Calum Chambers

Really feel for Southampton but that offer is way too good to refuse. Crazy fee.

Jesus they'll have to bring Le Tiss out of retirement at this rate.

Hmm I dunno, considering what Shaw went for I reckon they could've got more for him if they held on to him a year or so. Granted he's young but he's their first choice right back and I'd expect him to be Arsenal's too come the end of the season.

He will get more games than debuchy I'm
Cracking young player
Nah, I don't think so. Think he will be more of a squad player and for the future, replacing Jenkinson and can also cover at CB (Vermaelen replacement?).

Wasn't he actually playing for some non-league side last season?

Signed and played a game for Guernsey because they had to play 17 fixtures in a month due to postponements or some shite.

I see what you're saying but with their conveyor belt of talent and the key players already leaving this window a bit of extra cash at this moment for a player who could go both ways (although he does look like he'll go to the top, as does Shaw), to reinvest and keep their side in the top half isn't to be sniffed at. I guess it will come down to them reinvesting wisely - I think Tadic will be, don't think Pelle is.

I feel bad for Bellerin.

Yeah, he looks like a neat player, but I think Wenger probably sees something really good in Chambers to get him. Plus, does this mean Wenger doens't rate Jenko as highly as I do? Who knows?

I am trying to remember if I have ever experienced a worse exodus during my time as a football-fan - but I can't think of one.

Possibly some relegated team might have experienced something similar - but nothing really springs to mind

Same.

Reckon they'll lose Schneiderlin too.

I see a relegation battle on the cards.

Should we have been in for him? As a back up for Rafael? Rafael himself is not doing so well.

I am sure he will be a great buy for Arsenal. They always make such English buys who cost 12 mil or so but urn out to be very good players.

Hadn't really heard of him til today, but he's a Southampton youth player so must be good.
That centre forward Gallacher will go next if he ever manages a shot on target.

It's not very good for the competitiveness of the league when you get a team who improve to finish 8th and then lose their manager and 5/6 players.

I hope he gets regular games. England could really do with a decent right back. With Shaw (19), Stones (20) and now Chambers (19) we've got some good young defensive prospect coming through.

I agree. You constantly see United fans on here have a go at City and Chelsea for the way they go about things but whatever other way is there to get to the top ? Southampton went about it in the 'purest' way in most fans eyes and look where that has got them.

I said last season that he impressed me more than Nathaniel Clyne who he was keeping out of the team. Quite solid defensively and can put in a decent cross.

£16 million sounds way too much for him, unlike Shaw he looks like the normal "Good young English player" and doesn't have anywhere near as much experience or proven himself over 2 seasons. So I would have expected the fee to be about half of that.

However, with the fee they got for Shaw and with them losing so many players its no surprise that Southampton would insist on such a large fee. Its just hard to see why Arsenal would feel the need to pay it when they have already signed Debuchy. I'm sure Chambers would be a good signing longterm but is there really such a pressing need that they'd overpay like that?

+ Jones and Flanagan

That's a topic for another thread but i can see that.....Shaw - Stones - Jones - Flanagan/Chambers will be the defence for the Euros 2016

Really? Gary Cahill will have dropped off within two years? Not forgetting Smalling, who is still vastly superior to Jones at centre half.

Cahill and Smalling on the bench ;)

For me Jones and Stones are the future......Cahill wasn't good at the World Cup and i reckon he'll a bench player at Chelsea next season

What a difference one season can make for a club in their position. Their supporters must be gutted.

I really feel for them because they did it the "right way". Their problem will always be that bigger clubs will poach their talented youngsters. They arguably have the best youth setup in the league.

I could be mistaken but was a regular for Southampton last season? I thought he was back up to Shaw for some reason.

Tbh I thought Cahill was alright and made to look worse by the other 3 defenders with him being abysmal - though it's only this past season I've thought of him as anything other than bang average.

I agree with you about Stones, he's looked absolutely fantastic so far and if he continues his development next season he will definitely cement his place in the England squad. Jones worries me a little though, I really like him and want him to do well but I just don't trust him at centre half... But I can see him being the biggest beneficiary of our new system, his defensive indiscipline won't matter so much with 2 others to cover him at any one time.

Back up to Clyne, got in the team when Clyne was injured but was out of the team again towards the end of the season.

Strange signing for Arsenal considering they juts signed Debuchy and have Jenkinson also. He's a very good player, but Southampton won't miss him as much as the others they've sold, since they have Clyne to come in and take his place, who is also a great talent. Possibly losing 3/4 of your back line and half out your starting eleven is a big problem for them and I can really see them struggle next season.

Worth about £15m so about right from Arsenal. Looks a talented prospect and I'm betting he'll displace Debuchy by next year. I actually rate Chambers more as Debuchy really isn't that good.

I feel sorry for them yes - but in all fairness they could turn down these offers.

Agreed think if Arsene uses him right then yes.

For me Arsene takes time to bed in new signings that are young, like Walcott when he first signed took a while to break in etc. Chambers may be required sooner though if Debuchy doesnt work out. I think Debuchy is solid but nothing more than that, Chambers could be a top RB if his talent progresses, (although obviously not an Arsenal fan) hope he gets games so he can grow, rather than not being used.

How good is he? have never seen him play.
Surely be loaned back to Southampton, unless he was bought to play as CB, why spend 12 on Debuchy as well. It would have been cheaper to stump up the cash Sagna wanted.

I think Debuchy is a short-term signing and Chambers more like long-term with the prospect of being converted into CB.Bellerin will replace Debuchy after a few seasons.

Good addition. I can sense the logic in it, as he's a player who can cover any position across the back four and he's obviously a player with a lot of potential. Additionally, Vermaelen's future at the club isn't secure and Monreal has come off a poor season so he should still get plenty of game-time and develop accordingly.
