Looks like Liverpool are close to signing him, all their reliable sources reported same news.

Interesting that everybody admires this guy so much, but nobody is willing to pay what benfica want for him.. I’m starting to think clubs have shown interest, and then been put off when hearing the price. I can’t see Klopp blowing his entire budget on this guy, he still needs a lot of work, and if he’s failing to control balls into him in the Portuguese league, what happens when he’s under constant pressure in the prem? .. I dunno, it could be another Werner waiting to happen

Dominic King is a reliable reporter for the Merseyside clubs.

But he's a Uruguayan Andy Carroll, has no technique, can't control the ball blah blah

Klopp seems pretty keen, what does he know :wenger: Guess that leaves us with Teemo Pukki.
To be fair Liverpool signed the actual English Andy Carroll for an eye watering amount so you know, no guarantee of quality or success in the PL.

A few days ago Mitten effectively said although there was some interest from United, nothing was advanced and a lot of the talk came from the agent.

Would imagine a lot of our reported interest has been to speed up Liverpool

I'm starting to twitch a bit at United's inactivity though. Like when someone is 20 minutes late home, it's not time to panic and call the police yet, but you start to wonder

Personally have not seen us spending £85m on a back up striker. So much surgery required in the squad that spending that kind of money on a player who is unlikely to start would be mad.

The real question is, we need a striker, with him going to Liverpool - who is actually left

The striker market is like a ghost town. I'd be very tempted to take a punt on someone like Amine Gouiri, then revisit this again next year.
Wikipedia says he once knocked in a couple against New Caledonia U17s. Sign him up.

He will say Ronaldo, you will say he can play off the left + rotate with Ronnie
No, I’d say he can play up top and Ronaldo can warm the bench. Or if we really insist on playing him Ronaldo can play left. Rangnick already said Ronaldo doesn’t like playing striker.

True and a great analogy to finish.

You know Cristiano Ronaldo, paid £500k a week. Doesn’t like sitting on the bench. Arguably still one of the best strikers in the world. The face of commercial United. If he’s fit he starts.
He’s also 37 years old, has had a season with longer goal droughts than he’s had at any point since he became a top player and doesn’t even like playing striker according to Rangnick. If we’re prepared to pay big money for a striker it’ll be because he’s starting.

He hasn't ever really been a lone striker though

"Ronaldo can warm the bench"

"if we really assist on playing him"

the inflammatory language as if United are doing Ronaldo a favour

you make it seem like Ronaldo is in Rashford or Maguire form and had 100 chances already.. Ronaldo just won our player of the season in his 1st season back and you want to bench him at the start of the season. Madman! I'm all for healthy competition but Ronaldo because of what he did last season and the goals he scored deserves to start the season for Manchester United at 37 years old or not. Age is just a number for GOAT sportsman like Ronaldo they defy age. Michael Jordan thought he could play until he was 50 years old.

he's doing United a favour by staying when United are in the Europa League

if you think Darwin Nunez and his Lukaku-Esque trampoline touch is keeping statistically the greatest goal-scorer of all-time and a GOAT of the game out the team you are sadly mistaken.. Ten Hag isn't stupid he knows his onions and where his bread is buttered... But time will prove me or you right!

what United need is a young striker who costs around £30-£40M who can play second fiddle to Ronaldo next season.

I don't think United are even in for Nunez I think it's just agent talk. But time will tell.

Except for when he did for the entirety of last season and with Juventus. Do you guys even watch United? Ronaldo hasn’t played wide for years and can barely dribble with the balls these days. He’s a poacher and spares his energy for runs into the box. Even at Madrid Benzema was the player that dropped deeper to allow Ronaldo the space, hence why Benzema had low goal scoring stats competed to now. To suggest he’s had a striking partner isn’t true.

Plus ETH is not going to play with two strikers, no top club or manager does these days.

It's sensible to walk away if Liverpool are prepared to break their transfer record to sign him.

We will most likely go for Richarlison
I'm increasingly thinking this too. And he'll end up costing similar to Nuñez.

Nuñez has a much higher potential than Richarlison, but I do think Richarlison's flexibility and premier league experience will mean he can slot in and contribute straight away. He's been a 1 goal every 3 games player but in the right team I think he's got 20 goals a season in him.

£85m ? No thanks. Good striker but not a game changer. Would be fine if we got Richarlison for 40-50m, not a pure striker but can play there easily and I’m sure would get good numbers.

If he came here, I'm sure he'd end up looking best playing off the left. His game is all about being direct in those spaces where everybody else already wants to play.

For Liverpool, depending on the fee they get for Mane, he makes way more sense. He can replace Mane next season and past that compensate for the goals they'll lose when Salah goes.

Why dont we go for Nkunku?
Because Leipzig also want £80m+

We've just bought a kid that was even better than Nkunku over the last 2/3 years in the Bundesliga and he's struggled.

Maybe we are a bit cautious to sign somebody who isn't even actually a striker to play as one.

Liverpool let Origi go and it seems he had better technique than this bloke!
Klopp must be losing it.
