Australia 1 - 0 Uruguay

Australia are a clean sheet away from their 1st appearance in the WC sine 1978 after beating Uruguay at the MCG tonight, 1-0. Australia's only goal came from the penalty spot, when Kevin Muscat tucked home after Paul Agostino was pushed in the box 12 minutes from time.

We're going to the WC Boys! One clean sheet and we're there!

C'mon Aussies!

I'm in two minds about Australia. I want you to get through because I'll never forget those two WC qualifying matches against Argentina in 1993 when I thought you were really unlucky, but on the other hand if you get there this time I couldn't bear the possibility that you might manage a draw against us if we're drawn in the same group.

And Ireland are a class side, of course. England have as much chance as anyone of reaching the final quite frankly. Even your lot - all it needs is a couple of one off results in the knockout stages.

Congratulations on a great result and keeping a clean sheet. Though only half the work is done.

Being an Irish supporter, I've had more than enough disappointment when it comes to play offs. Do not count your chickens my friend, Uruguay will be a tougher proposition at home as Iran, who IMO are an inferior side to Uruaguay, proved against us.

Being better than than the opposition is not a divine right to qualify and this is where Australia can benefit. It's all down to concentration now lads. Good luck! ;)

Well what can I say, I was on the edge of my of my seat the whole match, where I think, a 1-0 win for us does not actually show what should have been the score.

We should have won atleast 2-0, but thats football.

MOM IMO goes to Craig Moore for a world class defensive match. Well done to the 'ger.
2nd goes to Harry Kewell. Ill tell ya what, he is definetely in the top 10 players in the world at the moment. Absolute freak !

I dunno, but im not to sure if 1-0 is going to be enough to take to Montivideo. Maybe im all hesitant cos of what happened in 97. I dunno, all I know is I went crazy when Crazy Kev put that penalty away.

Im still very nervous but cant wait till Monday morning !

Australia :) :) :) 1 - 0 Uruguay

Take that cocky Alvaro Recoba <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

We just need a draw and we are through, please God say it will be so, please :)

Just under 85,000 tonight at the MCG, just got back about 90 minutes ago. Very happy indeed. Had a beautiful seat to watch the game, behind the goals at the Punt rd. End, 3rd level, saw Muscat's penalty from a great view.

The MCG was something tonight. Probably thought the atmosphere at the Iran match was a bit better, but i have been going to the MCG for over 12 years, and this was one of the best moments on the ground i have ever witnessed.

So much for extra security, granted no one ran onto the pitch and spoilt the game, but we had about 6-7 flares go off, the police said that there would be no flares at all that would go off during the match  . Massive fight on the first level at the Great Southern Stand, probably M2 or M3 seats it was in.

Unfortunately i was sitting in a very much AFL dominated area, a lot of people around me didn't have a clue what was going on. In the major paper today, there was tips to following the match which includes what a corner was, to what a throw-in is and what is meant by a yellow and red card.

As for the game, we played well. It is a credit to the lads, probably didn't like the substitution at half-time of Lazaridis off for Agostino, but in the end we won so that it is all that counts.

As for the individual players.

Mark Schwarzer did his job, nearly was caught out early on in the match from a shot from half-way out from Recoba i think it was.

Craig Moore, i never gave this guy credit, but he is real good player. Is an attacking threat from set pieces, very good defender, hardly put a foot wrong all night.

Shaun Murphy, i thought he done well, a few times i thought he was struggling, but he came through the game alright.

Kevin Muscat, the goal-scorer. Well nice penalty take, went down the middle. Received a yellow card, was always pushing up down the right wing.

Tony Vidmar, didn't really see him push up as Muscat did down the left sided wing.

Brett Emerton, think all this Leeds/Liverpool/Arsenal speculation is hampering his game a bit. Have seen him obviously play for Australia before and have seen some of his Feyenoord matches and he is capable of so much more than what he displayed tonight. Seemed very reluctant to cross. Always battling to take 2,3 players on. Was able to win a few corners for Australia. But a good attacking player.

Harry Kewell, the mere sight of Harry on the ball brought the crowd into the game, everyone was wanting to see what Harry would do. Prefer him on te left-side of midfield with Viduka & Agostino up front. Worked very well tonight, made the hard look simple, was great to watch as he went past defenders. Sometimes his crossing left a bit to be desired.

Paul Okon, captain, he still looks a bit underdone, but with 2 matches under his belt now at top international level, it should help him for Monday morning our time at Montivideo. Very good defensive midfielder.

Josip Skoko, Okon's parnter in the centre of midfield, i wish Australia had a free-kick just outside the box, just to see his free-kick ability. Played very tight, seemed reluctant to take a shot from distance, perfect partner with Okon, really could be a decider for the next match.

Stan Lazaridis, had much of the ball in the first half and was surprised to see that he was taken off at half-time. Took all of Australia's corners, produced a beautiful corner where Moore headed towards goal, that the keeper Carini had to tip over.

Mark Viduka, in all the media was very excited about playing in his home city again, thought he was a bit quiet, definetly showed us though his body strength, was able to turn defenders with ease on occasions.

Paul Agostino, will always be the man remembered as the guy that earned us a penalty.

Uruguay, a bunch of sissy diving wankers. They tried to con the referee on occasions with their acrobatic impersonations, didn't work, only Muscat was booked and that was near the end of the match.

To the referee, thanks mate for calling the penalty, from my vantage point is was obvious, haven't seen a replay yet though.

Thanks to the MCG for showing the adidas commercial non-stop with David Beckham and Harry Kewell.

But what an atmosphere when Muscat scored.

So 1-0, the job is half finished only 90 more minutes to go.

I don't think we will be underestimating the task at hand next Monday morning. The good thing is that Australia will be flying out tomorrow morning to Montivideo whereas Uruguay who had to make the trip down to Melbourne have to wait until Thursday before they can go home.

The good thing from tonight's match was the defence IMO. Craig Moore was outstanding and is also a threat from set pieces. However i do feel we are missing a Paul Scholes type of player. Having said that the partnership in central midfield of Okon and Skoko is very good, both good tacklers and passers of the ball.

Australia was good tonight at keeping possesion. Uruguay are going to come out attacking and pushing as many men forward as they can to score an early goal. I think Australia can score on the counter.

I think you and all of the 85,000 crowd tonight at the MCG went crazy when Muscat scored. We have finally won at the MCG, it is about time to. We need to do well at home in these big matches.

I think channel 7 will be showing the 2nd leg live, well i hope so anyway, they will be crazy not to.

A 1-0 result was good for us, but like you i thought it should have been more. In the 5th minute, Craig Moore probably should have scored.

But i am so happy that we were able to keep a clean sheet.

Agree, MOM honours go to Craig Moore, set the example early on with his header on target, was rock solid at the back, very determined player.

Just worried about the impact the crowd over there will have on the match. If we can play it tight for the first 15-20 minutes, try and take the crowd out of it, we should be alright.

What line-up do you think Frank Farina will choose for Monday morning's match. Will we go more defensive, extra defender? 5-4-1, 4-5-1 or stick with the 4-4-2.

1-0 at home against a jet-lagged Uraguay side, it's never going to be enough. You know what Uraguay are like at home, and you know what their tactics are going to be over there. If you didn't win 3-0 in Australia you were out, and it's a shame because I'd like to see Kewell and Viduka miss more Leeds matches to play in World Cup preparation games, and start next season tired after spending next summer in Japan and Korea like most of the other top players.

Bye bye Aussies, you'll never qualify for a World Cup and after what happened against France no quality oposition is going to come down there and play you. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Seems someone was watching the game yesterday... :D

Amsterdam, 20 November (DS) Feyenoord's Australian midfielder Brett Emerton has played down reports of an imminent move to Leeds, insisting that he is happy to stay at the Rotterdam club.
The 22-year-old who was in action during Australia's 1-0 play-off victory over Uruguay was reported last week to have named the Yorkshire giants as his preferred club with fellow Aussies Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka already at Elland Road. However, the £15million-rated player has denied that he ever said he favours a move to Leeds, saying: "I don't know how those stories are being written. Emerton said, "I am not busy with transfers at all. Since I came here last week I said several times that I really liked it at Feyenoord and that I am having a great season. We are in the hunt for the championship and are in the UEFA Cup. I am more concerned with my own performances than with my future."

The important thing here is that Australia didn't concede any goals! they did very well to keep uruguay out and now the only thing they have to do is shut them out again! Something I'm sure they are more than capable of...

Uruguay still have to score at least two goals against Australia to get through, if the roos have the same result in Mondays game, I really don't think uruguay would be capable of scoring 3 against them! (no, not even at home, and I'm sure the roos are only too aware of Uruguays motives!)

Bloody good for the Oceania region! WEll done roos! :) :)

Uruguay seem set to rush back injured star Dario Silva for Sunday's 2nd leg match in Montividea. Silva scored the first goal in Uruguay's final group stage game vs. Argentina last Wednesday.

Craig Moore was outstanding last night. MOM by a long shot.

Return leg will be a tricky one, and I expect Uruguay will go into all out attack in the early minutes and try and get that goal back as early as possible. Will be a great game, but we've got the upper hand, and we're confident we can get there!

:)

Thanks everyone whose not Australian for your support! We appreciate it!

3-5-2 formation i am backing on for Uruguay with Recoba playing just behind the front two. Report from a Western Australian sports commentator is that the fans in Montevideo have in the past turned on their team if they don't score an early goal. Don't know how true that is, but it adds a bit to the match. I think there stadium can hold around 65,000, but from reports the stands are very close to the pitch.

Just back from Melbourne for the game. The atmosphere was fantastic and that obviously helped Australia. It will be difficult, but not impossible , in Montevideo. Australia have always been good at defending and closing teams down and must now be a good chance of making the finals.

Nice, a sensible response. Australia will be taught a lesson over there and come back with their arses spanked into international obscuraty. Bye bye Aussies.
