This might already be an exhaustive list, but feel free to add things which modern football fans seem obsessed with which are basically irrelevant:
  • Squad numbers
  • Club captains
  • Press conferences (including getting angry at managers for not saying their own players are shit)
  • "Deadwood"

This one is particularly bizarre - and you actually see it all the time.

Regardless of whether the manager actually rates a player or desperately wants him gone, it obviously makes no sense to publicly declare that you don't really fancy him - it should be pretty feckin'...obvious.

Somehow thinking that they have a strong understanding of how much each member of the coaching staff contribute and which individual coaches are holding us back.

Being more interested in the GOAT debate and other childish feuds than actually watching and understanding football as a team sport.

Fan channels - esp obsessively hate-watching them and moaning about them

I don’t think this is exclusive to modern fans, at least at United, the number 7 has held significance for as long as I remember.

Promoting teenagers over seasoned pros, instead of allowing the young kids earn their way and develop properly.
The fetishisation of youth and ‘potential’

Going on about one player having a ‘higher ceiling’ than another as if this is FM and players have a potential ability rating out of 200.

Extremely specific transfer outs, where the fee to the exact figure and the club the player will be sold to are specified.

Obsessing over transfer sagas of players more than actual football. Getting super hyped over potential transfers, then the moment they sign getting instantly bored of them and demanding more signings, or complaining that a long transfer saga had ruined their excitement of a player playing for the club

Pretty much. Potential is great, but you still need to learn and experience the necessary steps. And thinking you can just feck off half an entire senior squad and replace them is the rare, rare exception in the top leagues.

Tactical setup (e.g. 4231 v 433) without knowledge of functionality (i.e. how a unit works together for the greater good of the team).

Prime example is just Pogba in central midfield thinking a Kante next to him would solve everything. The sheer ignorance is mind numbing.

In the knows or ITKs on twitter, when they are all just random twitter accounts. Even the more "official" people who claim to have "sources" are really just guessing based on hearsay and rumours.

Defining players by shirt numbers: e.g. no. 10 or no. 6.
Hardly a modern thing, is it? As far as I'm aware numbers were originally used to indicate position, so the association with types of players must have started a long time ago.

My wit's end

There have been genuine posts in the last few years saying that if we sold Rooney or Valencia or Lingard, United would magically become a better team.

No we wouldn't. Whenever the manager picked those players, it was because they were his best option. Removing that option doesn't improve us. It just forces the manager to pick a player he doesn't fancy as much in his specific tactical setup.

And if those players were sat on the bench in the first place, the idea of them being deadwood makes even less sense. It's just an easy way to turn uncool players into scapegoats.

I get the financial arguments. But that only comes after you can find a superior alternative.

That's exactly my point. Shirt numbers mean different things among different eras and different cultures.

Why not just refer to a player by the role they play rather than the number they wear?

Pace and age. Anyone who doesn’t have burning pace is automatically shit. Anyone over 28 might as well retire.

Insider sources say Sony will telecast Ligue 1 and Bundesliga in India this season.

Sources also say Serie A might leave the Sony umbrella and might be telecasted on EuroSport or FanCode

The above was shared in a whatsapp group today. Telecast rights info is being shared like it's a feckin secret.
