Because I rate him, and he shows (rare) glimpses of having really good finishing (that Newcastle away game springs to mind).

I'd say the same thing about Hojlund by the way, and I'm sure lots of people would have the same "why?" response to. Just think he's got it in him.

Obviously I may well be wrong, Once upon a time I was convinced Ricky Van Wolfswinkel would tear it up in the Premier League....
It was more the "only a matter of time" that made it sound like it's a certainty. Which it doesn't really look like at the moment.

You can criticise his finishing and all, but there's one area where he's elite and that's his ability to escape obvious bookings for dissent while acting like a dickhead. Last night he didn't get a single booking for booting the ball away long after the whistle, mouthing off and giving a sarcastic thumbs up towards the referee within five seconds.

You can clearly see his improvement there in a very short space of time since the United game where he actually did get booked for kicking the ball away.

If Nunez signed for united instead of Liverpool he'd have been completely destroyed by the media for 18 months of well below par football.

Heck Antony was getting pulled apart within weeks of joining United even though he scored in his few games.

But when it's a Liverpool player, they're given plenty of time to succeed or fail and come up with PR rubbish to keep pressure off eg Carragher tries to cover up nunezs failures by giving him nicknames like captain chaos.

He was hated en masse when he first started playing for Liverpool. Why not now? Maybe because he’s scored 5 and assisted 8 in the league while the shitheads sits top of the league. Even if his goal tally isnt big its still better than any United player I think.

Nunez is box office whether you like it or not.

Dangerously close to a red card most games, misses absolute sitters often but also capable of singlehandedly winning 10 man Liverpool a game away at Newcastle. Easy to see why he's not being "completely destroyed".

If Nunez was Liverpool’s great white hope for goals then he’d be getting a harder time from all corners. The reality is that Liverpool’s front 5 options all chip in, with Salah being a genuine monster. Nunez’s role in the team isn’t as high-stakes compared to United’s forwards as none of them are scoring so they’re rightly called out for it.

I do like him but his finishing is awful at times. Some of the chances yesterday were good saves, but a decent finisher would be on double figures by now in the league. His all round play has improved but we spent that money on a goal scorer and he hasn't done that consistently so far.

He has not done it at all.

The miss at Luton was probably the worst of the season in the top leagues.

Was it him or Trent that missed that sitter against Arsenal? Counter attack, ball laid off with just the keeper to beat?

Edit: Just rewatched the highlights, it was Trent. Amazing.

Yeah, high risk finish to get that ball up, over a standing GK and down under the crossbar again. Typical Darwin though, equally capable of the sublime and brainfart often within quick succession.
That was a sublime brainfart. It was by far the most difficult option. With his technical skills he probably makes that 5 out of 100. He slots it low, it´s probably 50 out of 100. He squares it to Jota for an empty-netter it´s probably 90 out of 100 a goal. So it really was a dumb choice.

I like him as a player but you've got to be a top side to carry him.

Young United striker has 11 goals from 29 playing in a side who have mostly been in meltdown, creating very few chances. Bedwetter:
He just doesn't have it.

Striker is a bit of problem position for the summer.
Other than being big and fast what are his outstanding attributes that people are hanging their hat on? Trying to see it.
He doesn't look a good finisher to me. He's not a clean striker of the ball.
He tries but we'll need a better striker if we're ever going to be successful again.

Liverpool striker who is 3 years further along in his development has 12 goals from 36 playing in a better side who create far more chances in an easier European competition, scores the one worldie he scores every few games for every 10 sitters he misses. Bedwetter:
He's come good as expected

God bless him for giving me a good reason to laugh at Liverpool despite them being "back".

As bad as so many of our transfers have been over the past decade, we've never spent 100m on a bloke who plays like David James that time City stuck him up front.
Absolutely clueless poster.

Not if his aim was to hit the crossbar. He ended up missing.

It's probably as well he's not a high percentage finisher, he's that effective elsewhere if he was scoring hatfuls of goals he'd be a superstar.

He’s a handful but he looks absolutely no where near a player that should have cost the money that was spent on him. Hojlund has only been in England 6 months and already looks vastly superior to him.

A few of us were saying this at the beginning of last season, but here we are. He genuinely might just be a bad finisher and it's not gonna get better outside maybe one random season. Looking at Fbref the data they have on him he finished poorly in every season bar one, the last with Benfica in which he went scorching hot. So chances are he will never get to superstar level. It's a genuinely weird one to see because seriously, here's a striker who isn't a world class monster entirely off being genuinely poor at converting chances???? Who the feck ever heard of that

There is what, 15 million between the fees paid. Not exactly a world away.

Nunez is certainly less refined but I imagine most centre halves would prefer to face Hojlund over Nunez.

Nevertheless, both are up there with the best CF prospects for the next 5 years.

14 goals and 11 assists now. I think all 14 might be match winners. That’s the way it seems anyway. Every goal seems to be a huge one. Incredible.

10 in the league. Pretty average really.
96th percentile for goals scored, 99th percentile for goal involvement, 97th for expected xG, 97th for non penalty xG.

Need to either go back to the maths textbooks to familiarise youself with what average means. Or just stop spouting data-free shite as fact on the caff.

I think the thing we're all missing is that he's scoring important goals, even if he misses chances. Liverpool don't need him to be a 30 goal a season striker because they have other players who can put the ball in the net: Salah, Jota, Diaz, etc. Darwin is like an upgraded version of Origi in that squad at the moment, which is perfectly fine for them. It's annoying but it's a team sport after all and what he offers works annoyingly well for them.

You can spout whatever nonsense you like. 10 league goals is OK, but nothing special.
Here you go, I‘ll draw you a diagram by cutting/pasting this from the footy stats analysis of his numbers since you’re clearly struggling to understand.

‘Darwin Nunez has scored 10 goals in 25 matches so far in the Premier League 2023/2024 season. 3 of the 10 goals were scored at home while he scored 7 goals at away games. Overall, Darwin Nunez's goals scored per 90 minutes is 0.6. Moreover, Darwin Nunez's total G/A (goals + assists) is 17 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 1.02 per 90 minutes. His Non-Penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.44. This puts Darwin Nunez's npxG output at 7.23 which puts him in the top 97 percentile of Premier League players.’

Still struggling to understand?

He’s not perfect but he’s obviously better than average by virtue of the fact he’s scored more goals than loads of forwards this season - more than every United striker…are they worse than average, based on your own workings.

No, Højlund is a better striker. It just took him a few months to settle. He's also playing in a much worse side. 10 is an OK total so far, but nothing to write home about.

2 assists
Nunez has 11. Ill take Nunez with much more to his game than your striker
