Euroleague is starting tommorrow!
As many of you know, this is considered the second best basketball competiton in the world, after NBA.
This competition has a curious story. It used to be a FIBA competition, and was supposed to be an elite competition, the best of the best. Unfortunatelly FIBA is too conservative and their management of this competition did not please the major leagues from Europe, who were accusing them to cause entropy on european basketball competitiveness.
At 2000 the major european clubs started a new association in order to make european basket goes forward. There was even two euroleagues that year, but FIBA Euroleague had to deal with lower quality clubs, though
The truth is, with this great competition even Real Madrid, who really didn't gamble that much on basketball, now is a top budget team. We have investors buying basketball clubs to participate here, like happened with Olimpia Milano.
And everyone has to admit, the results are encouraging. This competition keeps growing year after year, budgets are getting bigger, teams are playing better, the scouting level is quite good, more money involved, etc.
I really enjoy this competiton, more than I do NBA. Don't get me wrong: I'm perfectly aware that the technical level in NBA is miles above the Euroleague, for cultural reasons and mainly for budget reasons.
But I do fancy Euroleague because:
Licensed clubs:
Former Euroleague winners since 2001:
As a curious information, here is last season estimated budgets (some of these teams are not on this season Euroleague)
Clubs summary:
Arena:
Made a very solid season and have improved their squad. They had made major changes to their roster and judging their transfer activity I can see the manager wanted more height into the team.
They are usually a very solid team at home.
Arena:
A very disappointing season by Milano, since they had one of the biggest budgets on Euroleague. This year they appointed an italian coach who made a fantastic job at Hapoel Tel Aviv. It will improve their teamplay for sure.
The squad suffered major changes, and by the names who were retained from last season you can see the coach wants to build an identity from scratch. Their acquisitions are quite solid.
Arena:
This team made a fantastic first half of the season, overachieving for most of the time, but then their production just took a dip.
They made a surprising appointment though: their most legendary player just became their new coach, a bit similar to Real Madrid appointing Zidane.
They have lost some key players, which probably shows that their budget is lower for this season. They have lost their key player Larking, who got transfered to Boston Celtics.
They made some interesting acquisitions though, like Granger, Garino and McRae (who got injured)
Arena:
Even thoug they did not made an over the top season at Euroleague, there clearly was some progress under this coach. The team was very close to reach the playoffs.
They were able to retain a good part of their squad from last season and made some good hirings like Quincy Miller, Ricky Hickman and Luka Mitrovic.
They are quite an unpredictable team. They are usually the underdogs, but they seem to win a good lot of matches.
Arena:
Even thoug they are the lowest budget from Euroleague, their tactical and team work is quite wonderful.
But being a lower budget team means they will loose a lot of key players year after year, and this year was no exception by letting Jenkins go to Khimki, among other good players who left for bigger clubs.
They almost qualified for playoffs last season, and they will make their opponents run for their money.
But bare in mind that this club scouting network is quite good. They seem to find several good players at low cost prices.
They hired former star, who is already a veteran Pero Antic. He was a top player in his prime, but I doubt he can still make a difference.
Taylor Rochestie was a good hiring thoug and he will give them some good points. They had made a rational approach on the market by scouting D-League and bringing some former players.
Arena:
Clearly one of the top 3 favourites to win the Euroleague, they were also able to retain their top players. And their transfer activity was top notch. They have one of the best players in the game, Nando de Colo. He has quality to play at the NBA, but he's not interested in leaving CSKA, since he's the affiction idol. Sergio Rodriguez is a fantastic and expensive hiring and Philadelphia was much surprised that he decided not to continue there. Westermann was one of Zalgiris best players. Plus, they "stolen" Clyburn to Darussafaka, a player that will give them many points.
Arena:
What a nightmare season last year. Either domestically and continental competitions. The squad was quite good, but they just didn't played as a team. They had appointed former Baskonia coach, who made a very good season last year, but failed in the final moments. Nonetheless, Baskonia was one of the strongest teams of Euroleague's regular season.
Their transfer market was quite good. They stolen Hanga to Baskonia. Hanga is one of Europe's best players, and also stolen Thomas Heurtel to Anadolu.
they also hired one of Valencia best players, Oriola.
A good choice. The spanish basketball league is actually a very good one.
Arena:
Title holders Fenerbahce not only retained most of their key players, they also added more quality. They also have the plus of having one of the best coaches of the sport.
They have signed a symbol of eternal rival Galatasaray, Guler, who is an excelent key passer. They also hired one top Euroleague player from Brose Bamberg, Nico Melli. Expensive hiriing, but it brings quality. And they also made a transfer for the long term, getting Guduric from Crvena Zvezda, one of the most promising young players at the moment.
They keep quality in their squad and they are certainly one of the three favourites to win it.
Arena:
Runners-up of VTB league, they had made a mixed season. They had a solid playoff performance, but overall they were not that impressive. They made a major investment though but strangely appointed former Barcelona coach, who made a very disapointing season overall.
Although they invested some money, their irings kinda feel meh... Even though Honeycutt is an excelent addtion of quality and Jenkins is a household name.
Arena:
Jesus! This was quite a troubled transfer market. They made a full cleaning of the squad, retaining only two players!!! They were very poor last season. This team usually has a very decent budget available every year, so money is not really a problem.
They made a conservative appointment though. Spahija is a veteran coach, but he has a lot of experience either at Euroleague and NBA, though.
As it's kinda normal, they usually hire mostly american players. They brought Norris Cole, who had a solid career back at NBA before wenting to China for those millionaire contracts they offer. They also hired Mashour, who is a top rebounder and the israelian league MVP DiBartolomeo.
Arena:
The eternal candidates to win the title, they are usually always a very competitive team, even if they need to cut the budget.
They have have a good coach, they usually play solid basketball and they have some very good players at their ranks.
They have one of the greatest players of the game, Spanoulis, a household name, and usually the greek players have very decent quality.

Arena:
Another classic candidates, but their budget is dropping in the last years. but still a very strong team. Their home is like a fortress. They made a solid season last year. Not winning any major title, but battled well for every competition they were into.
They made some interesting hirings, like Marcus Denmon who made a very good season at turkish league, and brought Lekavicius from Zalgiris (poor bastards, they lost so many key players.).
Arena:
Another top 3 favourite to win the title, they are a very interesting team to watch. They play that beautiful free-flow basketball, but unfortunatelly they don't have the quality depth to doing it all game.
They were able to keep one of the best youth players in the whole world, Luka Doncic. It's amazing that he's only 18 and they have the amazing Sergio Lull, who unfortunatelly is currently injured. In fact, if he was less injury prone he would easily be a superstar worldwide.
They made an interesting market: kept most of the key players and added some potential youth players to an already talented squad.
Yusta is a NextGen player and Campazzo also has some potential, but it's relatively small for a basketball player (1.80m)
The other two hirings was bringing players who performed well at Euroleague from Bamberg and Crvena Zvezda.
Arena:
A very good season. They won the Eurocup and were involved in major decisions at Spain. They have a very decent team and made some rational hirings, by bringing players with Euroleague experience and brought Salin, who is an excelent shooter.
Arena:
They were so close of doing such a perfect season. They almost won the Eurocup and made the amazing feature of winning the spaninsh league against a super-team of Real Madrid. Their hirings are cirurgical, but they usually find some good market oportunities and the lithuanian player base is usually good, which makes things easier.
They hired Axel Toupane, an NBA outcast that will help them through the season, and got one of the french league main players Dee Bost.
