Aston Villa appoint Unai Emery as manager

On the one hand Emery could win the Conference League

On the other the extra games could mean Villa finish bottom half.

We won't just go with same squad next season, we will sign 2-3 top level ones hopefully and then another 2-3 for squad depth.

I don't think West Ham's issue this season was Europa as they finished previous season 7th despite making SF of europa league, more their big signings from last summer not really working out until last few months of the season.

I'm not saying it will happen but the Thursday Sunday rotation takes its toll. Villa will need to really strengthen and avoid injuries to finish as high next season while also going far in the tournament.

Villa have already won the European cup so do they even need to win this? Maybe they'll sack it off as soon as the league looks in danger.

It does if you have a really small squad. That was always our problem in O'Neill seasons as we had little beyond our regular 11 in those days.

Emery with all his european experience is too savvy to get caught out. Villareal finished 7th winning the europa in 20/21 so no huge drop off there.

It's also lower standard opposition compared to what you get in europa league when you look at the respective runs West Ham have had so I think we can mix and match a bit in the group stage personally as we do have some talented young players who've done well on loan this season.

His points hull since taking over must be champions league levels, He will probably make some good spanish/la liga signings to help him for next season.

They’ll go far in Europe with with him in charge. Probably call a few places next season

Maybe teams don't just turn up against us, maybe we are not as good as we think we are!
While I agree we are not as good as we think we are, but he is stil a game raising clown that turns up against us.

Game raising cnut only turns up against us.

We were s*** today. However end of last season we lost to you yet got a 1-1 v Liverpool which finally ended their top 4 hopes.

Is he the clear third best manager in the league right now?
No he’s one of the arguable choices along with Poch, Ten Hag, Howe amongst others. There’s a lot of top quality coaches in the premier league at this moment so it’s pretty hard to pick between them all. Only Klopp and Pep are a level above.

Is he the clear third best manager in the league right now?
Absolutely. The transformation at Villa added to the fact he took a small town to the semi final of the Champions League and won the Europa with a fairly tight budget. His team's play good football too, I think he's a class act.

Yes. Honours wise he has won the EL with two different clubs and an unprecedented three in a row with Sevilla. Also won multiple things with PSG and got to the EL final with Arsenal. Wouldn't be surprised to see him win the ECL with Villa this season.

No chance.

Klopp and Pep have probably nailed down the top two slots but there's a bunch of managers in the tier below that. He'd be one of them but there's no way you can definitively say he's the best of them.

Why not?

On 2023 points haul we're ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool and just behind Man. City.

He also won his first two games before the World cup break.

If we look at his resume he is clearly the third best in the league

4x Europa League
1x French League
2x French Cup
2x French League Cup
2x French Supercup

Nah, managing PSG is an open goal domestically and his lack of any trophies outside France during that spell goes against him, if anything. And the EL has always been a Mickey Mouse competition. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was one penalty save away from adding that one to his cv.

He should've been winning the league at Sevilla then?!

I'd say the europa league has added in importance since a CL place was added.

Outside of Sevilla's extreme dominance with some of those wins coming under UE you'd had Chelsea, Man. United and Atletico Madrid all winning the competition in last six seasons. He then took Villareal to the SFs of CL the next season.

I'd say the only serious failure in his coaching career so far was Arsenal but that also comes with a caveat as it took Arteta 18 months to sort out the dressing room so it was a very bad one to take directly replacing Wenger, Emery would do far better with their squad now and he gave Martinelli and Saka debuts at 17.

It's very possible to make the argument for it, yeah. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter, it's down to personal preference, but it's absolutely possible to make an argument for it without it being outlandish. I think he's great, and he comes across as a lovely guy.

What was he expected to do with Villarreal and Sevilla? He won what he could have, even more impressive with Villarreal as they won their first ever trophy.

Who would you put on par with Emery?

I can't be arsed to fact check, but according to Reddit he has won 77 points in 38 PL games for Villa!

That sort of form would make them top 4 in 9 out of the last 10 seasons. 2nd place twice.

Wow, shame about his Arsenal stint (or lucky maybe) cause he'd be in the running for the Utd job with how he's done there.
I would not say his time with Arsenal is a failure given the state of the club at the time. He never had the same backing from the board like Arteta. The team needed a huge turnover at the time.

Probably true, this is the league table for the calendar year

IIRC, 79 points for 4th place only happened once in Moyes 13-14 season. The next bests are 75 and 76 point for 4th place, had only happened a few times over the entire history.

So in the history of PL, only one season that 77 point tally would be denied 4th place.

If we ever sack ETH, the obvious replacement would be Emery.

Chelsea

Everton and Bournemouth had 2 games in hand to get 2 points to put Chelsea at the bottom of all "active PL teams in a whole calendar year".

Failed at Arsenal though… another case of a decent manager at an alright team but can’t take the next step.
It's hard to say, because the 2 "next step" opportunities he's had, at Arsenal and PSG, were very toxic/poor environments (which would also be the case if he were to join us). It's hard to say how he'd do at a top club in the right circumstances, because that hasn't happened yet.

Could say the same for ETH to be fair. Can we class him as overachieving? Since he won a cup first season and finished 3rd in a toxic environment. Imagine him if he had the set up he had at Ajax. I think you could say that with most managers to be fair. Some may be good but in the wrong environment where as some could be overachieving at clubs in the right environment.
