Pickford went of the line today a little, Ospina too. Both Schmeichel and Subašić had done it on Sunday. I thought rules are keeper can't leave the line at all. Best part is we were slating DDG for staying on the line but he's the only one who stuck to the rules. :D :D

Dunno why, but Im really happy England went through.

Hendo is a joke though, with his unfazed tough guy act before the pen.
All Liverpool scum seem to want to be fake tough guys from what I've seen.

When he stepped up I was certain he would be the one to bottle it.

Think some of the post match praise for England is going too far. Not the shoot out, but the match itself. Yes, England were better but not massively so. England don't need to he afraid of Sweden but I don't think they'll be afraid of England either. England can't afford as many passengers - Stirling, Dele.
Still, I'm happy for England and glad they got the penalty shoot out monkey off their back.

The referee was talking to De Gea throughout, rest of the keepers were left to their own devices.

This is my first World Cup on the site and I'm really surprised by the vociferous support for England on here when you consider the reputation United fans have when it comes to the national team. And Liverpool fans, really. Support seems much more fervent on here than it does for any United game.

Feck all wrong with that, obviously. But just a little surprising.
I honestly don’t know who these Republik of Mancunia lot are. You never meet them round Manchester anyway. Maybe there are some hardcore odd balls in the Stratford end or something. I know one Scouser who doesn’t follow England but that’s it.

Indeed. I really thought Colombia ruined the spirit of this cup with that performance today so glad to see them go home and we can enjoy the quarter finals. They were disgraceful. I love seeing teams like this go out on the cruelty of penalties.
No different to Argentina, it’s a South America thing, doesn’t meld well with VAR though.

Moved to the UK an year back and for some strange reason I have become so attached to this team. Maybe because I have never had India in the world cup but I was about to puke before the shootout. Can't remember a recent united game I have been that nervous in

It would be strange to see Sir Southgate coming up against just Pep. Of course the Queen cannot knight Pep or Federer you have to be English for that.
The King of Spain could always knight Pep... granted, he most likely won’t because of Pep’s support of Catalonian independence.

If you can't beat them join them.
Just found funny if it was Neymar, Pepe or Suarez doing the same things, but hey they broke the psichological bareer, will not be surprised if they reach the final now.

I find it funny that some people are sympathizing with Colombia. I'm American, and didn't care who won really. A few of my friends were over to watch the match who aren't football fans but were intrigued because of the event. They were appalled by the Colombians and how they played the match, and to be fair so was I. How they didn't see red all match is beyond me. They dive all over the place and spend minute after minute hounding the poor ref mercilessly. People wonder why Americans generally don't care for the game but when you see a team like Colombia play it's a miracle that anyone watches this sport at all.

Sorry, picked yours out of a group of many, but don't understand why so many on this forum are so down on Rashford.

He may or may not be a great player, but why not at least get behind the guy until it all becomes clear.
Whoa, you completely misinterpreted my post. Rashford took a fine penalty for one who never takes them, almost like a specialist. Under pressure as well. I was surprised.

For me it's the opposite somehow. I had always been quite attached to the England national team. Players like Lampard, Cole or Ferdinand. This current England team has no names, there are no characters. Kane is an absolute world class striker but he has zero charisma. Now I realise that this is not important and the current side may have the togetherness previous ones were lacking but I just feel nothing. England at the moment are just another random European team like Sweden for me. I actually found myself rooting for Columbia at the end despite their behaviour today. I am also not someone who really gets excited over youngsters, I'd rather see seasoned professionals, particularly at the World Cup.

Yes I don't even know what to say now, since we have been knocked out I try to watch the games with some impartiality the only team who looked to me with the autorithy of a Champion was Brazil on the second half vs Mexico.

I think Croatia is much better under normal circunstances vs Russia but they play at home, always dangerous. Same thing for England, more individual quality than Sweden, but quite frankly they will have to play better than today.

France highly favourite vs Uruguay, but those feckers know how to defend a result. We shall see, looking at this I would support Uruguay, if not Croatia, don't know if they can, but everything is possible. :)

No problemo, glad we both want to see the guy reach his potential

What a festival of boredom that was. I tried to get enthusiastic about England during the match, but one interesting thing didn't happen until the penalties, bar 1-2 small exceptions.

Hope they be better with Sweden.

As an American who loves United and the EPL... I have a soft spot for England.

Congratulations after so many years of suffering... hopefully this turns over a new leaf for your team.

Some bafflingly stupid plays by Walker and Dier... but I suppose Dier made up for it with that clutch kick from the spot.

Great job by Marcus...

Good luck against Sweden!

ETA: don't know why it autocorrected c l u t c h into jolly

It wasn't that bad a penalty, Ospina just read his run up (something De Gea could maybe note for future penalties).

Captain aswell so he'd have been panned if England had gone out and he hadn't stepped up....like Ince and Tony Adams in the 90s.

Edit: Sorry vice captain.

They don't.

They have four players up front that sorta do something for half an hour or so and then get knackered. They don't actually create chances, they just run around a bit.

They've got a bunch of players at the back that are alright but once they get knackered suddenly forget how to defend.

And then a massive void in the middle where there's nothing and nobody.

We're gonna get punished for that complete lack of midfield at some point.
Completely agree. We have no midfield to speak of and therefore rely on our defenders to control the game and our front players to be electric. Our defenders are doing a good'ish job but our attackers are not performing. Ali is definitely underwhelming. And Sterling has been woeful in every appearance so far. Southgate only has himself to blame in this respect as there is no rational reason for Sterling to still be in the side and that was before the game even kicked off.

We are very lucky with the draw because this we are wide open to get beaten by a half decent team.

If you dont count shithousery and Neymar being a baby Brasil looks really good, like they dont have to go out of the 1st gear and they still beat you easily. France is good also although they were helped by how lousy Argentina has been.
We got that monkey of our back, going through a 1st knockout phase for the 1st time since 1998 so for me anything more is just a bonus.
In normal circumstances we should beat Russia but they're hosts and really anything can happen. I expect another tuff, horrible game.

As for England we usually do better then the opponent is playing attacking football and is open and when we face a big name. But certainly I'd rather we play Sweden if we go pass Russia. :D

What you on about?

Salah didn't take a penalty?

Bizarre creature.
Just your usual hypocrisy for criticising Salah's bravery for not playing on with injury wheras Vardy gets a pass for not being brave enough to step up in a penalty shootout for his country.

Bizarre creature? Talk about lacking any self-awareness.

Quite frankly can't see Russia doing better than they did on Sunday, regarding England or Sweden, don't know if Sweden is a good matchup, they probably would do a Santos on you guys, even with more style

When the ball was kicked Pickford still had his trailing foot on/behind the goal line. Doesn't that mean technically he was still on the line, as required?
Is that the rule? When he saved it no part of his body was anywhere near the line, just like kasper and Croatias keeper.

The only two i haven't notice dive forward were de gea and ospina. They are both going home

Embarrassing from the Columbia lot.

The best thing about that game is we will have a lot of neutrals on side now! They’ll love the way we play!
