after some good performances there (Juventus away in particular). I didn't agree with it but I understood the argument. I can't help but wonder if it might be in Shaw's interest if he were to play as a left centre back permanently. It'd probably be less taxing on his body and he's more than capable of being a good centre back (against City last season was a good example).

I don't think the left back situation can continue as it is. I hope he's back soon but the club need to think about that position going forward.

He was steadfastly defending Mount elsewhere. A guy who literally hasn't had a good half of football for us yet.

Should have him on the bench for this weekend. Don't think Shaw is cut out for playing week in and week out anymore. Would make sense to sell him in the summer and recoup some money that could be spent on a first choice LB or if you can move on Malacia for decent money then do that have Shaw as an impact sub. Would rather go with the first option (even though I think Shaw is one of the very few world class players in the side) because Malacia would still be able to do a job and have some value in the future, whereas from an FFP perspective (at this point, Im guessing whatever we get for Shaw is going to be recorded as profit) Shaw would give us the better balance to our books.
