Erling Haaland / signs for Dortmund

I do not rate Rashford as a top class no 9 as we saw when Martial was out injured.

The jury is still out when it comes to Martial, can he bag 20-25 league goals a season? Highly doubtful.

Håland is a super talent and unless the club thinks his transfer will block Greenwood's development we must do everything we can to sign Håland, preferrably already in January.
Greenwood is far from a sure thing too. A lot can go wrong in a players development from potential, as we have seen before.

This thread is amusing. The length people are going to shit on Martial so they can hype their new toy is very Caf like indeed

UEFA announced on Tuesday it had decided to remove the "cup-tied" rule from all European competitions. This means that, for the first time, a player could play for two different clubs in the group stage and the knockout rounds of the Champions League, or the Europa League, in the same season.

Missed that, thanks for the update.

Why am I seeing the phrase "generational talent" all over this thread?
This place is comedy gold.

These lots who've watched so.e YouTube and highlights videos of the guy have already decided he is better than Martial and some generational talent, all that from some highlights and him banging it in some 5th rate league.

It's the new toy/flavor of the month syndrome that tend to hit the Caf

Not sure where he’s fit in the current set up? Martial if he can stay fit looks like he has all the attributes required. Personally want Pogba back in the team, then see how we go.

Robertson, Van Dijk,Kante(played his first full season in the French third division),Mane,Maddison,Vardy etc etc all played in lower rated leagues.

Thats how you get these players before they end up costing crazy money.

The caf has spotted loads of good talent in the past as well as a fair few dudes.

Hmm, the jury is still out on Martial being good enough to lead the line and to even get close to 20 league goals. So I don't think Martial being here should mean we should not sign another striker who could surpass him. Even Martial was half the player he is on the caf he still is injury prone and we saw what happned with Rashford being the main man up top so quality cover and competition is needed.

If we have a shot at getting him there's no reason not to bring him aboard.

Would like for the people saying we shouldn't get Haaland to at least mention a few other strikers that we can realistically get in January that would be good back up to Martial. Mandzukic seems the obvious choice but what other striker fits your criteria? Realistically

I really don’t understand the positivity towards Mandzukic. Never been a great goalscorer, almost 34 years old. Probably demand a big salary and a contract longer than 6 months?

Hasn’t played a minute for Juve and I assume he’s retired from int duty as he didn’t play for Croatia either.

coming into the highest paced league of them all? it’ll take him 6 months to adjust and get his fitness.

All this is fabricated BS anyway, agent talk trying to find him a new club. Ole has said all along he wants the right player, we could have easily signed him in the summer but clearly we weren’t that interested

We don’t have a proper striker. We only have maybes who the jury is still out on. Plenty of room for somebody who can hit the back of the net reliably!

I’m sure the majority of folk who don’t think we should go for Haaland, think so because they don’t see a striker as a priority signing. Do you think it makes sense to buy a player to either displace or cover Martial, over a player to take Pereira’s place in the starting eleven?

People on these boards are fickle and frankly it's embarrassing. We have far more pressing matters and areas of the pitch to address yet people want the club to throw money at their flavor of the months and favorite toys first just to jerk them off.

We need to address areas which are in need of addressing first. We get our midfield sorted first then we can start thinking of other things but midfield is the more pressing matter.

People have to stop embarrassing themselves with these thoughtless posts thrown around.

Big clubs sign exceptional talents when the chance comes along.

It's really that simple. Anyway we need another striker.

60mil euros is cheap for a player who could give us 10 years.

Also Ole himself said striker is a priority position.

Embarrassing.

Ferguson signed RVP because he became available when our midfield was just Carrick trying to cover for everyone else’s shortcomings. It won us the league.

Ferguson signed Ronaldo because he was extremely impressive in a friendly match despite the plan for Ole to be our first choice right winger.

Ferguson signed Cantona on a whim after a chance phone conversation with the Leeds chairman who was enquiring about availability of Denis Irwin.

If an exceptional talent is available you sign them

Exactly. We're woefully short in midfield and are lucky that James, a LW, is doing well on the right. If he gets injured we'll have Lingard, Mata or Greenwood playing there and everyone will be going mental about how long it's been since we bought a decent RW. CF shouldn't be a priority, unless we've got a huge budget, which we almost definitely don't.

Surely you can see the irony here yourself?

Yeah signing a striker to displace Martial or compete with him shouldn't be a priority with the other positions we have to fill. But when we have a chance to sign players like these which is very rare since Ferguson retired we have to take those chances. Jovic Felix Bernardo Silva etc players of their potential no longer want to sign for us but Haaland who you could say is up there with them might actually want to come because of Ole. Imagine if Barcelona decide to sign him to replace Suarez and then he starts bagging lots of goals for them. We would have missed out on a Golden opportunity.

 are you all right mate, need to jerk of your favorite toy to relax a bit?

Exactly. Some of the reports on here you’d think he’s the next Messi

United chased Ronaldinho that summer. So really doubt Ole was ever going to be a regular Right Winger.

Truth about Ole. Is that SAF tried selling him quiet a few times but he never wanted to leave. By that time he’d be our 6th choice striker so SAF told him he might get chances in midfield.

Hence why I and other poster don’t get the “Ole the great player “ myth. He was a bargain signing that exceeded expectations in his first season or so and became a good sub. But people should remember after signing him SAF still felt the need to sign 4-6 other strikers while Ole was still in his peak years.

He’s not really that exceptional. Other then to over zealous Norwegians who are writing about him as if he’s the cure to cancer.

Haaland 11 goals/10 games in European football.
Rashford 10 goals/36 games in European football.
Martial 9 goals/49 games in European football

His European record is pretty impressive.

Uh, his numbers and performances are the literal definition of exceptional. It means outstanding, and he certainly is.

Lukaku had impressive numbers at the same age and still gets trashed to be fair.

Exactly. Also as a striker his style is quite similar to Lukaku also, look at most of his goals. So does it even make sense. Get rid of one because he doesn’t suit the “intended” style of play to replace him with a similar and less experienced player who hasn’t even proven himself in a major league.

But he's a generational talent. Which matters more than logic.

Indeed Solskjaer himself specifically compared his style of play to Lukaku in the past.

We currently have four senior holding midfielders, three senior number 10s, and three senior players for LW, RW and striker. Behind them are the youth players Garner, Gomes, Chong and Greenwood

Sure, most would agree that Matic, Mata, Pereira and Lingard isn't good enough, and despite looking better recently, Fred has also been unconvincing.

It's pretty clear that CM and AM should be improved on, but the need is just as big for a new RW and striker. I don't know if Haaland will be the right signing, but if Ole believes that he is, and the other signings that we want is unavailible in January, then I am 100 % behind signing him.

If that's true, I'd rather we stay well clear off Haaland. No need for another Lukaku, focus on rebuilding the midfield and get some specialist RW.

Hence Haaland can’t be great? What a superb argument. Watch the player, not just a highlight reel, and check out his stats before judging him.

Sooo we still have about 12 games to play before January. I think that's enough time to judge Martial's performance as our striker whether all he will need is a back up because he has proven in those 12 games he is capable of leading our front line. Or whether he will need some competition for the no. 9 if he puts in some poor performances.

Basically if Martial plays well and shows he's more than capable of leading our attack then by January we should be looking at getting a back up like a Giroud or Mandzukic. But if he has some poor games and shows he's incapable of leading our front line every week then get Haaland for some competition for the no.9
