Ole will use his ankle & the need to keep him fresh as his reasons. I am not a fan of some of Ole’s lineups & in game substitutions.

We’re in a last half of the season sprint, it’s time to stop with the coddling of him.
Would think that the reason he was being rested after half time was - he is playing next game. Either way it doesn't matter much if Martial has gotten his scoring boots on again. Cavani offers a lot in the build up but he misses some sitters as well.

Would much rather see a Cavani-led line against Everton. Sometimes, having the three youngsters up top is a bit too much of the same thing.

I would hope Cavani coming off at halftime was in order to get him as fresh as possible for Saturday, but I don’t have all my hope up for it.

Remember when everyone was calling Ed an idiot for signing him?

To be honest, I didn’t rate him hugely even when he was with Napoli and I thought it was a bit of a panic signing but glad to be wrong. Seeing him regularly up close, he’s a lovely player.
Of course, we need Haaland to take over, but he’s great to have in the meantime.

He has been quality. Kudos to Ole signing him up. How the feck was he out of contract?

A real 9, is not to understate his influence. Yes , he doesn’t score every opportunity, but look at this movement for his headed goal today. A quick look to see where his opponents were positioned, then a move into space to score, even allowing for his age it underlines what our other strikers don’t do.

Well, I for one never doubted him...

Cavani: ...honestly I can't remember a signing that has looked like more of an inevitable disaster than this one. Really, really hope he proves me wrong (and I'll be delighted to admit I was wrong here) but there's just so many things against this being a success: his recent injury record, lack of match-time this year (even accounting for the pandemic), the fact he's spent so long playing for the one horse in the one horse league that is the French league, etc. Really hope I'm wrong but...
Now I'm seriously tempted to get my first player shirt in like a decade

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
When comparing him to Vardy it should be remembered that Vardy started his professional career quite late. Cavani has played almost 200 games more over the course of their careers.

I do expect him to play quite regularly for the rest of the season, but we will try to rest him a bit more than some people will like.

Hey - where do you get this data? I've been itching to get my hands on some footy data but most of this seems to be paywalled and subscriptions to things like Opta aren't meant for individual data analysts.

https://fbref.com/en/ seems to be the best free stat site, and it looks like that's where he got those stats from.
Thanks, this lead me down a bit of a rabbit hole and I ended up finding this vid which I'm really enjoying so far.

EDIT: Okay it dropped off a bit after 10-15 minutes and ended up being a whole lot of nothing, pats on back etc. They seem to know what they're talking about though and I'm subbed to their podcast now, will give it a listen.

I didn't snigger or mock the signing. Wanted him to have Zlatan like effect.
But I wasn't expecting him to come good. I thought Falcao all over again.

Edit: At least I didn't go full Athletic on him

I don't understand this view that Ole hasn't been starting him enough.

When we signed him, he hadn't played a competitive game for PSG since March, that's SEVEN months without competitive football. Only a PE teacher would throw him straight into every game from the start. I thought he introduced him well.

Then, as he was growing more and more important, and scoring goals, he got suspended for his instagram comment.

One thing you’ll notice is that in every clip of a defender clearing a cross, pass, header Cavani is always waiting right behind them ready for any mistakes or that perfect unreachable ball. Just phenomenal movement, which reminds me of why Ronaldo scores so many goals.

Still can't wrap my head around him.

Hes literally one of those players that every time I watched him he was shite.

I mean as a forward myself I could appreciate his movement so I knew that was good, but he never seem to score in any of the champions league games I watched him play for psg.
Which is strange as his CL record is pretty damn good. He’s scored against all the English teams so it’s not even about him scoring against obscure CL teams that no one watches

As Utd fans, I feel like we should feel more comfortable towards the ageing striker trope than most teams.

We brought in Teddy Sheringham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani and even had Henrik Larsson on loan when he was winding down his career in his native Sweden

Teddy Sheringham was PFA Player of the Year at 35. Zlatan was our top scorer in his first season with us at 35. Larsson at 35 and partially retired looked like he could hang with our players during his cameo period in 06/07, and Cavani seems integral to our attack at 34.

I still feel it was a panic signing, but thankfully a lot of us do have egg on our faces now.
I’m not having it as a panic signing at all. We had no out and out no. 9 in the squad & we are clearly interested in Haaland when the time comes.
Had Cavani been interested in moving to United at the wages we got him on earlier in the window, we’d have bitten his agents hand off.

This was an opportunity that presented itself, the Suarez to Italy feck up scuppered his Athletico chances and then so late into the window his demands had to drop.

Was a no brainer at that point.

He's great. Even when he's not scoring, he just never stops.

He's not the fastest, but he looks incredibly fit, his running is constant. Must be a nightmare to play against.
Yes and his running pulls defenders with him creating space for
other attackers.

Cavani is all of 33. Not 43 or 53.
Anyone can see that he has looked after himself and carries no weight.
I don't know about his injuries but he is a very good addition to the squad.

Yep the guy is driven. Others in the squad should take note.
It's so easy to think in our eyes that as you make it as a pro you become driven till your body can't take it anymore.

But it's just not the case. Players that play to the top top level at a latter age in their career have that drive that so few possess. He seems to have that and that might rub off on someone like Rashford or Mason...comparing those two to the attitude of Martial (or from what we see on the pitch) where I personally think he's in it to earn as much as he can while Rashford is in it to beat records etc.

Not saying Martial hasn't got the drive to make it as he's at United and a French international, but I don't personally see that drive in him that I do in others.

That sums up Cavani to another 31/32 who are happy to take the easier route

Apparently subbed because of a slight injury received from the VAR penalty tackle. Hopefully he is fit again soon.

he seems to look after himself very well, if he has any type of the Ibra DNA in him he may be here for 2 or 3 more years.
Even if we got 2 more years it would be great.

He is a very good player

Had a couple pretty bad miskicks lately. Was starting to think we'd broken yet another striker.

Absolutely adore his work rate and movement.

Genuinely no disrespect to Martial or Greenwood, but what Cavani is really doing is showing how much we need a proper #9.
Disrespect Martial all you want he is shit. :)
