Can’t pass between the lines for shit, it’s always to the nearest player. We need much better.

He’s been our best defender for most of the season, we’d be a complete mess without him.

Very good game defensively except for the second goal maybe where he looked drawn away too much from the centre , but don’t know what he could have done instead.

Along with Casemiro got completely done by the one two allowing far too much space for the 2nd goal in his position. Lindelof couldnt bail him out with the tackle at the end

Thought he was immense until the second goal. Handled Haaland beautifully.

Said this in the pool game but that kind of defensive performance is where he’s still great. Still think he’ll go in summer but at least he’s having a better run this side of Xmas.

Looking over my shoulder.
The job he did getting back to Foden’s one on one where he missed was brilliant. Varane, instead of sprinting full out, covered Foden’s angle to Haaland and still managed to get close enough to Foden to limit his options for the shot. He’s really good in those two on ones.
Great game.

I guess the wages were just too high, but I'd still keep him for a year or 2, sell Maguire and buy 2 new CBs.

Steady and composed. Found it humorous how he was annoying with all the roaring by Ten Hag on the sideline only to realise the bald fella doing that was Sean Dyche.

We should wrap him and keep him for important games, same as we did with Rio in his last two three years.

Defensively think he's our best defender. Think our best partnerships include him.

Think he's defo needed for the two Liverpool matches

He's a phenomenal defender and still only 30. It's really only his injury record and his wages that should hold us back.

If we can get him on a reasonable wage, I honestly wouldn't mind a 1-year or 2-year deal. We have so many positions we need to fix, so we can't be chucking everything out the door in one go.

Yeah he's pure quality. But his injury record is poor. Id definitely keep him as a sub/25-30 game a season sort , on lower wages

Aerial juggernaut and held down our penalty box in the 1st half for the first 40 mins playing alongside a poor Lindelof up until that point.

Surprised he came off and was worried but fair play to ETH for the subs.

Needs his contract extending but i think his playing time will need to be managed soon. He's leaning heavily on his experience to read the opponent but his legs are getting slow, he cant react very well anymore. You can see his feet are heavy.

If only we'd got him all those years ago when SAF was first interested.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.
I’m pretty amazed how much praise he’s getting. Yes, he’s an incredible box defender but we can’t progress the ball with him at LCB. He is completely unable to pass the ball forward to a teammate on his left foot - and when paired with Lindelof who rarely passes the ball forward regardless of what foot he uses that’s a massive issue. Once Maguire and Eriksen came on we completely dominated the game because we could actually progress the ball from deep.

Agree Varane isn’t the best with his feet, but I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. Varane played against the best pressing team in the world imo, while Maguire -Eriksen faced exhausted Liverpool players with hardly any press at all.

Brutally taken out by Toney in the first half, which was a foul and at least a yellow
But I am struggling to see what he does better than Maguire
He does seem to be a bit more composed than Maguire when it comes to defending and has good postioning. However, there is virtually no difference between the version of Varane that we bought and Chris Smalling, apart from Varane being able to use (just about) his left foot.

Whenever he plays our build up from the back suffers. He is officially in the flop category in terms of transfers for us. When you've won the things he's won and played at the level he has played, i should not be thinking that it might have been wiser to just keep Chris Smalling than to buy Varane.

Just a bigger reputation having been at Madrid

He is still pretty good at taking up a position and repelling crosses with clearances and headers, but the comparison is with Maguire and thats his strong point and better than Varane at it. So yeah

Just incredibly untrue. Varane isn’t in his pomp anymore but is still an elite box defender b
