John Stead. Scored 8 goals in two seasons for Blackburn in the PL before dropping down into the Championship, League One and League Two. Scored a winner against us.

Liam Rosenior played out of his skin on his Premier League debut for Fulham against us.

Jonathan Spector did similar playing for West Ham against us

That Swedish goalkeeper who went full on Friedel in that Europa League quarter final for FC Copenhagen.

Alfonso Alves - big money flop for Middlesbrough, apart from against us where he channelled the spirit of prime Ronaldo.

Charlie Adam, Townsend, Bellamy...

They aren't bad but their performances against us could be world class on a day.

Arnautovic usually produced a worldie against us for Stoke and more so for West Ham.

I'd argue he did fit in with the way we played, funnily enough more so for LVG and later Jose.

It was like Moyes was embarrassed to use him similarly to how he utilised him at Everton.
Yeah your quite right to be fair, Moyes signing him was bizarre. Some of his performances under Mourinho I thought were brilliant too. He certainly wasn’t a failed transfer, rather he just became a symbol of the wrong direction we were taking in terms of playing style.

Paulo Wanchope. Debuted against us as a complete unknown, and did his best L. Ronaldo impression that day:

In fairness to him he did have a very sporadic knack for the spectacular after that too. From 12 seconds:

aww man! back when Derby County were a good side.

There must have been a player or two for Swansea during that lvg period. They always seemed to do well against us.

Edit we lost 4 in 5 games from January 14 to August 15

Was it ki who always seemed to score?

Edit 2, yes ki scored the first goal in two 2 1 defeats the game raising cnut

Edit 3, he's scored 17 career goals and two came against us in the space of 18 months.

Seemingly half of the players who have ever played in the PL....

Every 1 in 10 CF becomes prolific against us. Every teflon-handed GK becomes a wall. Championship-standard CBs become a pure combination of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

I think it's actually one of the reasons we look worse than we are sometimes. Teams still raise their game against us on name only, and our current lot dont have the star quality or organisation to overcome opponents who are trying that extra 10%

Dennis Bailey - Hat-trick at Old Trafford in 1992
Paulo Wanchope - Couple of good solo goals at OT in 1997 & 2000
Chris Kiwomya - Goal and win at Portman Road 1993

Also Gavin Peacock scored a couple of winners against us for Chelsea in the 1993/94 season

Peacock hit the crossbar in the FA Cup final too at 0-0. Really could have doused us that season. Good shout.

Relatively unknown Lodi managed a cracking game against us as we were sent crashing out of the CL. I’m pretty sure we’ll never hear of him again. This has got me thinking - it seems to be quite a regular occurrence.

You have the likes of Brad Friedel who was an average keeper but would turn into an immovable object regularly against us, but you also have the players that just have the one-off game only to be never heard of or seen again. This thread is regarding the latter.

Michael Mifsud - scored two goals against us for Coventry and has never been seen again.

Choupo Moting - see above. I didn’t even realise he was in professional football until I saw his name on the subs bench for PSG.

Any others?
What a blast from the past

I watched almost all of Coventry's homes during the period Mifsud was there.

Can we add Jay Rodriguez into the mix as well? Absolute nothing player but always manages to break his goalscoring duck against us. Prick.

Malcolm Christie for Derby County. Scored twice against us in a game, thought he had scored a hat trick but was offside. Did some daft celebration which made him look like a tit when the flag went up. Think he went to Boro after that but never did anything.

The latter half of the 2018/19 season produced two such ignominious moments of this ilk.

First up, Isaac Mbenza scored his one and only goal for Huddersfield Town that season against us. Since the end of that season, he has made a total of 19 appearances for Huddersfield, Amiens SC, and Qatar Sports Club.

Later on, to finish off the season, we had Nathaniel Mendez-Laing doubling his Premier League goal haul at Old Trafford when he scored both goals in a 2-0 victory for the already relegated Cardiff City. Mendez-Laing went on to have his Cardiff contract terminated after receiving a three month ban for cocaine usage, and has since made a total of 21 appearances for Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.

You might say these were two of the larger warning signs that we had been a bit hasty in offering Solskjaer the permanent job as United manager...

Excellent shout.

A bog-standard relegation-battling PL / upper Championship player with 43 Premier League goals to his name over a decade ... and we are his second-favourite opponents with 4 goals, behind only Bournemouth.
