Yes we're all aware he's young bla bla but he needs a good bollocking imo. Yes he's an exceptional talent but (and it's a big but) he doesn't impact games. Feck how old he is with the tools he already has we need to see more. Time to go up a level. He's given the fans a glimpse of what he's capable of. He's set the bar high himself and he needs to deliver.
Nice WUM.

He gives me the impression he plays as if all the hype has gone to his head. Could be wrong of course. For me he needs to show far more urgency and comittment in his play. Feck his age he's already good enough. Just needs to put a sweat on and put his stamp on games. Bollocking is maybe too strong . A rocket up his arse then!
Can someone with a better memory than me please remember this as an entry for one for worst post of the year when it comes around.

Hope, We Lose
For me the Mainoo we have right now is a ball winner who will go past players if they try to press him and keep the ball moving. He isn't the creative midfielder. He is so calm and composed when he takes the ball those creative passes that really hurt the opposition arent even on his mind. He doesnt play the long passes to set our moves going and our attackers on counter attacks. So I think for now he's best used in a 2 DM system like the one we use where he has a partner who is also a ball winning DM but one who wants to spring us forward quickly and is always looking for that dangerous pass to connect with our attacking players.

The only player we have like that is Casemiro. But that is also what I'd look for in the transfer market. I do think Onana has this, he wants to get on the ball, asks for it, tells teammates where to pass it and he tries to make a difference and progress with his passing. Luiz at Villa is another one. I dont think Joao Gomes from Wolves who we have recently been linked with is it. Doesnt do enough with the ball

Absolutely, he's clearly a DM for me long term, and probably the deepest lying one. He's excellent at keeping possession under pressure and can recycle the ball better than any of our defenders. For that to work, I agree we'd need another defensive midfielder, and ideally one with a bit more bite in the tackle and who can swap positions with Mainoo. A younger Cas would have been ideal. I'm not sure about the long range passing yet, that can come later in a players development but we also shouldn't wait a few years to find out.

It's far rarer to get a DM with his attributes than someone who plays further forward and he'll be an absolute star when he matures in the role.

Just come off the back of a great performance vs Liverpool and then playing well for England. Give him a break, he is 18 and will have up and down patches in form. Even yesterday he wasn't terrible but the players around him were truly awful.

He's probably looking forward to the next international break so he can play with decent midfielders.
So he can play in an actual midfield would be equally true. Mainoo---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Whoever-Bruno

Please cover that space Kobbie, somehow, yes it doesn't make sense but don't you know I was an Ajax TM manager and we must pretend that makes me the font of footballing wisdom, the heir to Cruyff.

If the stats are correct, 21 completed passes today, 6 in the second half.

The non Bruno/Cas midfielder is an absurd role. And a total waste of the ball playing talent of a guy like Mainoo. He doesn't have the running power yet to cover the space Ten Hag wants, stupid set up.

Needs rest. Also needs a manager that players proper football. If it's not going to happen here, he should be on the lookout.

Not his best game from his young career, was surprised he wasn’t taken off for Scott as he looked exhausted, if anyone deserves the benefit it’s him.

Worst game for me. Too many loose passes leading to dangerous opportunities, lost duels, and looked incredibly leggy tracking back.

He's obviously got bags of talent but his lack of pace, acceleration and stamina is a real problem. I hope it's something he's able to work on.

Just play him in a standard midfield 2 and stop killing all our midfielders physically with this inane set up.

Well, too bad we don't play with a number 8.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
unfortunately casemiro is no longer this top class no.6. Mainoo looked sometimes lost alone over there. Agree, he needs a better player alongside him
I agree, he had to hold the midfield on his own given that Cas looks like he is 42 these days and we shouldn't forget that the kid is only 18, so he won't be playing every game at his very best, that is pretty normal at this age.

We play a 6, a 10 and a something, and the something no matter if it is McTominany, Mainoo, Mount from the start of the season invariably barely touch the ball and spends all their energy trying to press and pick up second balls.

Eriksen and Cas for a spell last season, then a small period when he played Cas and Fred together as a genuine pair, it worked, but he can't stop himself from going back to this set up.

Poor game. Looked out of his depth. Bit concerned about his lack of physicality as he can't seem to cover ground or move at speed.
He's 18 and basically playing cm on his own. No surprise he got motm for england when playing next to a good player.

Thought he was decent at worst and had a better game than Casemiro and McTominay, won the ball a bunch and had a couple of times when players tried to foul or tackle him and he was strong and stayed on his feet and came away with the ball. Referee gave everything Chelsea's way so had a few moments where he was fouled go against him.

Or maybe he should play better and not fully ready as starter yet?

He does look shattered, was running in treacle at times. Casemiro being so immobile doesn’t help.

Unless we get a manager that values possession his talent will be wasted.

The set up of a nonexistent midfield is killing him. Give credit to ETH to bringing him through but he needs a better coach to get the best out of him

Plus he looks tired

Worst performance for us so far. Don't blame him though. Midfield is totally non existent, poor guy was playing basketball out there. That's how up and down it was.

Whilst I agree, he tried some extremely silly passes at 3-2 in the last minutes that turned over possession far too easily. He'll learn, but he needs some serious help in there with recruitment this summer.
