I'll only watch United live maybe 3 times a season, every time though match goers around me will celebrate by making hand gestures and immediately looking over to the opposition fans, a bunch of random strangers who support a different team.

Same when they score, and you'll see it on TV often too.

I've never got my head around why it happens, can anyone explain it to me? I wouldn't go to the cinema and celebrate watching a great film by going into another screening and shouting "Wheeyy feck off wanker" to some random guy in the back seat eating his popcorn.

I normally stand right on the away section and shake hands with the opposition when they score. Will give it a good cheer if it's a good move.

Because it's not watching a cinema isn't it? Football is tribal and competitive by nature. If everyone just treated as watching any other entertainment like movies or theatre, then we'd just be clapping hands at every goal and that would be rather sterile.

Under soil heating.
Vardy loves doing this more than any other player I've seen I think. Don't really see an issue with it though, I'd do the same!

Comparing a football game with a movie in a cinema. What a ridiculous thread.

I was with the away fans at WHU having to listen to the West Ham fans make Munich and airplane gestures for 90mins, so you can do one with this sanctimonious shite & even shitter analogies.

There's no comparison between watching a movie and Utd scoring the winner. Its tribal, not only is it about us winning its about letting the other team/fans know we're better than you and are going to rub it in. There's also an intense energy at football grounds that bring out a different side to people.

It’s much needed, so long as it’s nothing racial or similar, just the usual ‘feck off’ with the two finger salute is customary.

Weird to compare with cinema. Do you cheer when your favorite actor does something on screen?

Imagine this thread made in the 70s:

I go to a game 4 times a year and occasionally I get my head kicked in. I don't understand why, never happens when I go to the opera.

Is this a wind up?
Yes and the amount of people taking it seriously is making me cringe.

I've never had any inclination after we score to do anything but enjoy the goal and the moment. Why waste it on a bunch of strangers?

I tend to put my wind up threads in the football forum rather than the general forum too for added gotchas

To be fair, i've been a 'fan' for nearly 30 years. So if I make it shit, it's been shit for quite a while now.
You missed my smiley face. I turned your wind up against you.

Nah, it's each to their own, some get riled up by the oppo fans more than others. If they've been giving it chops all game it's sometimes a natural reaction to give them some back when we score. Happens in every stadium.

I remember going with a friend to watch Terminator 2 (first mistake) in the theater and sitting down next to this couple who couldn't stop talking about how much they loved the series (second mistake)... When one of the good robots won a battle the guy started whooping...

I had a look of disgust on my face the rest of the movie (actually the entire movie, it was trash)

Real fans pee on rival fans to show their dominance. Not this shouting bollocks.

I know what you mean. I hate it when I'm at a panto and the crowd shouts 'oh yes he is.' You might not agree with him, but you need to respect his opinion.

Yeah, we should have mixed fan seating and all hold hands with each other.

Depends how much the opposition fans have been giving it.
If they've been giving it large then they're gonna get the finger.

I’ll be controversial… there is something a little weird about grown men shouting random insults and sticking their fingers up at thousands of other random blokes who are doing the same back.

Those blokes who like to scream and swear at the players and/or referee are plonkers, too.

Look at me and how many swear words I can say in my loud voice.

In summary, football grounds are full of weirdos.
