Unfortunate match up for Gio/Theon as Jim was strong where they were weakest (their right wing). There wasn't that much outright criticism of Rijkaard/Matthaus as a pairing but it certainly didn't seem to get the love you'd expect. I voted for them but looking at it now there's something about Zidane that seems slightly out of place that I can't even put my finger on.
I kept banging about Gamarra there against Cruyff and Hristo. Also, that they wouldn't have midfield advantage as it first seem because of Cruyff droping deep and Vasovic stepping in the midfield.
But, there wasn't any criticism of Lothar/Rijkaard that I can remember. Also, when they paired them I remember most people reacting how we even allowed it to happen.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that pairing imo, quite the opposite. I wouldn't won that match if it wasn't for right back position and what was really suprising (and probably deserve more talk) if people saw Zidane as any kind of influence in the game which happens to him all the time lately.
Rijkaard/Lothar is more than fine. In fact, it is one of midfield pairing I would like to avoid in any match despite that outcome.
