Fred is one of the most underrated players in England

With a back three and a midfield of five, including Fred and McTominay 'hunting as a pair' both are great, with a back four, and Fred and McTominay together in front and alone it is a midfield suicide pact, and every PL manager knows this now.
Ole has to be careful when and how he uses Fred.

Fred with some 'forward facing' tackles are great, chasing back or going the other way its a free kick to opposition every third tackle.
Hard grafter, can do some great work winning or 'pinching' balls from opponents, but then his final (distribution) ball is often dismal
When he should be covering for others, he ends up needing cover himself .
I do feel he is getting better and with better players around him will become a valuable asset, but not quite yet!

If Fred could pass the ball properly, I swear he'd be one of the best midfielders in Europe. His passing is indeed sub par, but my word, everything else is excellent. He's slowly reaching cult hero status.
Passing, and any semblance of creativity or shooting.
He's not necessarily a defensive midfield either.

However, he's very effective in the right setup.

I think his play style is very similar to kante, but he doesn't have the same physicality and deicsion making as Kante. He's probably a better passer as well.

He's rightly got some stick for the howlers he can sometimes do, at vulnerable parts of the pitch. The man's got a superb mentality though, proper team player and determination in abundance.

He is a ball winning midfielder basically, harries the opposition and should just focus on playing simple balls to Pogba and Fernandes and let them do the creative work.

His poor start at United seems to be following longer than similar starts have followed other players in terms of their reputation. Has been really good for over a year and would be a starter in my best United xi especially for tough games

Shouldn't be essential against 'weaker' teams

Would it be fair to say he was brought in as a backup for Pogba, but now is being used as a replacement for Matic? So he's been on a bit of a journey.

The problem for Fred is that in football, once you have a reputation for being a flop, that reputation stays with you and is very hard to rid.

Another problem is that his name is rather lame for a Brazilian. If he was called Rivaldinho or something like that, he'd be rated much higher.

He just isn't a good footballer. But has energy levels of an elite athlete.

He should be playing where McTominay is and we should buy someone who can do the defensive job mctominay does AND offer a threat in possession

Best United on the pitch without being that good so we're so shite. Red card in the making worry.

The problem with Fred is that he's too erratic. He hounds players superbly and has really good stamina levels. But everything else is hit and miss. Sometimes he passes well in between the lines and thinks quickly, other times he gives the ball away far too cheaply and can be a liability. Like I said he hounds players well, but is physically weak and loses balance easily. Can't play a long pass. He can't shoot either.

So yeah, pretty good player but nowhere near as good as some United fans think.

His game is summed up by the fact that he stepped over the ball and allowed the ball to roll back to Maguire despite the fact that he had no one around him and could've started a new attack with us higher up the pitch.

It's like he has decided that he's only there to break attacks up and nothing else.

His name is awesome. It is Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos. I like it short as Fred but he could just as easily choose one of the other 4 words In his full name, couldn't he?

He’s absolutely garbage. Him and Mctominay they don’t know how to pass forward.

Also that has many weaknesses in his game.

Good off the ball with his athletic ability and aggression.
Not particularly impressive on the ball with the same simple mistakes when receiving the ball and when passing it.
Would still start him together with Matic.

Him and McT are both far from good enough on the ball to both be starting at the same time.

Been poor but no idea why he's been moved to a deeper role after his performance in mid week. I like McT but he doesn't have much purpose in a game like this.

He's going to get all the criticism because people have already made up their minds on him and he's been known as a flop but he's been not worse than Bruno Pogba and Mctominay this game and has done better defensively

A big big struggler against pressing teams. Loose control, not enough awareness and too many careless passes in bad areas.

Did better in the 2nd half against Leizpig after a poor first half so hopefully the same again after he gets the hairdryer

The generation of Brazilians featuring Bernard, Oscar, Fred, Allan and Lucas is just shite. You half expect Bob and Steve to show up in yellow and blue soon.

Kennedy too.

We need strong South American names like Alexis Mac Allister.

He wasn’t the problem today. McTominay and Ole were -The former didn’t know how to play the role and the latter left hm on for the whole game.

*Overrated

61 minutes today before being hooked, and 45 minutes before half time against Leizpig the game before where he was truly truly tumescent

He was hooked because he was on a yellow card.

It's because he was terrible in his first 12 months. That's why we had a "Why did we buy Fred?" thread.

Not a good performance today but he was still our best midfielder out of a bad bunch today.
