As a fellow member of the LGBTQ community, I can’t tell you how great it feels to read something like this. I really hope more will follow his example.
Not the first - but good for him for coming out.
Yeah, sorry for that. Was so happy when a mate told me, I didn’t bother to check. Only mods can change the title, right? Not the first - but good for him for coming out.

As he is already the second player to come out, how where the reactions when Robbie Rogers came out?
Nah, he moved to the MLS and played for LA Galaxy after coming out.So Robbie Rogers retired when he came out. Which means this bloke is a first.

As soon as I saw the thread title I was going to say that I await the first "I don't care" post. Yet I see I've already missed someone saying the same thing, someone making that inevitable post and someone following it up with a comment about how inevitable it was, all within the first fifteen responses. The caf sure is fast these days.
When Hitzlsperger came out and got a job on television, the reactions were very positive, from what I remember. I was quite happy, too. Representation matters. What do you think the reaction will be in the LGBTQ community if he gets a job in the media within the next year? Will he face any backlash or will they generally just be pleased a sportsman came out?

I don’t think anyone in the community would mind. Outside of it obviously enough. But there would be no cynicism when Hitzlsperger and Rogers came out. They were international footballers and had had decent careers. I don't think anyone has heard of this guy and looking at his career stats, it's not as if he's likely to have a bright future in the game. He's apparently been out for a long time in his normal life.
This will be a great career move for him.
Inb4 all the conservatives/right-wingers who want him to shut up about it.

Not great but a few have since been banned.

Guess quite a bit of players don't want to be known just as "the gay one" (besides the other obvious reasons), because if you announce it at this point this will be your label. It's like when loads of people (a sizeable portion on this forum too) were convinced that Smalling or Mata were gay, because of their voice or the way they dress. Some people just have a hard time wrapping their heads around the fact that someone just happens to be gay rather than this being his one and only defining trait. What's also great to see from that Twitter thread, how other MLS clubs and players like Altidore etc, greet the announcement.
Sad part, though, reading this line on his wiki page: "...became the only active male professional soccer player to be openly gay". Not that it's anything new, still baffling.

WhatSo coming out means admitting to going in?

Reliably awful. My view is that homosexuality will be accepted, but never be regarded as completely normal.
Since it isn't.
