The “shrugged off” vs “deliberately elbowed” debate misses the most important point of all. Exactly what did Robertson do and say to him that provoked the response? The initial position of the enquiry here should always be on the side of the match official. Why did he do what he did? That’s even more important than what he actually did.

When Robertson sits down in the cold light of day he should be embarrassed. He really is coming across as a massive baby.

When fans of other codes laugh at players diving in football, the response was always "you just don't understand. They dive to gain an advantage for their team (penalty, free kick, red card, etc). Not because they're pampered little babies".

Turns out I was wrong. What does he gain from making such a big deal of this apart from looking like a whiny little bitch?

The only conclusion is that Robertson is such an arrogant pampered millionaire that he thinks he can shout abuse at and grab the linesman's arm and the linesman should just take it. The linesman shugged him off and may have made some minimal inconsequential contact with his neck. That Robertson is so horrified by that reaction says it all.

Keane absolutely nailed it. What a baby.

Only captains should be allowed go approach officials. Auto yellow for all others. That’ll stop those crowding the ref etc

Learned behaviour from Keane. The first person to say that was Beckham in response to LeBeouf of Chelsea many years ago

Did I see right that the linseman has been suspended?

Jesus fecking Christ, if true. Only for Liverpool would that happen. Linseman clearly just put his arm up as a "don't grab me" gesture.

Keane is right

I don't think it should even be investigated though. It's a load of nothing. Grown fecking men.
Of course it’s going to be investigated. Just because Keane called him a big baby doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be investigated. It’s an official, this never happens so common sense tells you it will be investigated

Robbie Savage would disagree with that on multiple counts. He just got on with it / people had more common sense

He is a referee, he can't behave like that, no matter how much of a baby Robertson is. Just report to the main referee and get Robertson sent off if he was disrespectful.

You don't expect a policemen to start swinging if someone is disrespectful, do you?

Referees should set an example, not promote even more shitty behaviour.

So essentially two main facts have been reinforced:

Robertson remains the biggest twat in the premier league

Keane remains the biggest pundit legend.

...baby

Let me put it a different way, if a player had done what the linesman did, he would get a straight red card. In my opinion the linesman should have been replaced at half time by the spare ref

Strongly disagree

Most other players wouldn’t have even reacted to it because the linesman barely touched him, even if he did at all and was obviously just nudging Robertson off him, who touched him first

Let’s not act like the linesman just ran up to him and attacked him.

The baby cnut needs to grow up

Fact, the linesman elbowed him on the chin and IF it had been a player doing that they would have been off. Full stop. Regardless of your dislike for the player invoked it doesn’t change the facts

Well i'd argue that it's not fact that he elbowed him on the chin. And if it was, then this investigation would be short and sweet

And if a referee or lineman went to grab a player and shout in their face and the official lifted their arm to nudge them away, I would say it is fair game

I have no pre-incident feelings about Robertson whatsoever, and would definitely be saying the same if it was a United player

Why doesn't common sense every come into play.

Robertson approaches the official to moan, in an aggressive hostile manner, Robertson grabs the officials arm, the official reacts by lifting his arm upwards and as a consequence briefly touches Robertson. Robertson makes a big deal out of it, Henderson (obviously) gets involved and there's drama.

It is a complete and utter farce that it's being highlighted and discussed at all.

If anything, Robertson should receive punishment for laying hands on an official.

Only captains should be permitted to speak to an official to eradicate this scenario. It's a joke

As I said before, the official can get in trouble because he had previous. He once punched a dude when he was aiming to be referee, hence why he can only be a lino now. Deliberate or not, that will work against him.

Robertson has to accept some responsibility and repercussions too but the linesman cannot go around doing that. He needs to face an investigation and possible punishment whatever that may be

It’s a nothing incident in the grand scheme of things. Hope Robertson called the linesman after the match and sorted it out.

Obviously, an official can’t elbow a player or whatever it was, but players really shouldn’t be touching the refs either (should cost an automatic yellow card imo).

At Wycombe a few seasons ago a boozed up moron got used to spending all games screaming abuse at players from the comfort of the stand.
He saw one of our players at the local Tesco after a defeat and thought he'd abuse him from a few metres away.

Got a well deserved butt in the face.
Then was crying over socials about it.

It's that.
Good on the player for that. Modern society has made people far, far too comfortable with believing that their words should have no consequences. It's not even me trying to be a hard man or anything but people need to be reminded of this in ways like this sometimes, I think.
