My God we shouldn't really involve ourselves in this mess Barca are in with De Jong, now that its becoming clear what is holding up this deal I'm not sure what we're doing here.
Identify an alternative, make a bid that is slightly less than the club would accept, see if Barca/Frankie are willing to keep messing about knowing the option of a move here might be off the table soon.

He is still on holidays, isn't he? I would expect the deal to accelerate when he returns to Barcelona. Presumably he is due to meet with the club alongside his agent.

We are his plan B.
We're not his plan B. What you hear in the media and what is said behind closed doors are two totally different things.
ETH is certain that he'll come, otherwise he'd have pulled the plug. If reports are to be believed that they're in contact every day, then you have to wonder why that is. Barca are painting a picture of de Jong being the mercenary, wanting the money because they didn't want to sell and he didn't want to reduce his salary, so for the "good of the club" they had to move him on

This is just getting weird now. Barca need to sell him, he's reluctant to come, but seems to be resigned to it, right?

Everyone knows Barca's financial woes. I just don't get what's holding this all up.

Only thing I can think of is they're hoping someone else will come in for him and up the price, or some miracle cash injection is made to the club.

If the season started tomorrow, they couldn't even play their new free signings right? Honestly, no idea why anyone would go there right now.
Did you read any of the issues? Like how De Jong accepted to defer large amounts of his contract due to their financial issues to future years just so they got past their initial hump... So his salary is effectively due to jump from something like 4m the past 2 years to 16m-18m the next 2 years? And if he is to leave, then he would want the money he is owed that was deferred to be paid in the future. Whereas Barcelona essentially want to forgo any money owed AND get out of raising his contract back to that level.

Here's a better summary:

Saw a couple of tabloids saying Ten Hag is fuming at this deal breaking down.

Glad to see there's still some positivity on here though.

if we can't get this over the line, then it's solely because de Jong loves being fecked over and over again by Barcelona. People will blast United if he does, but what really can you do?

still confident it'll happen.
I really dont like how FDJ taking a pay cut is still an option, because I can actually see him doing that.

Imagine after all this he comes and we end up playing mcfred after 5 games
He is being built into being some midfield god through the anticipation and hype. Not possible to live up to it, very good player though he is.

I'd love to see those Spanish cnuts go into administration. I'd expect a lot of clubs would want to. Nobody wants to deal with them.

Romano's tweets don't make sense. We know ETH knows De Jong very well so if the player's stance is I'm staying and Barca will have to keep to the contract then we'd be well on to other targets by now. You could say we might be holding on for a small chance and ten Hag will work with what he's got if it doesn't happen but the strong stance implied by Romano I don't think we'd be carrying on this long.

If even a fraction of these reports are true we seriously need to pack our stuff and move on. This is getting ridiculous.

It does kind of feel like we're trying to butt in on a messy divorce, even though the wife wants to stay

to be honest, I still don't think this option is really on the table for him. He'd be incredibly stupid to agree to that, and Romano has reiterated that it's not something FDJ would want.

just saying, IF he does then it's hard to blame United. We've negotiated a fee and ETH has apparently been in contact with FDJ all the time, so what more can you do?

Ultimately, there is no need for him to push for a transfer unless he gets paid. There's no way he's moving without getting those deferred payments.

The man doesn’t want to come and doesn’t have to drop his salary to stay. He can simply stay and they can do nothing about it.

The outcome of this has been blindingly obvious since day one. All this nonsense about not negotiating if we didn’t know he wanted to come can be put to bed as well

Until the reliable UK journalists collectively report something of significance, it's best to assume nothing has changed and we're still hashing out the structure of the payments.

I hope we stop trying to sign players from Barcelona soon. Thiago and Fabregas were carbon copies of this

Barcelona just play games and the players don’t want to leave.

So much noise over this transfer and it's all coming from the Barca end. Not worth paying much attention to what is being said publicly as most of it is probably BS.

I'll call Fellaini....
Barca didn't want to sell Fabregas, and they didn't have to sell him. Every offer we made, they rejected until finally they wrote to us to tell us to go away pretty much.

Barca NEED to sell Frenkie, or get him to reduce his wages yet again, which he refuses to do by all accounts

Move on now. We got 4 weeks now until 1st premier league game. Surely Ten Hag would want all transfers done by then.

They've already reported that United are getting a bit confused as to why Barca are telling the media one thing and them another. They're questioning at times which is the truth.
Today they said he's not for sale UNLESS they need to sell him. Again, it's painting the picture that when he leaves, it's not Barcas fault, it's a financial issue that FdJ wasn't willing to help with

500k a week.
Wow

They only need him to register other signings. If that’s the case then I can see why De Jong is thinking why should I leave just to let them sign lesser players in my place? Why should he give up his dream for Marcus Alonso?

We're in advanced negotiations but we should bin all the work we've done and move on...

Why do people still keep saying this
