Carlo Garganese’s Comment: Cristiano Ronaldo The Greatest Of All Time? Here Are 100 Players Better Than Him
Goal.com's Carlo Garganese ridicules the outrageous comments from Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes, who claimed that his client was the "greatest player of all time"...

And this week's 'Andy Gray Award' for most idiotic, ignorant, asinine comment goes to super agent Jorge Mendes.

This morning the Portuguese negotiator was quoted by Expresso as claiming that his client Cristiano Ronaldo is the "greatest player in the history of football”.

“I think that it is thanks to his speed, his great technique and his power in the air. People will agree with me over time," he explained.

Now we all know that most agents will say anything to spark a bit of publicity for their puppies. Potential sponsors who know nothing about football will see the headline "CR7=t3h be5t" and come to Ronaldo with open cheque-books hoping for endorsements. Some will argue that Mendes' comments are to be ignored as they are strictly business-related.

However, for the uninformed football fans and readers out there - especially the younger audience - it is important to stress just how ludicrous Mendes' quotes are.

Best player debates always cause controversy. As Goal.com's Kris Voakes moaned a few weeks back: "In a sport which is so intrinsically team-based, why oh why people need to pick the bones out of everything Player X does in comparison to Player Y, heaven only knows. And some like to then break down the merits of footballers over a period of up to half a century and decide that Player Q is actually better than either X or Y. But one of the best things about football is that it generates such a vast array of opinions, and the ‘greatest player in the world’ debate is just another topic for people to get their teeth into, so who am I to stop them?"

And you won't stop me Kris.

Below, there are 100 players I managed to compile in less than an hour who I believe are better players over the course of history than Cristiano Ronaldo - when weighing up individual ability and success. Due to the shortage of obtainable 90-minute footage prior to 1960, players from the 1950s and earlier were not considered in this list. There are also many others, particularly South American-based stars such as Alberto Spencer, who could be regarded superior to Ronaldo but would take too much space to justify.

Ronaldo is not in the Top 3 Portuguese players of all time yet, and he is not even in the top 100 players of the last 50 years. Care to argue about it Jorge? I will gladly debate it with you!

:lol:bitter much? Carlo Garganese is the biggest jackass in football

anyway....this should be fun....

The biggest crime is under "Scotland" he didn't mention Denis Law. Which immediately disproves any knowledge the writer may have about football.

Also that must be one of the bitterest articles ever.

Pathetic article in response to an initial pathetic claim.

It's not actually aaaaaaaaaall that bad and I think it warrants a discussion as to some perennial debates over cross-position comparisons and more importantly cross-temporal comparisons.

I do believe he stretches it a bit, which is understandable since obviously his challenge was to bring up 100 players when he perhaps had only 74 or 92 in mind, but I wouldn't rubbish his list simply because it sports players from different positions than Ronaldo.

I wonder how old the journalist is however, and whether he actually ever watched some of the players he quotes.

the perceived arrogance in the statement makes people take up increasingly entrenched opposing views, however stupid the article is his agents statement is clearly just as stupid, he's probably not the best player in spain at the moment, almost certainly not reals best player of the last 10 years let alone the best ever.

I still can't believe he left Ireland out, don't really care about Ronaldo. Both statements are thick but the author stretches the truth to make a point.

yep

Sadly I haven't seen enough of most of those players - as in watched them playing 90 minutes week in week out - to even begin to comment.

He is only 25 by the way. They compare him with others like he is retired. He is going to achieve so much more by the time he retires. This guy should be fired just for writing this article. What a waste of time and space!

Shock horror, another list of players from the past who are superior on the basis of the fact that they are from the past. It's like that in any part of life, people saying old cars, music, houses etc. are better just because with no real argumentation to it.

Nobody has done, everyone making this sort of list bases their opinions on what other people have said to a certain extent.

Where's Giggs and Scholes....

Spot on. It's such an unfair comparison. There's no doubting that Ronaldo is climbing the ladder of footballing greats at a steady pace. Who knows where he will end up? This idiot is being bitter and showing his obvious bias by writing him off prematurely. You can't expect an objective article from someone of that mindset.

Someone has an agenda, it is very difficult to argue against a player who has scored 97 in 114 league games in the last three and a half seasons in the two best leagues in the world.

Absolutely ridiculous. Gordon Banks is better than Cristiano Ronaldo...despite neither of them ever doing anything similar in a game of football.

This is the sort of debate you'd find on a primary school playground.

Forget the fact that 95% of the players listed aren't the slightest bit similar to Ronaldo.

What a pathetic 'list', that's just a set of famous players from various countries.

It's even more worthless than Pele 100 greatest players.

Stupid article written by an absolute moron, Cristiano Ronaldo is easily better than at least 95 players on his list.

......

I'll say nothing more than that just in case you're fishing!

the agent said "is the best" meaning like know which is a load of bs

Mendes himself surely doesn't even believe the shite he spouted but I think some of the names on that response is way OTT.

Mendes' comment was a "agent bigging up his client shocker" and this fool fell for it hook, line and sinker.

It's sad when it comes to this. People are so either anti - CR7 or Messi, that its a shame most cant seem to enjoy and appreciate their talents and sadly, until either of them really flourishes on the international scene, they will never be regarded in the top top echelons of football.
