Yeah your quite right to be fair, Moyes signing him was bizarre. Some of his performances under Mourinho I thought were brilliant too. He certainly wasn’t a failed transfer, rather he just became a symbol of the wrong direction we were taking in terms of playing style.

Every 1 in 10 CF becomes prolific against us. Every teflon-handed GK becomes a wall. Championship-standard CBs become a pure combination of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
I think it's actually one of the reasons we look worse than we are sometimes. Teams still raise their game against us on name only, and our current lot dont have the star quality or organisation to overcome opponents who are trying that extra 10%

Mendez-Laing went on to have his Cardiff contract terminated after receiving a three month ban for cocaine usage, and has since made a total of 21 appearances for Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.
