Gaming Acclaimed games that you couldn't get in to?

metro games, completed the first one but it was the biggest drag i've experienced in a game. Visually they were awesome, the cut scenes were good as well but the game play was just boring to me.

Uncharted.

Bullet sponge AI. Walking around a lot especially 4. 2 was the best in series because it was fast paced.

I'm with the OP. I really didn't like The Witcher 3 at all. As crazy as it may sound, there's just too much shit to do in that game. Constantly getting sidetracked by the innumerable amount of side quests littered across the map just became too much. Also, the combat was fecking terrible.

Also, while i love the worlds that the Assassins Creed games create, the actual gameplay was shite. Terrible controls.

Fortnite can feck off, too.

All assassins creed games can feck aff.

As can cod and mob.

Come on chef.

The thread is critically acclaimed. AC besides the odd game has never been that. It’s always been a yearly think like COD and Fifa that people will buy. But I don’t believe any of them are above 85 or 90 on metacritic.

Something like LA Noire is a good shout. It’s 89 on metacritic and the only reason is the publisher logo because the developers didn’t really do a good job.

I've struggled with a lot of Rockstar games. I guess I really liked the setting of Red Dead Redemption. I just never finished it. And I never really get the mini games in Rockstar games. What do I care if I can play poker, or this horseshoe throwing game with poor controls?

That's what I was like with RDR, the setting looked nice and everything but it was just boring to me. Undead Nightmare was fun though with the zombies and overall horror atmosphere. I just played it for a little bit earlier on after thinking about it earlier, I was soon reminded just how annoying the controls are. Still, the spooky factor makes me like it enough to play it for an hour or so at a time.

I didn't care much for the controls either. Cool to be able to ride your horse and shoot some poor sod at the same time, only problem was you had to use your teeth, a foot or your little brother to control some of it to not fall off a cliff or miss your target. Or that's how I remember it.

The shooting itself is ok, but then trying to control the bloody horse decently going where you want without tiring it out and getting thrown off, or selecting the weapons from that terrible wheel thing... bleh!

Edit: Not to mention the bloody slow turning when aiming your weapon. So yeah, maybe the shooting isn't ok after all.

I thought Breath of the Wild was astonishingly overrated, on an astonishingly overrated console.

The Final Fantasy series... Just didn't get it. Completed VII back in the day on PS1 but for the life of me I don't know why.

Maybe it is because of me being too old these days (38) but I would be far quicker naming the games I actually enjoyed the past years.

Among the most boring games for me are the whole Mass Effect series, Horizon Zero Dawn, Shadow of Mordor or stuff like Alien Isolation.
I also do not really get the hype for Rockstar games. I would call them solid but nothing more.

On the other hand I have been positively surprised by e.g. the new Wolfenstein or Metro games which offered great experiences although I am not the biggest shooter fan.

Undertale. The bullet hell gameplay just got tedious extremely quickly, with all the random frog encounters and turned me off the game.

Elder Scrolls games, including post-apocalyptic Elder Scrolls with guns. After a while I start asking the question 'why am I doing this again?' and can never really come up with an answer.

Could not get into Breath of the Wild though to be fair performance with the emulator was pretty poor (my CPU is simply not beefy enough) so that contributed but I did not enjoy combat or crafting or the shrines. And there is no... hook. I need something to give me motivation.

I have been a massive fan of FIFA and COD but won’t be buying either this year.

Games are now too focused on generating even more money. FIFA just focuses on ultimate team where even a small fortune spent can get you no where. All I want to do is get on a career mode, and get a good team together but they have done nothing to it for years. I don’t really care about seeing the same repeated transfer negotiation. Once you have done one it’s just gets very tedious. At least they have the Champions League rights now I suppose.

The new COD doesn’t even have a story mode so it’s now online based. So after paying £50 for a game you then need to have PlayStation Plus to actually use it? The whole thing is a con. I mean online was free on PS3. What exactly has Sony done to warrant charging everyone all of a sudden?

Last of us definitely. The gameplay is way too boring and I havent got into the storyline much either. Trying to finish the game for four months but I haven't even reached the 25% mark.

Worried about so many people saying witcher 3. Its the next game I plan to start :nervous:

The Last of Us. I never really got into the story and found the game too hard at times.

That’s all good Dowling.

But they not acclaimed games. They just yearly sequels which get complaints every year. No where do I see them getting high praise.

And no idea how you managed to also turn the subject to should we pay for online.

My friend @MaxiPaxi put a lot of effort and time into this thread. Don’t ruin it Dowling.

What settings did you have for it? There’s the full auto aim where you tap LT or whatever and it locks on automatically, which makes the game far too easy. Or the one where you actually aim yourself.

Agree with Read Dead Redemption. Liked the setting but all the missions and side missions felt very repetitive and, eventually, dull.

I'm a miserable, old school elitist, so it's easier for me to state the games I like rather than all the ones I've turned on, played 10mins of and then left in a 'must get round to... one day' pile.

Dowling, I am chilled.

Anyway I am going to answer your point here as to why Sony decided to start charging. They saw last gen how much MS were making from it and realised they fecked up. They then realised they couldn’t just suddenly start charging for it on PS3, so they decided to release PS plus which gave users free games. The PS4 was the perfect time to make the switch and start charging for multiplayer as well. There wasn’t much uproar at that time because Microsoft were basically pissing off the majority of the gaming community with their online only, forced Kinect and no used games. So when Sony announced they charging for multiplayer everyone was more happy they could play used games.

Since then they have 34 million subscribers. That’s a lot of extra income from last gen. Even Nintendo are at it now. But theirs is relative cheap as it costs £20 for a year and you get free games too.

Dark souls. All dog shit to me. I dont understand the hype at all.
Found a hollow.

Way too many people mentioning TW3. Even one saying FF6 and another FF8. :(

@Redlambs is probably sad to see so many people not enjoy BotW.

My list would be huge, but any sandbox made by R* gets a lot of praise, but I'll never find them entertaining.

At the risk of sounding like a tremendous hipster, pretty much all of the acclaimed games of this generation.

God of War
Horizon Zero Dawn
Tomb Raider reboots
Assassin's Creed
MGS V
Fallout 4

Neither The Witcher 3 nor Dark Souls/Bloodborne are my cup of tea but I wouldn't accuse them of being bad games.

Outside of that, I've never found much love for the original God of War games and Mass Effect series. Earthbound is overrated (although Mother 3 is amazing).

Eh? I only see two mentions and one was a poor emulated version. Besides, it had a couple of design choices that would polarise people, so mentions of it are fair.

TW3 does definitely deserve the mentions though, personally I could get into it, but I can easily see why there's a bit of a backlash against all the hype.

For me, I always thought TLOU was overrated by quite some way. It was just so boring and although graphically pretty and a decent enough story, you'd think it was perfect in every area the way it was (and still is) talked about.

That shows how different tastes can be. I like playing stuff like Uncharted etc. but Souls games are the only ones bringing back the feeling of my youth when it comes to gaming.
Staying up until late, thinking about the game during the day and really looking forward to the evening and jumping back into this world again.

Most Nintendo games. Mario I never liked. Zelda and Metroid are the only ones I really found to be enjoyable and they have their ups and downs.

The only Rockstar games I particularly liked were Red Dead Redemption and GTA 5. I'm very much enjoying RDR 2, but it's not as good as the reviews are making out.

CoD I just never really understood the hype for.

Assassins Creed is trapped in its own hype and still feels like a bunch of concepts rather than a finished game.

Horizon Zero Dawn I did not like. I got bored quickly with it.

Metal gear games - or any game for that matter where you have to "sneak about".

Sorry, another vote for Witcher 3.

Destiny

GTA San Andreas for me also. I was hugely excited by it as a big fan of the franchise but didn't like It.
