This is where we disagreed earlier. The OP clearly states this round is Any player except those unsold and the next is Any player inc. Unsold (but doesn't state anywhere it is limited to unsold).
You're right. Didn't notice that. It's basically two open rounds with the leftover pool added to the last one (which is a bit pointless, then, but hey).

Like I said before the only real point to having a "leftover" category is if the managers ONLY have this pool to choose from in the last round.

Might as well have thrown the leftovers back in the general pool after reach round - as they don't actually serve any purpose.

On a similar note, one could ask whether the last round is necessary at all? If people can nominate their boys freely in this round anyway – and the leftovers have no particular restrictions put on 'em – why not just wrap it up with one last “finish yer business” round and be done with it?

Some nice looking teams put together. Looking forward to seeing some of the write ups on some of these players. Definitely a nice change of pace from the usual suspects.

Bobby Murdoch

His passing was said to be so perfect that one of his colleagues remarked with no real exaggeration that "he could land the ball on a thrupenny bit". Jim Craig highlighted the importance of Murdoch's playing ethos in that no matter how hard a time he was having in a match, he'd always be there for a pass or to help out. He was more than just a player in the Lisbon Lions.

Must add that when you first see him, it's hard to believe that he could be so skilful. He had a large frame and compared to modern footballers would seem unfit. However, he was anything but and the big teddy bear appearance just endeared him more to the fans. One story is said that Stein sent him to a health farm to lose weight only to come back heavier than before. The experiment was never repeated.

Most importantly, Murdoch played a vital part in the Lisbon Lions team who won the European Cup in 1967, and it was from Murdoch's shot that Stevie Chalmers deflected in the winner. Despite an ankle knock, he had been inspirational in that game. It may have been Chalmers' goal on paper, but likely Murdoch and the boys privately knew who was the real scorer behind it.

During his time at Celtic, he went on to win eight Scottish League titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups, as well as the European Cup medal, a magnificent haul for any man. He also played in the 1970 European Cup Final, when Celtic lost 2-1 to Feyenoord, where they were outplayed by the magnificent Dutch. Nevertheless, he never let this get him down and he plugged away.

He was voted Scottish Player of the Year in 1969 and was a key player in the success throughout the 1960's and early 1970's for Celtic FC. Jock Stein once said that Bobby Murdoch was the best player he ever managed, and remarked to esteemed journalist Hugh McIlvaney that Murdoch was the most comprehensively gifted player in the side (an amazing compliment when you take in that this side included Jimmy Johnstone). Jim Craig's quote "When Murdoch plays,Celtic play!" is an indication of how important Bobby was to the team.

The Lisbon Lions players themselves (including Jimmy Johnstone who was voted "The Greatest Ever Celtic Player") generally held the opinion that Bobby Murdoch was the best footballer of the Lisbon Lions. Despite the incredible skill, he wasn't afraid to stick up for himself either or for his team-mates if need be. His size gave him a visual advantage before he'd even approached the opposition player, with the legendary Man Utd manager Alex Ferguson being one man to feel the rage of "Chopper" in a legendary picture. It was to be Alex Ferguson's last match for Rangers, possibly scared off after this moment

Mark Lawrenson

"There are not too many really effective tacklers in the modern game. It has always been one of my firmest beliefs that the ball can be won by the collective effort of players working together to put the opposition under pressure. If you can force mistakes, you can regain possession by intercepting rash passes. There is not always the need to go sliding about on your backside at full stretch. It's a lesson that Liverpool learnt from playing against the best teams on the European mainland. But from time to time in a game, a defender may get isolated and asked to deal with a threat on his own by making a saving tackle. When that happens, Mark Lawrenson is the defender you should choose to make that tackle for you." - Bob Paisley

Tony Dunne

"Tony Dunne was possibly the quickest defender I ever saw. His marking ability was brilliant, and I recall telling a journalist who had commented on Tony's great form around the time we won the European Cup, 'Well, you know he's been the best left back in Europe for years. He goes like lightening.' ...he did have a kind of genius. He read an opponent so well that, with his speed, he could go out against any winger on earth confident of putting him in his pocket." - Sir Bobby Charlton

(Sir Stanley Matthews, Wilf Mannion, Nat Lofthouse)
Wilf Mannion - The Mozart of football, Golden boy, Wonder boy etc

A supremely gifted inside forward, Mannion was one of the finest inside-forwards the English game has ever seen.

His creative talents and sheer ability were never in doubt and he is up there with the likes of Raich Carter, Alex James, Johnny Haynes, Glenn Hoddle and Paul Scholes as amongst the best English playmakers in history.

Mannion was held in such high regard that the great Pele invited him to Brazil along with other England stars to pass on the secrets of their talents to youngsters. Yup you heard that right. He was invited by feckin Pele to teach football to the feckin Brazilians

The original 'Golden Boy' (before it became a hipster thing) during the 1940s on account of his mop of blond hair and precocious talent, he was once described by England team-mate Alf Ramsey as the ‘greatest soccer brain in modern football'. He was a marvellous, instinctive natural footballer.

A complete inside-forward, a fine ball player, an exceptional passer of the ball, he could cut through defences to score with a sudden, disconcerting change of pace.

He was a revelation for Middleborough as a youngster bursting onto the scene and left his teammates and the league alike gaping at his genius.

Jimmy Seed, the manager of Charlton Athletic, remarked: "Mannion is a marvel. I've never seen a boy take the ball away from experienced players in such tantalising fashion as this one."

Bryn Jones, one of the best players in the Football League at the time asked the Middlesbrough manager, Wilf Gallow: "Where on earth did you dig this little chap up? He's a wonder."

In a match against Liverpool, Mannion played against the international wing-half, Matt Busby. He later admitted that Mannion gave him a "run around" and described him as "Wonder Boy".

In a game against Blackpool on 10th December 1938, Mannion scored four goals and made several more as the club won the game 9-2. A local newspaper reported: "Standing out in this Brough victory, whirlwind-like, and leaving us almost breathless, was four goals Wilfred Mannion...

WW2 then intervened and threatened to put a cruel and abrupt end to his budding career.

A local newspaper actually reported that Mannion had been killed but he was one of the soldiers who was evacuated from Dunkirk. He fought in momentous and equally horrific battles(Western offensive in France, South Africa, Sicily and Anzio in Italy). It was no surprise that he almost lost it mentally.

Bertie Mee, who served with Mannion, later reported that: "He'd had such a rough time that medically he was downgraded, withdrawn from active service and sent to our convalescence depot. He had gone from an A1 to a B1 - the lowest grade still considered rehabitable. But when you're in the line and someone gets killed next to you, I can understand you losing it." He was sent to Cairo to recover but soon after arriving he developed malaria.

The fact that he recovered fully and went on to play some sensuous football is only testament to his mental resolve

His post-war domestic form was so good he won his won his first international cap for England against Northern Ireland on 28th September, 1946. Mannion being Mannion, scored a hat-trick in England's 7-2 victory.

Mannion retained his place and in that season played against Republic of Ireland (1-0),Wales (3-0), Holland (8-2), Scotland (1-1),France (3-0), Switzerland (0-1) and Portugal(10-0). He managed to score eight goals in eight games that year.

He went on to play for England in the 1950 WC but that absurdly talented side faltered and failed to cement their names in history as the best English side ever. The loss against US was one of the greatest upsets in the history of the WC.

He led a one man strike against his club regarding his wages in the 48/49 season and as a result didn't feature for Boro for a while and was dropped by England. What happened next was rather predictable.

This move upset England supporters. John Macadam of the Daily Express argued that "all the fatuities about football being a team game and the team being greater that the individual were exploded sky-high by the performance of the England team at Belfast; exploded by the absence of one man - Wilfred Mannion." Roy Peskett of the Daily Mail added: "By his temporary departure from football, Wilf Mannion has taken something from the England team that will be difficult to replace... In the two fixtures this season the England team has not shown the form which took them to the top of the international tree last season."

Needless to say without their star player, Middlesbrough had slipped from 4th to bottom in the league. However, once it was resolved and with Mannion back in the first-team, the club was able to avoid relegation that season due to Mannion's last minute heroics.

It just served to show how vital he was to Boro and the great England side which boasted the likes of Franklin, Finney, Wright and Matthews.

A genuine great who has rather unfortunately gone under the radar undeservedly.

Whats a write up without an obligatory collection of his peers havin a good ol wankfest over him

Wilf is my idea of a perfect inside partner.' ‘He was in a class of his own as a skilful strategist.' Wilf could turn on a sixpence and liked to play the short game. He had an instinctive football intellect. He was a beautiful player and a delight to the eye. On his day, there were few to touch him. So nice and modest."

“What could you say about Wilf Mannion, he was superb, for a small man he had exceptional heading ability, possessed speed, a powerful shot in both feet, stamina and ball skills which would leave me breathless.

Mannion was the Mozart of football - stylish, graceful, courtly, showing exquisite workmanship with the ball."

"Small in stature but surprisingly strong, Wilf was a footballing artist and a great entertainer.
"

"Wilf Mannion was a class-act, the inside-forward I rated as my perfect partner on the left-flank. He could have taught telepathy and had the uncanny knack of getting the ball to you at just the right angle and with just the right place."

Brian Clough who idolised Mannion - ‘Wilf played football the way Fred Astaire danced,'

‘Even if we were given a cheque for £50,000 we would not transfer Mannion,' the Boro manager said. ‘Why should we let the best player in Britain go?'

"I did not play with Mannion very often, but on the few occasions we did get together, I was impressed, more than anything else, by his positional skill.

In other words Wilf is an easy player to get along with: he knows instinctively where to find the open space and wastes no time running into it; he sees in a second whether to get a quick pass or hold the ball, and spends so much time doing the academically correct thing that colleagues around him can hardly fail to fall into the scheme of things, thus elevating their own games on Mannion's prompting."

"
Wilf had a field day. He certainly caused chaos. That is typically Mannion, always plotting and scheming to get results the easy way and what is easier than two short passes leaving a player free to shoot at goal."

In the late 1950s Winterbottom rated Mannion as the ‘greatest of our inside-forwards since the end of the war in 1945, an artist reliant exclusively on sheer skill'.

When England were struggling for form during the World Cup in Sweden in 1958, Walter Winterbottom told journalists: ‘I would give a lot for another Wilf Mannion right now.

‘The most notable partnership over the past dozen years for England has been that of Wilf Mannion and Tom Finney, reaching its sublimation in the famous 10-0 win against Portugal in 1947,'
‘Wilf had stunning ball-control and high deftness of touch.
‘He was always prepared to fit in with Finney, a clear indication of his greatness. When a super player in his own right is prepared to subordinate himself to the optimum needs of the team, he puts severe stresses on his own inclinations. But in doing it he confirms his own greatness.'

"There is no question about it - Wilf was a genius. He had a football player's brain to start with - one which didn't need to be coached. He was quicksilver in his thought. every time he passed you knew you had bags of time to play the ball... The ability was there, the desire was there and the confidence was there. He used to give you the ball at the right time and would always be in the right place to get it back again."

Apologies for the extremely long post but I couldn't help it . Well worth the read.

One of the most absurdly talented player in the English game but doesn't quite get the recognition he deserves. In fact, the late 40s English side, arguably the best English or the most talented English side ever, doesn't quite get the plaudits it deserved.

After all this was a side which featured the likes of *****, Wright, Franklin, Matthews, Carter, Mannion, Finney, Mortenson and ***** amongst others. I can say with a straight face that they were good enough to win the 1950 WC but ultimately flatterted to deceive. Such a shame.

Appreciate that, Joga - but there are a couple of more spoilers there that should read "Fellow Player".

Does it matter? Its v.easy to find the player just by googling the quote anyway.
Yeah, I know. It makes it slightly less obvious, though.

I said before that it's probably best not to post articles, links, quotes and whatnot which give away unpicked players. It's no big deal, though.

The real question is whether there'll be a single player in any of these matches who wasn't at some point, according to Pele or Matthews or Eusebio's granny, THE most talented fecker who ever walked the earth ;)

Yeah removed the name of one obvious English striker but I was generally against **** some players there as it makes the quote carry less weight .

I did hype him a lot I admit but it was simply due to him being a relative unknown. Same thing for Franklin. For the more well known ones like Armfield and Greig it was more or less copy pasting from 1 or 2 sites with a minimum of fuss. Not going to do a write up for the likes of Scholes or Souness etc.

When players you've played with, managers both yours and the opposition ones, opposing players and national newspapers all rush to lavish praise on you, it's got to count for something. There were actually more quotes and snippets but didn't want to make it any longer and bore everyone .

Ultimately you have to take what posters say about their players with a pinch of salt but I've tried to be as factual and informative as I can and limit my own opinion on him the best I could except for a few sentences on him.

Well, might as well admit it, I fecked up the Stuart Pearce thing, I was meant to take him in the snake draft and got my maths confused.

@crappycraperson don't know how you want to play it if I lose Pearce and take a 5 mil hit then I can't complete my squad anyway or I could just give up my 14 mil and stay as I am.

A never-nude? I thought he just liked cut-offs.

What's the problem Stobz? As far as I can tell you've completed your squad already. You've got 12 players and enough non-English players, and 14m left over. You don't have to take part in the snake rounds if your squad is already completed as far as I know.

Ultimately you have to take what posters say about their players with a pinch of salt but I've tried to be as factual and informative as I can and limit my own opinion on him the best I could except for a few sentences on him.
It's fine, man - everyone does it and it's part of the game.

It's great to read about old players - I love that. Always best to keep in mind that some sources are probably more reliable than others and more helpful when it comes to determining what sort of player X really was.

Aye - from what I can gather we can nominate freely until the deadline expires. Crappy set a 24hr deadline at 4 this morning - and this will be the final round before the snake rounds. In other words, the "unsold" category is scrapped.

Ah, excellent then. I can still get my wildcard in the snake :-)
Snake draft isn't mandatory, but there's a minimum bid of 10M to be in it. Clarifying, just in case. Psycho was a great pick, I'm still baffled no one planned to get him or have a little bidding war (with Cole in turn going for several times that money).

There's still one draft regular who hasn't had a mention, which is odd. I get it, his English yadda yadda, but still odd.

My snake picks are a bit pointless, to be honest. One I'm pretty sure is 100% safe given what people already have in place - and the other one is mainly for kicks.

Still, no sense in nominating either if there's a chance, no matter how small, that someone decides to start trouble.

Not sure who you have in mind, but it could be down to the non English quota.

There are several non English players, however, I'm baffled people haven't picked up given what they HAVE picked up in the same position(s).

I thought folk would be gagging to get the top full-backs given the relative lack of quality there when compared against some of the wingers. Now it seems like I've overpaid. Then again Lynk had Cole up in the early 40s at one point and he's the one man I'd want in my corner if we get drawn against a Matthews or Johnstone.
