Mad he’s younger than Ten Hag considering how much success he’s had across multiple clubs

Could say the same for ETH to be fair. Can we class him as overachieving? Since he won a cup first season and finished 3rd in a toxic environment. Imagine him if he had the set up he had at Ajax. I think you could say that with most managers to be fair. Some may be good but in the wrong environment where as some could be overachieving at clubs in the right environment.
Emery's full failure season at Arsenal saw City won the league with 98 points (won domestic Treble that season. Liverpool ran them close at 97 points too), where the other 3 top 4 all are European cup competitions' finalists. Arsenal finished 5th couple points 3rd place, and 1 point less than 4th place. Emery's Arsenal lost EL to Chelsea (Chelsea also made League Cup final). So Arsenal narrowly missed out CL qualification on two fronts, beaten by definite better teams at the time. The form in 19-20 season definitely deserved the sacking but ironically it was not that worse than Arteta's start for 20-21 season. There is a difference in trust for Arteta from Arsenal hierarchy. Also when Emery got sacked after 13th game, they were one point ahead of us (finished third with joint 66 points to Chelsea at the end of the season) (Also one point ahead of Tottenham. It was an uniquely weird season even before COVID pandemic hit mid season)!!! Narrowly beaten by Liverpool in League Cup in penalty shootout after a high scoring thriller draw in 90 minute of play. Already qualified for KO round of EL where he seems to be a specialist at. So how things went for Ole and us, then Arteta, it seems to imply Emery was not "given the time". Perhaps, his personal character is not that popular to the players and the higher management when things went sour?

ETH overachieved in term of initial expectation for last season. However, in term of new obstacle and advantage during the season we only went as far as our means allowed. The League Cup win was within our ability which we achieved. Liverpool Tottenham Chelsea had a terrible season compared to their place the previous season, as well as Aston Villa lost too much ground under Stevie Me before their transformation under Emery to threaten us, allowed us the clean shot at top 4. We did well ourselves to finish comfortably third place, but not super overachieved given that we didn't have a title winning form like, and showed weaknesses by slipping up against tougher teams away from home. Things that are expected to be improved the future which is now!!!

I can't be arsed to fact check, but according to Reddit he has won 77 points in 38 PL games for Villa!

That sort of form would make them top 4 in 9 out of the last 10 seasons. 2nd place twice.
"Only turns up v Man. United" apparently. No we've just been in incredible form for pretty much all of 2023. We're basically mirroring what Newcastle did as soon as Howe came in the previous year.

It's a sensational fit for all parties especially as Emery wanted another crack at the premier league after the difficult Arsenal experience.

Failed at Arsenal though… another case of a decent manager at an alright team but can’t take the next step.
They got to 5th and europa league final...only last season have they done better in nearly a decade (16-17 they finished 5th and won FA cup so that's marginal).

The problem at Arsenal was he had Ozil playing up every five minutes after being indulged in Wenger's final years and Aubameyang was also I imagine difficult behind the scenes. Likes of Sokratis and David Luiz at the back... :houllier:

He did his best and gave Saka and Martinelli their debuts at 17 years old. Give him those two now and Odegaard and Saliba and he'd do no worse than Arteta imo.

What was he expected to do with Villarreal and Sevilla? He won what he could have, even more impressive with Villarreal as they won their first ever trophy.
He did very well in Europe with Villareal, but in the league their performance wasn't great.

I'd say he's overachieving at Villa relative to what he's shown at other clubs. He's good but not this good.

He signed Saliba didn’t he?

It's Arsenal recruitment team work. Yes Salina signed when Emery was still the manager, had a season loan back to his former club as the deal. Arteta for some reasons didn't rate Saliba until last season, sending him on loan for extra 2 seasons.

Fair enough. Wasn’t saying he’s not a decent manager because he clearly is. And your middle paragraph is similar to ETH with us right now. He’s got so much going on and so many injuries but he’s not aloud that excuse according to some fans.

He's my fav manager after De Zerbi, Ange, Howe dropped out from top 4 :). All Caf's favorite managers of the week

Joking aside, Emery is elite, always has been, his CV speaks for himself. But he has track record of falling out with the board and players, especially at big clubs, so there is something to think about before clubs consider him as their next manager. Maybe working at non-profile's club is what he's good at?

Emery inherited a difficult situation at Arsenal. I dont think it was easy for him in the slightest and most managers would have tripped up. Taking over for Wenger was always going to be brutal. There were some very good transfers but there were also some horrible ones and he needed to overhaul a rather unmotivated team that had in large parts checked out. I don't disagree when they fired him because they had to be worried at the time where the bottom was. We were getting thumped as well in some games.

I always thought he had the potential to be a good manager for us. The choice to get him in the first place was a fair one.

Assessing Emery at Arsenal is quite difficult. He had the difficult post Wenger job, however unlike Moyes we weren’t at a high point of just winning the league. And as well as the changes on the park, we were a bit of a mess off the park, with Gazidas, Mislintat, Sanllehi all involved in a bit of a power struggle at the time, with a mix mash of transfer dealings.
Emery didn’t really make the signings, remember he wanted Maguire, Zaha and Partey and instead got the likes of Luiz, Torriera, Pepe, a raw Saliba and Tierney.

On the face of things Emery did well his first season, a point off 4th, a Europa League final, so close to Champions League qualification on both counts. However, when you think that we were in 4th place with a few weeks to go, and that a victory at home against Crystal Palace would have all but sealed 4th and he played a much changed team after the Europa Quarter Final vs Napoli, and then we lost subsequent games vs Wolves and Leicester and drew with Brighton, it was a mighty collapse.

Then the performance in the final itself was really poor, so we blew both chances for Champions League football. That really was the beginning of the end for him, we never really seemed to recover from that going into the following season.

Im probably being unfair given the level of teams he’s managed, by I always sort of judge Emery as an expert cup manager, especially in Europe, but basically performed as par level in terms of league placements.

Emery is a very nice guy, everyone liked him at Arsenal. But he was a not that good at managing big players and egos. He lost the support of players at PSG and Arsenal which was the primary reason of his sacking from both clubs.

Arsenal squad let him down as he couldn't handle Ozil,Auba, Laca etc who were mocking Emery in second season. Arteta came and cleaned up everything, that's why board supported him. Emery is at the right club now, fans have less expectations and players respond to him. It will be different if he goes to manage another top club where expectations and pressure will be higher.

I don't see Emery winning the Premier League with any team either. But realistically that's not even in play at the moment. Also think Villa's recruitment has been right up there. Those can help you look good or bad.

Emery didn't have the same backing as Arteta from the board. The whole team needed a turn over at the time. Those mentioned players didn't respond to Arteta either. Arteta got the support from the board first, and then almost kick out everyone in the team.

What a job he is doing, even leapfrogged city now, villa point total since he joined must be title challenging worthy?

Last time i read he got almost the same points as Arteta for the same period, without spending 400m.

I thought it would've been your typical 1-0 scrap against Pep's City where you hang on for your life.

No. Just checked the stats and they had 22 shots to City's 2!

“Defensive manager” kept city to a 0.0 xg from the 10th min with his team having about 20 shots on goal. Never seen a team do that to city before:

I doubt another manager in the league has bettered those stats against pep's City.

Wow they absolutely battered them. Given we aren't winning anything, would be so poetic if Emery pips Arteta to the title.

This is what can happen when the players you buy improve the squad & your manager takes responsibility for improving the players already at the club.

They’ll eventually fall away but it’s another example you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to improve a team.

Perfect club for him. Villa are a Valencia / Villarreal of England. Working out a treat.

Crazy turn around for Villa considering their fall and even relegation in the not so distant past. He’s doing a great job, fair play.

Not quite, 81 points from 40.

Excellent considering where they came from.

Not even surprised they got a result against City, especially with Rodri absent. Have looked very dangerous at home this season.

When I said the summer Villa had one of the best midfields in the league, some people scoffed at the notion but look at them now. Serious outfit.
