Finished it yesterday, I really liked it, nothing groundbreaking, but a really fun watch.

I didn't like Maximus, and can't put my finger on why. Can't tell if it's the character or the actor, just something hard to warm to about him.

He's a coward, always hard to like coward characters.

Just like I did with Halo, Kwans B side plot was irritating and mostly pointless as well as her acting was just terrible now the same thing happens here with Maximus, it's like every scene he chews it up and scrunches a face where he looks like he's trying to say something but fails to do anything meaningful other than look like a complete dumbass with bees in his mouth.

I literally was like "oh well" on episode 8 where
you thought he was dead but no he's bumbled his way into being a hero

I don't think he's even a coward, you can see what the writers are trying to attempt with a Finn (star wars - ive said this before) kinda character but it just falls flat as he's extremely unlikeable, I was half expecting him to shout "LUCCYYYYYY" every 5 minutes or so to stay relevant

It's definitely his character, it's the way he was raised within the brotherhood, that's why he's so robot like/unemotional. Makes perfect sense for him to be that way.

And not very bright when it comes to the real world, which makes sense again because he's barely been out there, he's only just become a squire so had many years of training ahead of him before the shit hit the fan so soon in the first episode.

I probably wouldn't have noticed characters crossing paths if it weren't for this thread. They do it in every show anyway, it's literally how the story is told, otherwise there isn't a story?

The worst was in ep 2 where maximus was just there at perfect timing though, that's the worst so far.

But yeah, the maximus story is feckin garbage.
It’s not that they cross paths. It’s that basically every main character introduced so far just seemed to turn up like Avengers assembling. Didn’t feel organic at all.

The Brotherhood soldier gets bored and lands precisely where Doc & Dog just were? They literally could’ve changed that to just be that they’d tracked the target there and it would instantly feel more natural. Then they’re all in the same town at the exact same time, plus then throwing in Maximus somehow turning up there too? Felt weird, that’s all.

By all means have them cross paths over a season as many other shows do, but two episodes in and they’re all flying about together.

I’m surprised that Maximus “being stupid” is used as a way to criticize the writing. That’s exactly what he is and how he’s written — as a dumb guy who got way over his head.

I’ve never understood path crossing criticism. Isn’t that just a perfectly normal way to structure a story? We’re introduced to characters early on because their paths will subsequently cross, creating the drama that is the basis of the story.

Or is it a massive coincidence that Goldilocks ends up in the home of the specific three bears we were reading about beforehand?

Of course, like I said I’ve no issue with their paths crossing. More the way it was done.

They all seemed to be from quite different areas of the wasteland but within two episodes of travelling they’re all together. I just found it quite jarring. We all know that they’ll cross paths at some point but to all end up in that same town at that same moment felt a bit rushed and unnatural for me. Other shows take a bit more time with it and the audience can understand how these people have organically come together rather than just artificially “and then this guy flies in from nowhere”.

Anyway, minor quibble regardless. Just felt heavy handed.

Also, who ever didn't have the head was tracking who ever did have the head. It would have been kinda strange if they tracked them and ended up somewhere else.

Fair enough. Full disclosure, I haven't watched it yet!

Finished bingewatching it last night. They did a really good job of recreating the atmosphere of the games. Unlike the Witcher, for example, it actually felt familiar to the game's universe. When they enter that town in episode 2 (or 3), it brought back memories of being in Megaton. At first, I was hoping they would do a similar Megaton plot where a shady bloke makes you an offer to nuke the city, but I suppose Lucy is too morally stubborn to even consider such a proposition!

In terms of the characters, they were as hit-and-miss as I expected. Maximus is overly wooden. I get that he was meant to have similar vibes to a Jon Snow-type of knight, but Jesus Christ, it wouldn't have hurt to make him a bit more interesting. The goul was by far the best character. Walton Goggins deserves all the praise he gets for that performance.

Maximus as a wooden Jon Snow? He was more like a toned down but goofy, slightly tragic comic relief to me.

Agree with the Witcher comparison. This felt extremely Fallout-y. Definite Megaton vibes too.

Finished it. It was very good. Goggins was quality as always but Lucy was great, she's really likeable. I liked Maximus too, idiot with a heart and that "Wanna make my cock explode now?" line made me laugh.

I have a big urge to get stuck into some of the games again now.

Eagerly waiting for @Solius to give us his verdict.

Probably thinks it's shit because the guns always "conveniently" fire, instead of having an entire episode showing the backstory of the bullet being made. :wenger:

The 10mm did seem a bit overpowered, no way it kills a Yao guai in one shot. Not even on easy mode!

Wait till the 25th, they are releasing updates for it and improved bug fixes, I tried to play it on Xbox Game pass but the game kept crashing at various points, Fallout 3 is fine and actually pretty decent to start off with
Oh thanks. Be interesting to revisit it as I remember enjoying it, though I still preferred F3 .

So far it's as good as Fallout 4's story but I like Fallout and this is not bad, the sets look like the game, well made. Walton Goggins is great. And of course it's
love at first sight with Lucy and Maximus
Predictable as it gets.

Finished this and really enjoyed it despite not knowing anything about the games going in.

It was really fun and got me interested in the world so I watched some cutscenes from the games and talked with a friend who played all games since fallout 1 in the 90s. If I still played games I'd definitely be interested in playing these after watching

The world of fallout is an acquired taste really. Some people just can't get in to the alternative retro futuristic style.
The retro future aesthetic is awesome and one of the best parts for me

Going to finally watch all of this on my day off this week. On another note I still haven't played FO4 or 77 yet.
Fallout 4 is good fun, all the updates and dlc over the years have helped it alot. It's getting a next gen update on the 25th aswell.

76 is a bit of an acquired taste, it always being online puts people off but it's map is amazing and it's alot of fun too with some great missions.

Just finished this.

After a very chaotic start it got way better as the series went on, feels like it only actually started telling a good story from episode 6 onwards. Episode 8 was brilliant.

Will definitely have to rewatch and pay more attention and thought it was just a bit of daft fun at first and didn't think the story would really go anywhere.

Looking forward to.season 2.

Yeah, this show is fantastic. Never played the game, but basically have taken in a lot of the story in over the years from game fans and random youtube watching.

I have no issues with it, and IMO makes a mockery of other recent adaptations like 3-Body Problem.

Sign me up for season 2, sign me up for more Goggins

Considering that world is soo dense, I think the writers have done a terrific job.

What is going on in TV adaptations land when video games like this and The Last of Us are getting better adaptations than historically significant IP's?

Having a showrunner that loves the source material and has the skill to execute it, plus a network that backs their vision is a rare thing, which makes shows like this, TLOU, and Shogun (my favorite show in years) so rare and wonderful.
