Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has reportedly negotiated a break clause in his new five-year contract with the club.

According to the Telegraph, Rooney can leave Man Utd for 30 million pounds if certain targets are not met on a year-by-year basis.

A source close to the negotiating team said that Rooney's representatives took legal advice on how to build a clause that would allow the player to leave Old Trafford if the American owners, the Glazer family, were to renege on their promise to invest in the team.

Manchester United's owners have reportedly pledged to give 100 million pounds to manager Sir Alex Ferguson to buy new players.

The guarantee by the Glazer family had helped Ferguson to persuade striker Rooney to stay back at the club.

The insertion of a break clause gives the player the freedom to move if his valuation is met, but it also protects the club against players who try to force cut-price deals.

In a dramatic change of events, Rooney - who wanted to leave United earlier this week - ended doubts over his future by signing a new five-year contract.

He is now the highest-paid player at United, overtaking defender Rio Ferdinand.

The striker, who was previously on 90,000 pounds per week, is now understood to be earning a basic salary in excess of 150,000 pounds per week.
So looks like we are finally going to be spending. Theres a few names flying about and a few of ours who could be on the way out. Sneijder has refused to sign a new contract at Milan, Kaka and Benzema not kicking it at Madrid and Ribery and Henderson also targets. Who do you think are going to be coming in, in Jan/the summer.

Try to be realistic.

Please try and avoid discussion based on the clause in Rooneys contract or the figures quoted to be available. We are pretty sure that this contract has next to to influence on future signings and that £100m will never be spent, even if it is "available". However it is looking like we will be signing some names sooner rather than later, so lets discuss that here.

Bale, Defour, Sanchez and Stekelenburg would be my guesses if Fergie did have to spend. But if you think he has been railroaded into action by Rooney you are sadly mistaken. Id wondered what promises if any Rooney was given when he signed im not sure if any names were mentioned if he was!

How do they judge what's appropriate investment in the team? Do we need to spend a certain amount of money on players, or sign a certain amount of players? Or did the journo make it up?

Well we'll need to bring in a goalkeeper. PIG is an able deputy but nothing more.

Defence I think we're fine.

Midfield is obviously the big one. If the likes of Anderson, Hargreaves and Carrick can't find their form (And in the case of Hargreaves keep fit) then I reckon Fergie will say enough is enough and ship them out. Out wide we could maybe do with one more player just to add a bit of competition, as I think Giggs may call it a day as he's had quite a few injuries this year. If those continue he may decide enough is enough.

Up front we're fine. Two £30m strikers. Hernandez who looks a steal at £7m then Machedea/Diouf/Welbeck/Whoever.

But yeah we're in a massive decline and we need to spend £200m.

Are you assuming Owen is going to move on or did you just forget him?

Rodwell is probably the player we have been linked with that I want the most at our club. The boy has got massive potential.

I don't see him getting much game time to be honest. Hernandez is basically him, just younger and much superior.
I don't disagree, at his stage of the career he could really do with game time that I don't see we can consistently offer him while developing our younger players.

Sadly I could also see one of the kids going as well as we've got yet more promising talent behind them.

Modric, Rodwell I guess. Personally I would like one of the Germany goalies as well and maybe even Marin as we missed out on Ozil. They seem somewhat realistic I think -_-

The likes of Kaka, Sniejder, and even Benzema because he's already on 180k just seem totally unrealistic to me. Fergie isn't going to break his policy just become he may have more money available, and Sneijder would cost a bomb.

So Rooney basically approached Gill or whoever he negotiated with, and told him "spend £100m on players or I'm gone"? We could basically purchase Defour for £100m and tell Standard to give us £89m back.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of clause in Rooney's contract but it wont be overly strict as Fergie wouldn't have agreed to it.

I also wouldn't get any hopes up for January unless Fergie wants another winger.

The qualms I have with the validity og this is that it would have been cheaper to tell Rooney to go, replacing Rooney with a ready made striker you may spend in the £20-40 million vicinity and you would use the funds generated by his sale to do it. Whilst this deal if true commits Man United to spending £100 million without his sale to support it, that doesn't really strike me as the Glazers.

Or alternatively, this may have been something that Ferguson was going to do anyway, and waiting until he has to which next summer it is clear that he will.

I'm almost certain there won't be a clause based on money spent, that would be ludicrous. I think it's much more likely there would be a break clause around Champions League qualification or something.

You think, that's any less ludicrous? Just when we need him the most, our star player/highest earner gets to jump ship, whilst we can't even qualify for the CL?

Some of you are massive spastics if you believe Alex Ferguson and the club would agree to a clause that said that the club have to spend a certain amount.

Ferguson will spend on the team as he sees fit. He isn't going to buy players for the heck of it just because Rooney may have thrown his toys out of the pram.

That makes little sense to me. Can anyone explain it.

I agree, I think he was probably thinking of getting a half decent midfielder in though, regardless.

This notion that we need a massive squad overhaul with fergie embarking on a summer clear out rebuilding process is so over hyped sometimes especially on here, ignore taunts from outside the club and the crowing of certain sets of supporters who think we're finished etc etc you look at this squad and its very strong and deep, it most certainly does not require hundreds of millions of transfers to make it competitive again, we clearly do need one or 2 additions in midfield and a new keeeper when VDS calls it a day, that's it, at most that will cost about 70 million id say, dependent of course on who we target.

The squad as it stands:

................................................Amos
..............................................Kuuszazck
.............................................Van Der Sar

G.Neville.........................................................................Fabio
Brown ..........................Smalling................Evans..............O'Shea
Rafael..........................Ferdinand...............Vidic.................Evra

.................................Hargreaves.............Gibson
...................................Carrick................Anderson
..................................Fletcher................Scholes

Bebe..............................................................................Obertan
Valencia............................................................................Park
Nani ................................................................................Giggs
.................................................Macheda
...................................................Owen
................................................Hernandez
.................................................Berbatov
..................................................Rooney

Looking at that defensively were fine, more than fine actually, very strong with plenty of depth and versatility, up front again we're strong, plenty of depth and lots of quality, out wide we're strong, Valencia and Nani are a great first choice combination with Giggs still offering high class service, maybe an extra natural left winger would be ideal but its hardly a pressing concern.

The only area in there that you could argue needs ripping up and reinvestment is central midfield and plenty of us have been saying that for some time anyway, i personally expect that will happen over the course of the next 2 transfer windows. There all good players thats the first thing to acknowledge but are they good enough? Carrick i fancy will be shown the door either in January or next summer im almost certain of that his forms simply not been up to standard for far far to long now and he lost his automatic selection in there a long time ago now, Scholes is still our best player in there at the age of 36, thats not good enough really and this in all possibility could be his last season so that alone needs replacing, Andersons still a work in progress plenty of ability and definitely needs preserving, Gibson i thinks on burrowed time as hes simply not good enough and well bless him Hargreaves is as good as dead as a footballer.

If I had to choose between sleeping with Miss Worl
January
--------

Anders Lindegaard - £3m +/-from Aalesund FK. Strongly linked, will probably leave Aalesund this January and will be cheap. Great in Norway, I have no idea how he will do in England.

I hope we get a winger, but those are really expensive in January. Ibrahim Affelay is rumored to leave PSV, therefor he might be a decent option to acquire in January, at least we should get another winger and preferably someone left footed. Douglas Costa might be a option, left footed, dont have a clue how good he really is, but it is said that he is a free-kick specialist, we could need that too.

Jordan Henderson has been linked from Sunderland, if that were to happen, I bet Welbeck would go permanently to Sunderland, and MB Diouf might end up doing the same to Blackburn, if that happen, we could need another forward like Benzema, and his days in Real Madrid might be numbered. If Real Madrid decides to dump Benzema we need to consider making a move. There are rumours that Diego Milito has fallen out with Rafa Benitez and might change venues, he is probably more of a Mourinho type forward. Such a signing might be depending on them leaving though.

--------
Summer dream dream scenario

Anderson, Carrick and Hargo are not what they used to be, would love to see someone next to Fletcher whom could play in a bit of a defensive role. Jack Rodwell would be a excellent option. If Jordan Henderson signs that might ease such needs though, but he might be a bit more attacking option.

Javier Pastore - Argentinean mastermind is the best young playmakers around, still adaptable to the English league as he is only 21 (22 in the summer).

Left winger, the two best options is probably Gareth Bale (Good option alongside Valencia, as both of them is decent defensively as well as attack), the best available man is likely to be Juan Mata at Valencia. Both of these would be really expensive though.

................................................Amos Untested, but will hopefully at least be a good backup
..............................................Kuuszazck If he's content with being a backup then we're fine
.............................................Van Der Sar Retiring soon, we need a replacement

G.Neville Retiring soon, cover will be needed.........................................................................Fabio
Brown ..........................Smalling................Evans..............O'Shea
Rafael..........................Ferdinand Injury history of late will hurt us in the long term and affect how long he lasts...............Vidic.................Evra

.................................Hargreaves Hasn't played a game in almost 2 years now....harldy counts.............Gibson Not as effective as I'd like to see after 2 years in the first team now
...................................Carrick................Anderson
..................................Fletcher................Scholes Retiring soon and will need a suitable replacement, especially if Gibson isn't up to it

Bebe I have faith in Sir Alex, but let's be honest, we have no idea how this guy is going to turn out..............................................................................Obertan
Valencia Bad injury, could effect him in the long term given that he is a winger who relies on pace more than anything, I hope for the best though............................................................................Park
Nani ................................................................................Giggs Retiring soon...
.................................................Macheda
...................................................Owen Sick note and not nearly what he used to be, similar to Valencia in that he relied on his pace more than anything.
................................................Hernandez
.................................................Berbatov
..................................................Rooney Potential attitude problems....I think Sir Alex will flog him in the summer after this paste week
See Bold

In summary I think we need a GK, Center back, Center Mid, and either a winger or striker. Essentially to replace those who will be retiring.

Whats with everyone linking us with Henderson? What is so special about that lad? Is he good enough to play for United?

What is it with you and Javier Pastore? I know he is very talented and all but I think you kinda overrate him here. I mean a year ago, no one had any idea about this lad and as soon he gets selected to represent Argentina at the WC, everyone goes off.

Very talented young player coming through but i don't think he's the sort of guy who's going to stroll into our midfield and immediately make it infinitely better, in fact id say he's another one for the future much like Rodwell.

But Rodwell has proven himself in the Premier League and showed us what he is capable of and hence he is definitely worthy of pulling on a United shirt. Rodwell is a year younger and has done more and Rodwell is more versatile.

This has to be amongst the most bullshit things I have ever read.

As far as I'm concerned, all the Glazers did was give Rooney assurances that money WAS available for squad investment i.e. £100million.

To suggest that a specific amount HAS to be spent or Rooney can basically leave for a song is just fecking La La Land.

Who comes in and who goes out is the job for one man - Fergie. If he identifies a target and he can get him for £10m, why the feck would he go for someone else who costs £30m if he didn't think that was the right player? Just to meet the clause in another player's contract? How counter-productive would that be?

Sorry but this is a journalist with an over-active imagination (they seem more plentiful than ever before these days) who has had some kind of spaz attack. That it comes from the Telegraph is quite depressing really. I could get my head around The Sun publishing this kind of shit.
