We have a limited budget and he would be a squad option.
Yep, not your long term solution, but even Arnautovic at Inter showed that an experienced back up striker - that might not even be a starter for the EPL's/Seria A's 10th team - is generally pretty good. Problem is that it's a big risk when they have to replace your entire goal output. Arnautovic, again, also showed that a backup in a 2-striker system is much different to a single striker one.
We sort of had Rashford before, but just any replacement to Hojlund and Zirkzee available would have been something to help improve multiple players' playing levels.
Like that person said, you cannot work towards EPL winners, so it's important to pick someone that isn't too expensive for your budget, especially if they're not willing to sign single (or two?) season contracts, so that if they aren't okay with moving down to #4 instead of #3, their contract is out soon, anyways.
But it's also a naive tunnel vision to just build to a good XI and some youth prospects and hope for the best. Odi isn't ready and has more to prove than Hojlund. You can't always find a Claudio Pizarro, but with some scouting, and if you're paying good attention during the job interviews and other talks before signing, you should be able to find a #3-#4 striker that will look better than they are while being a backup that actually supports his team.
Even Weghorst could have been all right if he didn't play so much, and he even did look like a good temporary fix in some games. Don't think his personal skills work very well, though, as he seems the Dirk Kuyt type that paints this ultimate team member picture until you pay attention to their words when someone else is picked over them. I'd take all their respective cringes if they didn't backstab their teammates and managers in any subtext they can find whenever they're not a starter. Maybe it's a Dutch thing, since Sneijder was similar, but I guess it feels different because his arrogance and selfishness looked different from these two, and we got a country full of know-it-alls
But there's more space between the ideal technical but supportive backup strikers and the strikers who nod to a well paying backup job and then shake their heads when they get what they signed up for.
Don't know if DCL is ideal, but his situation could be ideal for our current situation, whether it is by accepting a lessened role but at a big club trying to get back to its former glory, or even by using this as a stepping stone to a possible personal redemption. Single season backup strikers moving on to start elsewhere the season after would be pretty good, no? Just don't sign them up for more than 1, maybe 2 seasons when you do. And take the talks seriously as an opportunity to check whether he would (probably, people change, people lie, people do people things) actually be fine with a backup role, AND to return to that role after a string of games with quite some goals when a #1 or #2 striker returns from injury/suspension/temporary replacement due to form, etc.
He's not the only option, I assume, but if he's free (and willing) I think it's worth to get him, as long as he's not the only one, and the signing is done with enough care to avoid this Utd fall going on and on and on yet another season and then another, why pass on an experienced guy with a decent resume for your #3 or #4 striker slot? We're not title contendors now and we won't become one if we start the season with 11 players, or 13-16 for that matter, and just add 10 kids, hoping there is a PR-disaster-less Greenwood amongst them. Ideally you want 11-13 starters, and a main squad of 20-22 able to cover about everything twice, hopefully more with enough versatile players among them, and then basically 4 Heatons/Evanses to cover each line with an experienced player not too spiteful about their own decline/aging processes. Based on versatility and personalities the ideal number could look different (Garnacho as your 12th/13th man looks vastly different to someone like Zirkzee not being one of the secure starters, for example)
I don't know what type of person DCL is, but it seems worth a shot to me to at least get to know him. Just actually take that last part seriously before you rush FM2026 the fella.
