Lazio know it will not be easy to tempt Owen

Lazio want Owen
Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti is reported to be lining up a £40m bid for Liverpool striker Michael Owen. Owen scored the Red's goal in their 3-1 defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday to take his tally for the season 18 goals.

Cragnotti is desperate to sign the England striker but knows it will be difficult to tempt Owen from Anfield.

The in-form striker recently signed a new deal that commits him to Liverpool until 2005.

"It won't be easy to rip him away from Liverpool but we are going to try," said Cragnotti.

"I want Owen. He is a player I would have liked to have had at Lazio for some time now.

"Owen has the talent of an absolute champion. I think he deserves the European Player of the Year award." <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Cragnotti hopes to finance a spending spree by selling 20% of the club's shares. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

"I am looking for a partner, not because I am selling the club but because I want someone who will take 20% and have the same ambition as me."

But Liverpool insist they have no intention of selling the striker.

Spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Michael has only recently signed a new contract and is not for sale.

"He is going nowhere." <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />
