Most players get only 2 or 3 chances to win in their careers and the odds are stacked against you however good your country is due to the knockout nature of the format.

Your XI is very good on its own. Džajić is the only truly necessary inclusion, you just can’t not have him — 2 times in the Team of the tournament and probably the best player of the 1968 tournament (Beckenbauer, I think, argued that he should’ve gotten Ballon d’Or that year over peak George Best no less!). Brehme also has 2 TotT inclusions and van Moer has arguably the greatest comeback story in history of the tournament (although you can easily switch him with better overall players like Matthäus or Ballack).

Buffon
Brehme - Cannavaro - Nesta - Maldini
Poborsky - Pirlo - van Moer - Džajić
Shearer - Griezmann

Too many.

Greatest player to never even play a single EC game? Nemanja Vidic, probably.

Not too sure about Maldini if its based on performances at the actual tournament. He was good in the group stage at '88 but imo one of the worst players in the quarter final loss against ussr, didn't play well at '96 until Italy were almost out and his '00 was a solid aging-veteran fullback tournament, but one where i thought he struggled to cover the same ground as earlier tournaments and had some ordinary games, especially in the knockout games. I think his best international tournaments were world cups...great at Italia '90, USA '94 after the group stages, plus a good tournament in France too. Euro 2000 hd seemed slightly too late for him physically.

Right! He barely played so it slipped my mind, but he did get the medal.
No wonder... I think for the national team he is remembered mostly for the World Cup win 1990 and for the disaster of the EURO 2000.
