I initially thought this deal would probably get done for around 50m. I can't believe the figures being quoted for the player, and I believe it's the correct decision to not get involved in the bidding at the quoted fee.

It's a fee that Liverpool are in a position to risk.

He's probably going to be a top player but United's needs right now are to fix the fundamentals, priced at that we would just end up with holes in the squad again.

Wow. For that price I’m glad he’s someone’s else’s problem, he needs a ton of work to get up to premier league standard, I think Liverpool fans are in for a bit of a shock once they see him trying to control balls into his feet under pressure,
if this is Liverpools answer to Haaland, I think it’s fair to assume city have won that particular battle

Maybe this will come back to haunt me. But from what I have seen of him thus far, the price seems absurd. I think tactically he makes sense for Liverpool, but I really have questions over his ability. Guess it's not our problem though.

Agreed.

He's a risk worth taking for Liverpool at the quoted fee, but doesn't make sense for us in our current predicament.

Could you give an example of a realistic transfer target we could've bought that would have seen us win that battle? :p

One game shows they’re not a possession team? They dominate possession in 95% of games they play. And they won that game due to a dodgy penalty in the first minute, hardly a great advert for them.
You still don’t get it. The point I showed you that one game to show you that Klopp‘s system can still work without winning more possession. There is a reason why people call Klopp and Pep play different style, otherwise if it’s possession based team, both would have been considered playing the same style.

60m up front is what I’ve read, and they’ll recoup 40 of that straight away from Mane. Not the biggest risk in the world, but unless he’s a massive success it’s hard not to think they’ll be weaker.

Amazing how Klopp has challenged City given he’s only been able to spend €100m on Nunez, €45-60m on Diaz and €40m on Konate in the last 12 months. How does he do it? Jenius.

 yeah he’s played against them already at anfield and scored. I think they know what they’re getting.

Normally we're drooling over a player and then when he goes elsewhere we pretend we never wanted him and find faults. This time everyone had declared him a donkey and now he’s going elsewhere we’re a disgrace for missing out on such a top talent etc.

I’m impressed how much of an importance this 20-30-40m of a difference in expected and final price has for some posters here. As if he was a great buy for 60m but already a giant risk at 80+20. These 30-40 million of difference is not that much in today's game for big clubs, we lose money like this left right and center by letting players go for free. LFC seem to have identified the target and Klopp is willing to overpay for the one player he wants - I see nothing really wrong with this and I don’t think the price tag will be as important of a factor in whether Darwin is a success in Liverpool, should he end up there

Coutinho giveth and Barca giveth more.

For City replace those names with Abu Dhabi government.

Whether it can work without possession doesn’t matter. They dominate possession in nearly every game they play and that’s the team Nunez is joining. Unless you think they’re going to be completely different next season and start playing on the counter.

If you look at the Mane threads from 2015 when it looked like you might be signing, they were full of moans about him not being good enough:

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/southampton-forward-sadio-mane.408256/

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. A couple who'd rather sign Berahino. Only one poster, @Celestiale, who actually dared suggest that he was better than Pedro.
That’s not what I’m referring to.

They are nowhere near the same type of player and just because Mane became a world class player doesn’t mean anything.

This just shows how we are always left behind. It took us 2 months to get this far with Darwin. It took Liverpool 2 days to agree with player and with the club. Ee are so far behind. Again new manager has to settle

So the point still stands that Nunez joins Liverpool doesn’t change their style of play but he suits Klopp style of play, their system will still work with Nunez in their team. So I don’t know what you are arguing about Nunez to Liverpool here.

What? You said he would suit Liverpool more than a possession based team. He’s joining a team that dominates possession. I’m not sure what you’re getting at. Yes, they can make it work without dominating possession, but they’re not going to change that. He’s still joining a team that’s going to have 60% of the ball.

Both he and Haaland are strikers that dont, on the surface, seem to suit their new managers style of play. Id be surprised if both are a success

He will hate greedy Salah. It will be interesting to see how Klopp evolves the style. Playing with a more traditional centre-forward.

I don't know why this bothers me so much.

I've literally never seen him play or have any idea if he's any good.

Probably just because it's another reminder that other clubs are getting shit done while United sit on their hands and hum watching the walls fall down.

Can't wait for him to hand Shaw, Maguire, AWB their arses and then garnish them with his own awards.

I mean you could do that with someone from the youth teams, so not sure why you spending so much for that...

We have not signed anyone above £40m since the summer of 2018 when we bought Alisson and Keita. That's four years ago. In that same timeframe, City has gone over £60m for Cancelo, Diaz and Grealish alone.

The crazy fees for Alisson, Keita, Van Dijk, ... were just Coutinho money we re-invested. Since then we have been quite modest with our transfer fees, let's not pretend like €40m is anything spectacular in these times, that's almost what Everton throws away for average players each season (Sigurdsson £45m, Richarlison £40m, Iwobi £34m, Godfrey (who?) £25m, ...)

Who is SS?

It's a bit of a weird one with Jota and what we're asking from the centre forward now.

Formerly, we had Firmino in the centre doing all sorts of klopp-critical stuff that justified him not scoring that many goals.

Then Jota displaces him by scoring goals, making runs and being a threat in the box but doing very little of the work on and off the ball that Firmino would get through.
And now we're at a point where Jota doesn't really have the allround game to play wide for us and we stick him in the centre to at least get on the end of things.

Honestly reckon Jota will either get found out or stick around as a Javier Hernández type of player. He doesn't have enough about him outside of goals to justify a starting place.
 Sorry. Support Striker. I was trying to be one of the cool kids.

Yeah I know, that’s why I linked him to Bruno. He’s good making runs and popping up with goals mainly because defenders don’t know how to mark him. Which is why I think he can play the support striker role but as you already pointed out you are losing a player when it comes to the off the ball jobs.

I tried to tell you this like 3x before that Liverpool win possession because they have the defense and midfield to do that, while their forward are more direct. They are not purely possession team like man city where they needed their defense, midfield, and also their forwards to be good at possession. This is why Nunez suits Klopp style because the base principal of gegenpressing is not having more possession or total football like Pep. You still don’t get it? Let me show you city and Liverpool attackers’ passing accuracy % so you can understand. The stats show that Klopp never expect/demand his forwards to be good at possession.

To be fair, it does show though. One league title for you guys in that time frame and three for them.

Well yeah of course, but some people make it up like €40m is a lot nowadays while in a lot of cases it's actually the bare minimum to attract a talented player, let alone an established one.

Transfer fees only don't tell the whole tale either. Should Nunez join us, he would earn a third of what Haaland is earning at City per week.

Why are you Liverpool fans ashamed of your spending? It is always some excuses. But but net spend, but but City, but but United, but but salary...
You spend big. So what? Accepted it and enjoy in new players ffs. You are worse than Pep regarding this
