Joe Cole on crack. Watches that half from Gallagher and Chilwell, and Maguire's bad touch to set up a chance and says England look more comfortable on the ball than Brazil
You're highlighting two players who are not having their best games.

England has made 5 unforced errors in possession, Brazil have made 14.
Brazil have made 3 forced turnovers, England have 10.

Havertz should've made it 2-0. Awful defending from France.

No idea how we could have so many great CBs and end up with Pavard starting against Germany.

Maguire seems to directly cost England chances every game and still we hear he’s “never let England down”

Shaw, as for us, is so important to how this team operates. Missing him badly. ‘Chilly’ isn’t in the same league and I think even the biggest skeptics can acknowledge this now.

Needs to be replaced by Branthwaite or Konsa who are both far more proactive in defending than him.

I don't understand this thread - is this just an opportunity to slag off rivals players?

Gallagher is not a terrible footballer, contrary to what this thread is stating.

England don't look "woeful" either. They're doing what they've previously been unable to do vs good teams; retain possession without giving it away constantly stupidly and also being able to press and regain possession well too.

There's a lot of positives here to be seen.
Gallagher isnt shit. But his lack of turning mobility, technique and touch mean he can cause problems in the buildup in a frustrating way. Sometimes in the first half that would be the case but his good work ethic and aggression meant he won the ball back again and then won a foul. Still not as good as having a good touch and moving the ball comfortably but better than losing the ball and that being the end of it.

He had goals out on loan at Palace but sadly hasnt repeated that since. He has 5 assists this season but mostly through hard work and determination rather than being all that creative.

I get it’s a friendly but he should have been sent off twice over already
Technically superb so can see why Pep wanted him but he is a bit dirty. Not just in this game where he's lucky not to be off but in the PL too.
Yep yep. Some players are just able to get away with it and he’s definitely one. It’s a skill in itself honestly

Gallagher loses possession far too often. It’s not even with defence-splitting passes, he’s just slack with it

Brazil have slickly passed the ball around at 5 times the speed of England's trudging buildup play. Brazil's issue has been defending without fouling in midfield when Bellingham has popped up there. He's strong on the ball and they havent been very subtle just taking him out. Brazil have also been playing the ball behind the defence which is going to give the ball away a fair bit, but if you get it right it can easily get a goal. They should have had at least one from that when Vinicius didnt shoot hard enough after Walker played him onside

Maguire has been awful at set pieces since moving to United. He was winning everything back in 2018.

I'm not watching but not surprised to see the comments on Gallagher. He's not a bad player just limited and I don't think he should be getting meaningful minutes for England. He probably deserves a chance given options but I'd rather other players are ahead of him come the Euros.

Maguire has been really shite tonight. Mistake nearly leading to a goal, gave it away a bunch of times and messing up attacking set pieces.

we’ll have an interview with him soon saying how he’s doing everything right because southgate keeps picking him.

Ages go.

I watched David Hopkin and Paul Furlong for Chelsea. If someone like Gallagher would make you stop watching then you are a very spoiled fan!
You’re going way back there…early premier league days when Chelsea were a mid tabe team with mid table players.

With higher expectations, given their recent history, I’d want more than Connor Gallagher

He's better than Gordon, though.
Gordon and Bowen are strictly LW and RW players. Both aren't as good on the opposite sides unlike Foden who can play both to a good level. I think Gordon has been one of the brightest players tonight for England though?

The lack of yellow cards for friendlies does make them a bit of a mockery. Teams, like Brazil tonight, can just foul with virtual impunity because the ref doesn't want to "ruin the contest".

That will make a huge difference when it happens.

The other major opportunity for change is when Mainoo takes over from Gallagher.

it’s the problem when a footballing minnow like brazil goes up against a huge team like england. they have to try and level the playing field with underhanded tactics. fifa make us have southgate to keep it a fair contest.

Foden is also far better on the right though. It’s one reason he has struggled for England - Southgate sometimes tries to fit him in on the left.
