Arsenal 2023/24 - Born to be runner up

Villa and Pool win tomorrow, they are 5th. So much for title contenders and improvement under arteta
5th by being a point behind. With the most clean sheets, the least % of shots faced and the second best defence. Compared to Utd with a negative GD which you know as well as me isn't sustainable but carry on.

Despite heavy spending, they look like a shadow of themselves from last year. Spurs have taken their place.

Our worst start to a league in 100 years (or something) and we are only 6 points behind the best ever Arsenal team.
I’m not really sure what that proves. If you extrapolated that out over a season you’d end up more than 20 points behind us.

They were shite going forward today. The types of games where you really see the difference between having Nketiah and a top level striker.

Also Havertz is crap. Worst transfer of the season.

Eh??
One defeat and they're being found out? They were robbed of at least a point tonight.
I wouldn’t attempt to make sense of it. This thread is a bit of a car crash after every bad Arsenal result.

Worth it to piss Arteta off tbh  if roles were reversed he'd be grinning like a dickhead and saying how great VAR is.

Like Klopp, a walking hypocrite. Doesn't give a flying feck if it goes in his favour, celebrates it.... will overplay his players and bring them on in pointless situations and I bet he'll be moaning about fixture congestion in April.

They've not been as good this season so far and their league position flatters them.

They got lucky last year and outperformed their xG. Back to their real level this year.

Also hit by injuries which will make things harder.

I have never ever seen a group of fans whining on and on about one decision. Weeks ago now. I didn't remember us going on about the VERY soft foul at OT last week robbing us off a lead? Every team who isn't City or Newcastle get fecked every week, its like RAWK 2008.

We have scored just 5 less goals than City. This is with Eddie fecking Nketiah leading our line. The way the league is run by an oil club (now about to be 2 of them) ending in Top 4 isn't the worst thing ever.
You must not have been alive for long or been an Arse fan for long if you are writing this. It's just peak irony.

You Arse fans are truly delusional. The guy was going on about how you've had one loss all season and I rightfully pointed out you should have lost against us if you think crying over the goal today is warranted.

And don't go on about your results and goals, most of them scored against fodder teams. You've been total dross this season and should have also lost against Chelsea who themselves are nothing to write home about.

You've also spent £65m on that clown Havertz that could have gone towards buying someone like Kolo Muani or even Hojlund who's much closer to the profile of player you're missing. However, your jack-in-a-box Spanish fraud decided to cosplay as Pep and played himself.

All in all, I love seeing the bubble burst in real time, shame it's going to benefit our cheating neighbours and those annoying scousers. You had one job and last season you bottled it, now it's time to go back to your top 4 box.

Touchline ban for Arteta ?

You can tell he's starting to feel the pressure a bit.

Enjoyed that game despite the disappointing result. Was expecting dropped points here TBH. Personally I thought the ball had gone out of play for their goal but it is what it is. Knew we'd be in for a very close game and that's exactly how it played out, few chances for either team with Newcastle just getting that bit of luck you need in a close match. Once they scored I didn't think we'd get one back as defensively Newcastle know how to lock down. Think we missed Odegaard big time, Saka hasn't been as effective since Partey and now Odegaard have been out, as our right side is weaker.

We weren’t good going forward, but neither were Newcastle. It was a very even game, a very tough place to go, a game you’d probably be accepting of a point and going back down the road. So in that way, it was going to plan.

Agree with you about Nketiah and Havertz though.

I think Newcastle were a lot better going forward. Saliba had a good game though.

They were better but not sure it was by too much. They had 2 shots on target all game, we had 1. It was a very tight game with few clear-cut chances. And yeh Saliba really is a great defender, never panics and seems to be able to dribble or shimmy himself out of tight situations. Hard to believe he's only 22, shows so much composure.

Improving upon last season is never guaranteed, even if you spend a fortune.

I can’t see them coming close this season and who knows what will happen next.

But it’s always fun when then lose.

Spurs are better and have spent far less than Playmobil head.

This season is a completely different kettle of fish and I agree that I don't know what's going to happen next. There are 3-4 teams looking like they're in the title race, whereas it was only us and City last season. I can never take Spurs all that seriously but I'm Australian so have a soft spot for Big Ange. Still early days, 1 loss from 11 is a very good start to the season and we've already played City, United, Chelsea, Tottenham and now Newcastle.

There are some weird reactions on here, I'd rather be in Arteta's shoes compared to Erik's that's for certain. Last season the Arsenal team set a benchmark and realistically lost the title due to inexperience and not having winners in the team to set the expectations.

You've won 7 and only lost 1 game this season, because it's early doors I understand some United fans thinking us being close is some achievement due to the abysmal performances but if you expand those games to 22 instead of 11, the points gap would be more significant as a poster highlighted above.

No team has really played exceptionally, so this season could be one where there's less separation but City typically get their stride in the new year as we've been here before. The difference with United is Arsenal aren't playing great but there's evidence as of last season to show they can. We under Erik haven't had the luxury of playing well consistently, so why there's hope for things to improve there's not much evidence to support that desire.

Yeah, I get that being "only 6 points" behind us doesn't seem so bad considering how your season is going so far, but the glaring problem IMO for you lot is your horrible goal difference - you have the worst goal difference (-4) in the top 10. Crystal Palace (who are 10th) is the only other team to have a negative goal difference. After 11 games, that's pretty shocking and all the United fans I know feel top 4 would be a miracle on this form.

No offense but there is no title race in November ,we have seen this time and time again early part of the season you could have few teams clustered around the top to give the impression of tight race amongst multiple teams for the title but that seldom last and I am more than confident that by the time 3/4 season is done that won't be the case .

Infact there is more chance of it not even being the race by the time business end of the season rolls along than it being 3-4 Clubs competing for the title.

Fair point and I don't disagree, that's why I said 3-4 teams "look like" they're in the race. It is quite different to last season where we were the only team that looked like challenging City and led 75% of the season. But it's seeming like there are more teams in the mix ATM. Personally I think Liverpool or Arsenal are City's biggest threats, Liverpool not being in CL will probably give them an edge. I agree we're not really in a title race this early early in the season - we just have to keep pace with City as best as possible.

At the moment Liverpool looks like the team best placed to Challenge City , Arsenal need to get back their fluidity in Attack to last the Distance .
See Tottenham more of a team which would get dragged back into the mix for top 4 scrap as the season progressess.

I am surprised we didn't out bid Arsenal for Havertz. He seems suited to us.

They were gifted a win against us that should have been a loss.

They have been total garbage in attack and it's clear Arteta is out of his depth managing on multiple fronts, as I predicted last season.

I never rated them and I'm more convinced than ever this will just end up with Wenger V2 where they make top 4 but win the sum of feck all
With all due respect, id much rather be on Arsenals position then ours currently.

One loss on the league and top of their European group, hardly class that as found out.

yeah but we know we’re shit. you don’t seem to realise your team is full of mentally weak, good-time charlies that will never better last season’s failures.

Havertz is shit ! Arteta’s a nob. Glad it happened. Ball was in play, foul is subjective and nobody knows offside rule anymore so stick that up ya pipe and smoke it.

What?

You did feck all the whole game. You were camped in your half most of the game and had one shot on target outside of your goal. Onana had to save you on occasions.
