Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

I guarantee that you could replace Onana with another keeper and it would make not a fecking jot of difference. When a team concedes shots at the rate we do, it's absolutely inevitable that there will be some that he lets in that he probably shouldn't.

It's just, how many times have we seen a goal this season where you think that the goalkeeper isn't specifically to blame but you'd want him to save that kind of shot.

How many goals have we conceded like that + the shit goals we've conceded that were definitely him to blame vs whoa Onana really saved our skin with that goalkeeping.
I won't disagree with you too much on that, I wouldn't have him as a top shot stopper.
I'm not sure even a top one does much for this team, it's a mess.

Said it all last summer, wasting 60 million to replace de gea could have been spent in other areas. A forward who is ready to go for instance.

I'm not pretending de gea didn't have issues, but he would have been no worse than this.

Onana for the first one, watch his right foot, just stays on the ground, no push off, no spring, that's a saveable shot.

I'm really curious to hear which keeper you think would be getting the side conceding more shots per game than every side in the league bar the record-breakingly shite defence of Sheffield United into a much higher position than we are...

We've been spoilt by having de gea when he was at his peak, pull off ridiculous saves.

Onana doesnt have that in his locker. Number 1 criteria for a Utd No1 keeper should be world class shot stopping ability. All the crap about being able to play out from the back is secondary.

How much nonsense was posted when we signed him that he would be a transformative keeper and allow us to play a high line etc. Transformative he has been, by being useless at shot stopping.

A top keeper obviously wouldn't do much for this team. We're conceding more shots than any team in the league bar a side that has literally broken the record for goals conceded in Premier League history.

Anyone who thinks there is a keeper out there who would have us getting considerably better results knows feck all about the sport they're watching. I'm sorry, it really is that simple.

Why is it that lower placed keepers, who always face more shots, usually have a good save percentage and their stats very strong and they get bought by teams higher up the leagues?

Because while they face volume, their ability as shit stoppers means they can make more saves, not less.

Now variance happens depending on how clinical the opposition are but in general, teams will have pot shots and saveable shots, they won't all be worldies.

So just because he has a high volume of shots, doesn't mean he naturally has to ship the most goals.

But besides from the stats, the eye test. The guy cannot make routine saves.

You have zero clue about statistics. It's really that simple.

Yeah I’m out. Not a safe pair of hands by any means. Any shot on target has a good chance of going in against him.

It wouldn't have made a bug difference in the league at this point but overall, looking at the season, it's had a big effect because going out of the CL like we did was in a big way on him. Psychologically it has no doubt had a big effect in a negative way on our squad.

Onana's stats are strong, so I have no idea why you're bringing that up like it's a point against him.

Lower league keepers also don't face nearly the same level of scrutiny that Onana has, which is entirely fair since they cost far less and are playing for lower league sides, but if they did I guarantee you that plenty of people would be saying they're "shite" (unfairly) as well.

The difference between Onana and a top keeper is they save two of those goals, maybe three and keep us in the game.

Why does he just not move his feet? Why doesn’t he save much? Why does no one fecking move into space for him to pass to them?

This has not worked.

Doesn’t help him that we’ve had proper keepers like schmeichal, VDS and DDG. He is nowhere near their level and more like the ones we had in between thst needed changing. Simply not good enough.

If you ever go in goal as an outfield player I'm sure it instantly hits you that the goal looks a lot bigger now you have to cover it. And it is daunting and frankly exhausting trying to move from one post to another as a cross is launched in all the while tracking the flight of the ball. That's why it takes a lot more than being able to save shots to be a great goalkeeper. Onana has become quite good at saving shots when he can step forward and close the angle down (this is usually when a ball is played in behind for a forward to run onto). He is still very poor at saving shots where he has to move across the goal line.

The bottom line to all of this, regardless of whether Onana is shite or not, is that he certainly hasn't improved the team one bit or quelled the fan infighting about the goalkeeper position. At absolute best he was a £45m sidegrade from De Gea, who could have been kept on for free on reduced terms. As a piece of transfer business it has to go down as an utter failure. There's no other logical way to look at it.

Agreed. He doesn't have the ability to make saves he shouldnt be able to get to i.e. like the very best keepers do. Somehow they keep the ball out by pulling off a worldoe save.

Why isn't he subbed or benched then? Why was he allowed to continue to play? We all know he's terrible and the one person who can do something about that didn't do diddly squat.

Terrible keeper. We could have got Costa from Porto for the same price.
Meh, everyone absolutely despised him after his disasterclass against Ghana in the WC. I don't think he was the answer either.

There is no doubt that Onana is not our level and, say, Ramsdale is head and shoulders better, but pinning all goals today on Onana is also completely unfair.

fecking Casemiro was an absolute disaster, causing goal-scoring situations for pretty much every goal and the rest of the team were zombies, so it's not like everybody else played even decently and Onana was shit. If anything he was above-average shit in a team that were stinking bottom of the barrel shit. Just saying

I refuse to believe there aren't at least 100 professional goalkeepers across Europe and South America who would be a significant upgrade on him and who are valued at a max of 10m. The criteria is just "able to move his feet" at this point.

Of all the deficient elements of Manchester United over the last decade, scouting has to be very near the top of the list.
