I just wonder if we are looking at a defensively minded RB because we want to better protect our existing CB's

Ake never impressed me. He tends to make mistakes, remind me of David Luiz.

Not sure why lot of people rate him that we should sign him.

Maguire & Diop are the only good options we can get. The rest are unrealistic, not the right one & some never watch him so not sure whether we should sign them.

If we don't have that much money, Kabak would be a good option after Stuttgart being relegated. Not really sure how the hell Stuttgart got relegated with the players they had, but hey ho! 19M or something, only 19. If you believe it as well, we were supposed to have spoken to Gala about him when he was there.

As soon as we approach his club, the price goes up to 60m minimum.
I'd pay that for him tbh, instead of getting fleeced for Maguire. Tah has all of Maguires strengths and is very very quick unlike the Leicester CB.

To be fair, I haven't seen much of him so I can't comment on how good Tah is.

My main point was that clubs start pulling random high figures out from their arses as soon as we want their players.

Toby Alderweireld is a no brainer for me. He could have another good 4/5 seasons left in him. And he is head and shoulders better than anything we currently have. A top 3 PL defender and his buy out clause is an absolute steal at 25 million. Just go and get him and stop messing about with these 90m tree stumps.

I agree, it seems we have to pay a premium compared to other clubs.

But having said that, i'd overpay for Tah. He's the closest in style to VVD i've seen from the CBs i've seen.

I am tending to agree with this. It just makes sense. We need a top draw CB. There aren't many currently on the market that are available at a decent price. Even if it is just 2 - 3 seasons dude, it would help and see what else crops up for a more long term approach.

Surely we could sign one of Upamecano or Konaté? I'd be delighted with either

I'd be surprised if Alderweireld wants his release clause triggered.
If he hangs in at spurs for one more season he will be a free agent and can pocket a multi million pound signing in fee..

Ball playing wise and not crazy expensive Joachim Andersen, Saliba but he may be too young to be thrust into the first team constantly.

Another one is Dakonam of Getafe, he's on the short side though, looks defensively as good as blind but with the added bonus of being very good in the air, no push over and has good pace as well.

I personally think we need to get rid of a few CB's but instead of bringing in 1 I think we need 2.
Alderweireld- No brainer 25m
Maguire or Diop ,will have to spend big but PL proven is what we should be looking for not taking 30m risks if there going to be good enough in PL or no .

Buying 1 CB isn't going to sort our defence out.

We need a good DEFENSIVE RB.
AWB-seems the candidate but haven't seen too much of him.
Aarons- in his highlights he dosent even look good I would rather keep Dilot or Mensah.

If we get a good RB then we will need a good RW instead of playing Mata or Lingaard in that position I'm not sure if Ole is expecting to make that position James or no .
What good RW is out there for us realistically?

For me, Tah (23, Leverkusen) is even more talented than Süle (23, Bayern). Tah had a crunch in his performances, but recovered under Bosz. Other defenders i liked to watch this season are Ibrahima Konaté (20, RB Leipzig) and Dan-Axel Zagadou (20, Dortmund).

He’ll be 31 next summer. I can’t see many teams being willing to pay him huge amounts.

He's running down his contract apparently.

I could be wrong but I m getting the impression that Diop is the real target. Maguire seems to prefer City, Toby prefers to remain at Spurs while DeLigt is difficult.
For roughly the same by price I think club prefers Diop to Diaz.
Unless there s a surprise waiting for us...
One of Jones or Bailly must leave for sure..irrelevant of how people rate them, they re both too injury prone.

I'd take this with a grain of salt, but Bild reported today that United had made an offer for Hummels, before he joined Dortmund.

All man-mountains with very good technical ability - exactly what United should be looking for in my view. Andersen at Sampdoria has a similar mix of physical/technical attributes and should also be under consideration.

Forget spending £80m+ on Maguire.

That would have been perfectly ok by me. Still a solid defender.

He's taking a gamble, Spurs looked to be phasing him out slightly last season and I can see it happening even more this season as they will probably think ahead and get another defender in this season to get them settled into the league/team to be 100% adapted for the following season when Alderweireld leaves.

I would go for alderweireld now since de ligt seems impossible and Maguire fee is just absurd. Aim to Improve next summer if somebody emerges or catches our eye and let tuanzebe have a chance in some games to see what he can do. Rushing into a signing we might regret would be foolish. Alderweireld wages may be crazy but a 2 plus 1 or a 3 year deal would be ok given a low fee. Getting proven quality and definite improvement in meantime

He is still a good defender and would be our best CB at building up from the back. His weakness in the air makes him a less-than-ideal partner for Lindelof, though (assuming that's what we're looking for).

Id go for Diop of West Ham based on pure gut feeling.

My spidey sense says that if we don’t get him, someone else will next season and we’ll regret it badly.

Although I don’t doubt West Ham will demand £60m upwards

Many clubs are willing to pay £25m to Spurs. As a free agent, he will find a club willing to sign him direct for £10m.

I think that with the £60, £70 and £80m prices tags being quoted, together with our current status, maybe it is sensible to sign Alderweireld for next season, push for champions League, then reassess next season for a long term solution.
I just don't want to see us splurging £10s of millions on yet another squad standard CB.

Along with buying a defender, would Cahill be an awful extra signing on a free? I feel like the defence and team in general is lacking a player like him that has experience of successfully playing at the top, model professional, has leadership qualities, good on the ball, a goal threat from corners, someone that is Vocal and a Organizer.

I can remember Fergie doing something similar with bringing Blanc in to the team for his experience and to be honest I would prefer Cahill over most of our current central defenders.

This is a great shout, i always figured Mourinho would try to bring him in even last season. He’s got the right mentality to bring others on.

We need 2 new centre backs and to clear out Jones Rojo and Bailly. Woildnt go near Maguire for 80m. That Is absolutely crazy..no way is he worth that. One experienced centre back and then a young talent to go along with them

Hello Carlow, and Welcome. I think Milenkovic and Lindelof would compliment each other and would make a great pairing for years.
