His height isn't a problem for me (he isn't playing at centre back) but he does look like he could bulk up a little.
If anything, history suggests it’s probably the opposite. Was? Still is a massive problem looking at some of these posts. It’s ridiculous because there are literally so many examples out there.
Exactly. But you know he’ll struggle against mighty PL defenders apparentlyIf anything, history suggests it’s probably the opposite.
Pep’s Barcelona looked like a bunch of kids playing football in fast-forward, guided by their dad Gerard Pique. That didn’t stop them being the best team we ever saw.
Messi didn’t do that bad either. Btw, Maradona is probably 10cm shorter than Gomes.
Exactly this.If the club ever saw a problem with his height they'd have released him a long time ago, it's a fairly common thing with young footballers.
The fact that he's here and getting senior minutes shows his physicality isn't an issue.
You would think that this myth should have been binned by now.Exactly. But you know he’ll struggle against mighty PL defenders apparently
Like Groundhog Day in here at times. You would think that this myth should have been binned by now.
After the likes of Kante, Torreira, Scholes, Sanchez, Hazard, Modric have all bossed the PL.
Correct me if i'm wrong. But pretty sure Gomes was coming back from injury which is why he struggled to get into the England setup no?Aaron Lennon was rapid.
I'm a big Gomes fan but I think its fair to have a concern about his lack of physicality. It isn't just to do with his height. Although he isn't slow, his pace is unremarkable and for England in the u17 World Cup he struggled with stamina.
I worry that he lacks physical attributes in a few areas rather than being like Lennon, who was exceptional in one physical regard whilst being very short.

Height looks fine. It's his limb proportions that give the illusion that he's even shorter than he already isMan's growing
I think it's fair to say you have to be exceptional to be a small player who makes it at a top side. Fortunately Gomes is talented enough to have a chance.Nonsense talk, saying he is too small. Most of the best players in the world were small.
Does it matter if a player is 5’3, 5’5 or 5’6? I think the fact that you have players like Scholes, Xavi, Iniesta, Maradona and Messi proves that you can be small, and not just good, but great! You could argue that their is a law of diminishing return, and that each cm/inch these players had on Angel gave them the edge they needed to compete. But it could also be the other way around; that the competitive advantage the other players on the field achieve by being bigger is diminshing. It sounds more probable in my opinion. A player like Messi or Iniesta will not take on a player like Zlatan in a manner that would let him use his size to his advantage.I think you are missing my point. Firstly, you are comparing with players 3 - 5 inches taller than him and David Silva has decent pace. Gomes lacks in physical attributes in a number of areas. Perhaps Mata is the closest comparison because he is weak but also very slow for a football player.
I'm not saying he can't make it, just that it will be harder for him and it might cap just how good he can become, like it has Mata. Not that we'd be complaining if he became as good as Mata.
Zola worth a mention too.You would think that this myth should have been binned by now.

Not sure he deserves to be in such exalted company quite yet...You would think that this myth should have been binned by now.

Cerebral.His head is massive.
He's smaller than even Valbuena? He's only half an inch smaller than Valbuena who had a decent career, plus he has bags of talent. I don't care for his height, and judging by pictures he doesn't look weak at all, very average weight by the look of it for a footballer. As long as he can produce the goods let him play. Besides, its not unusual to see smaller than average players in their respective positions, Cannavaro was 5'9 and a centreback.
Pretty sure Valbuena is 5'4.He's smaller than even Valbuena?
Good. He most likely would have got a championship loan and clubs at the top battling for promotion wouldn't have taken a risk on Gomes. Clubs at the bottom wouldn't either and most likely don't play football that suits Gomes' style. Really don't know why there's such a push to loan out all your talents these days.Man Utd starlet's loan blocked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he's set for first-team

Loaning is just a such a risky thing and it hardly ever reaps rewards. The best system would be for clubs to have smaller feeder clubs, perhaps linked geographically, to give these players to and let them get competitive football in a familiar environment (similar players, play style etc).Good. I would like to see Gomes get a chance in Herrera's position. After seeing Verratti, I think Gomes is our best chance at getting that type of midfielder.Would love to see him get a chance in the lingard position.
He isn'tCan someone tell me once and for all if he is actually Nani's cousin - as in their parents are actually siblings - or if it's just one of those online misunderstandings that got out of control. I had the impression it was the latter, but Sky state it as a fact in their Gomes-Chong-Garner intro article, published today.
Cheers. I guess since political journalists barely fact-check any more, it's optimistic to expect sports hacks to do it at all.He isn't

He's actually his godfather. Nani and his dad are good friends. He isn't
I think it's to do with some cultures calling their parents best friends uncles and aunties, I have an auntie whi isn't really my auntie, just my mothers best friend growing up.Can someone tell me once and for all if he is actually Nani's cousin - as in their parents are actually siblings - or if it's just one of those online misunderstandings that got out of control. Also my girlfriend is Chinese, and she has about a billion aunties, uncles, cousins and nephews etc, this past Christmas was absolute hell trying to remember who was an actual relative compared to associated relative.
Don’t rub in the fact that you have a girlfriend on a football forumI think it's to do with some cultures calling their parents best friends uncles and aunties, I have an auntie whi isn't really my auntie, just my mothers best friend growing up.
