Diogo Dalot - next move?

Naw. Bruno had much more of a positive influence on their attacking play than Darlot. I'm not saying he was perfect but he produced a few dangerous moments.
Aye, a few dangerous moments for the fans in the stadium when he walloped it wildly over a few times.

Struggled against Hazard , but he should be given a chance to fight for his spot in the team. Can't go into next season expecting Aaron to play 47+ games again.

What accolades did he have to his name for us to spend so much on him at the time? Was he that good at youth level? Because I’m pretty sure he only played about 2 senior games for Porto

He's awful defensively, and his attacking threat isn't enough to compensate. And he's not very bright (footballing wise) either.
I'd give the game time more to Williams at RB. At least the latter has shown some promise with us, and he always gives 100%.

He was hugely rated in Portugal at the time. And we also had Woodward and Judge in charge, so there's that with regards to the money.

I don't get it either. He's a young 22 year old player who is obviously still developing. The need to attack him is strange.
Think sometimes on here we only talk in extremes about our players. No real middle ground.
Yeah in fairness he isn’t dross. He’s just exceptionally average and we need better to challenge AWB.
I think there's a decent player in there, but I'd agree I'm not sure he's the one to challenge AWB. Although I wouldn't mind giving him a go if we spend the money elsewhere.

So you think an attacking midfielder had more of an influence on attack than a rightback. Well thats surprising

the transfer was all on Jose. A cynic would say he just wanted to buy any young player to prove his critics wrong.

if I remember we paid more than his release clause to get him a couple of months early.

poor signing.

Surely he's off to Milan for a reunion with José when they play Roma

I'm not sure. I think we can still recoup what we paid. Think he might fetch 12-15m, add a sell-on clause and we're probably there. Jose may well have been the reason for signing him, but he's not the one saying "pay x amount". No one can take that off Woodward and co, they earned that reputation and were suckered non-stop since SAF retired. So bad have they been with money it looks like intentional sabotage. Anyhow, I digress. I think he's not even in the top 10 of our worst signings post SAF, all things considered.

Some dopey moments tonight. Heading the ball at the end for no reason when there was a perfect chance to get the ball down sums him up, you're never quite sure if he's going to make a mess of things. The odd good moment, good cross, then something really silly to mar things.

I think he's alright in that he can play either full back position okay, but truthfully he's never going to really challenge for those spots. I'm not sure theres as much point these days to an average utility man, you're better off having specialists that are either very good backups or genuine challengers for a position, or young and improving.

I'd be inclined to keep him. He's just turned 22, has lots of attacking potential and we don't have to pay a fee for him. Rather keep him than spend 25M and higher wages on Trippier, when we could be spending it on a DM or CB.

If you take a step back, we've bought him as an inexperienced teenager and he's now 22 and gone from not ready to being a decent Milan player and starting for Portugal. Runs well and has some skill so if he continues to develop on the normal trajectory should be a decent attacking fullback in his prime years he's about to go into (if you figure fullbacks peak a little early around 24-27 or so).

Some sense here, agreed.

We have 50 million RB, Diogo Dalot is a decent cover with potential. He can turn it around, if Shaw can, anyone can.

Decent back up, not a world beater by any means but unless we are looking for a RB to genuinely take AWB's spot, that's what would be expected of him anyway

I'm pretty sure he had a buy out clause of €20m at Porto which we triggered with the help of Mourinho. Mourinho went onto say that Dalot was one of the best young RBs in Europe and would be a mainstay in the first team for 10 years and it was thanks to one of his personal scouts that we signed him.

I would rather give more chances to Williams at RB. Our mistake last season was we played Wan Bissaka in 99% of games, meaning when Williams was called to play he was out of rhythm. I dont think that is something to worry about to be honest. Dalot though looks perfectly average, I have little hopes for him.

He was highly rated youngster who was tracked by most of big Clubs if reports at that time were to believed and the reason we paid bit higher than release clause was to probably get better transfer fee structure paid in installments instead of paying the complete fee upfront.

If we can get rid fir the same money that A.Madrid want for Trippier, then happy days. We can then loan out Laird for another season and hope he can start pushing.

Dalot has done well but not so well that he will be able to compliment AWB so much when he's not playing.

I'm not sure that comparison holds much water because Shaw had some credit in the bank. In fact he was one of the most highly rated young full backs around playing regularly in the PL for Southampton and had plenty of good performances for us. We had to work on his mindset and it took a while but the tools were quite apparent.

With Diogo I'm not quite sure he's put together many impressive outings and it's harder to understand what his qualities are except the odd cross. In fact when Jose claimed he was one of the best young fullbacks in Europe it's easier to wonder what he was smoking on that particular occasion than to agree with him based on what he's shown. That was either tremendous hyperbole or a severe misjudgment, or maybe there's a chance he's a slow developer.

How is Shaw relevant to Dalot?

Shaw was not just highly rated he was playing well at 18 and even when he joined United, the first season he was very good until the injury.

There is literally no comparison.

I don't mind Dalot, he's decent but I don't think he's good enough going forward to be a more attacking alternative to Wan Bissaka in games against packed defences.

I don’t know who we could get that would be cheap, good enough and also happy to sit on the bench for 2/3 of the season when Ole possibly pulls a Williams/Telles on them. He might not be good enough to be a regular starter for us but he’s a decent backup and I think he’s a more aggressive attacker than AWB. He was pretty good for Milan against us and he’s not hiding here tonight either.

No he's is not even a decent backup as Portugal saw last night

Right back isn’t an urgent position that needs to be filled. If Dalot can do the job and be a decent back up then there’s no point spending tens of millions to be a back. There’s other positions that need to be upgraded desperately first.
