Luke Shaw plays CB and Telles can play as LB? We need s good pacy left footed defender and maybe Shaw can play the role.
Thinking the exact same thing. He's done pretty well as a CB when three at the back. He's strong, decent in the air, great speed for a CB, especially top speed so plenty of recovery pace for whichever English or Swedish snail is next to him. He's also very comfortable playing out from the back and has better technique than anyone else currently in our back four. I actually think he could do an Alba and be a pretty darn good CB. As a fullback, he's decent enough, but not much more than that - too limited going forward and not good enough at defending to make it worthwhile.

We lose next to nothing in the air if he's partnering Maguire. If he's partnering Lindelof, then we are fecked, but we are fecked whoever is partnering him atm.

I can understand why a monster transfer like Sancho can take forever. But with a deal like this its unforgivable.

Exactly seems like we monitor the hell out of every situation. Our board they are voayers when you think about it.

It's not something we should be focusing on. Headed goals in the PL have gone from 205 10 years ago to just 107 last year. Defences have become too organised and defenders too athletic to make it a successful strategy. It's more difficult to get the crosses in to begin with, and to have somebody on the end of them.
That is an interesting stat! So why persist with big strong, tall and slow centre backs then?

Nope. Shaw is so defensively unaware it’s scary for a professional DEFENDER. I’d just replace him in the 11 (he’s good for the bench) with Telles and be done with it. That’s a good set of LBs tbf, Telles, Shaw and Williams.

You don't want him?
He's 28 and has no international caps.

If United sign a 28 year old, I'd want him to be a World Class player.

Just feels like yet another patch-job.

He may prove me wrong and be a top signing. But I very highly doubt it.

Yeah I am a bit wary of this one to be honest. Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but feels like a Rojo type signing to me.

He's not coming in to be first choice though, it's clear that Shaw is. It just provides us with experienced depth.

This.

I can't see him becoming anything other than a player we're desperately trying to shift with no success in a few years.

United need to recruit so much better.

Fair enough but we definitely need another left-footed option, he has different qualities to Shaw and is a leader with a bit about him (similar to Bruno).

He has Alex Sandro and Marcelo ahead of him. Even Robertson might not get a cap if he was Brazilian.

He's not 28 yet and he's got one cap. Also got called up for the next two qualifiers in October. He was just always behind Marcelo, Filipe Luis, and Sandro in the pecking order. He's only two years older than Bruno Fernandes.

Having said that, I'm also wary. The Rojo comparisons are a bit harsh though, even Sporting fans back then were a bit surprised that we wanted him while Telles is, by all accounts, considered one of the best players in the league.

Of course he’s not playing for Brazil, they have Marcelo and Alex Sandro! A lot of international players stay in squads on reputation so I don’t think that’s a negative for him. He has actually played a game for Brazil but interestingly when I looked it up, he’s also half Italian. Maybe we’re getting the best of both worlds!

He's been behind Marcelo and Sandro for Brazil, two outstanding left backs, so I wouldn't read too much into that.

I’m all for this by the way, he has great attacking stats and I’m fed up of not having any players overlap wide like a full back should, neither Shaw or Wan Bissaka do it remotely often enough. For all the criticism of TFM, the one thing I liked about his game on Saturday was that he actually played the position like I’d expect a fullback to!

also he’s 27 (soon to be 28) so has plenty of time. We need a few seasoned professionals anyway, we can’t have a team of 22-25yr olds, they wouldn’t have the mental fortitude.

I know nothing about this bloke but I'm assuming we will be struggling to offload him in a few years when he's underperforming and overpaid.

Who is doing that? None of the top teams have that type of player starting for them anymore. Cutting out crosses is basic stuff, defenders are now much more focused on reading and reacting to the ground play.

I don't understand the negativity over this one. Herrera barely kicked a ball for Spain but he was still a useful player. A world class left back wouldn't be costing €20m but Telles offers competition with Shaw and it's squad depth we need. Save the big pennies for right wing.

He is not a dribbling type LB like Reguilon but would definitely welcome him as he offers something in the final third and can take a quality set piece too

Didn't see much of him but people that have, say he is very solid, a leader and very good at crossing and dead ball situations.

I don't see any downsides for 20 mil.

You guys want Shaw who seems to always fall asleep defending to be right in the middle of the action?

Fair enough but it's a bit shit if you can't dribble well in the Premier League. Maybe I'm wrong.

Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t particularly good at dribbling. It shouldn’t be an issue if the team is well drilled.

We really should work on some clever corner passing routines. It’s got to make more sense than lumping it in the box.
This is a big big point. No amount of great players from an individual POV will work efficiently at our club if collectively the football doesn't allow them to express themselves better.

The overriding thing I like about him is he seems to be a leader and a strong character. Likely to lead by example and happy to give players a dressing down. Personality wise on the pitch he’s a bit like Bruno in that sense - win at all costs. we need more of those players.

Yeah and Bruno will probably know him pretty well from Sporting playing against Porto plenty of times

If he barely had a cap for Malta we might worry, but Brazil?
It'd be like saying a spanish midfielder is gub not getting into their team when they won three trophies in a row.
