He's not the messiah... he's a very naughty boy
So we picking a manager/coach this round? Can be from the sport we already used?
Rules:
  • Snake draft.
  • Maximum 6 hours per pick. After 6 hours the next person will be allowed to pick.
  • 5 rounds of player picks first. Then a 6th round for managers.
  • There are no restrictions on managers (you may choose a football manager even though you've picked a football player).
  • Do post a pic and a short text of your pick if you want to.
  • Tag the next user when you're done.

My actual pick is Phil Jackson by the way. My jibe at the spelling of Belichick was clearly a poor one.

1. Team must consist of (all in a GOAT context):
  • A leader. Someone that brings the whole team together and gets the best out of everyone.
  • A winner. Simply obsessed with winning. 2nd place is the end of the world.
  • A superstar. Fan favourite. Brings bums on seats.
  • An innovator. Someone that transformed their sport.
  • A pantomime villain. A showman that overacts and misbehaves. The nastier you are, the more they love you for it.
2. Send me your lineup using the following format:
  1. Leader:
  2. Winner:
  3. Superstar:
  4. Innovator:
  5. Pantomime villain:
  6. Manager:
3. Post a very brief explanation (maximum 2 sentences) per team member.
4. One big poll that will run for 7 days to determine a winner.

Pretty hard to sell someone in 2 sentences when most of us have at least one athlete people won't even have heard of. :(

Welcome to the first ever GOAT Athletes Five Stars Final! Vote for the greatest team using the following criteria:

Team must consist of (all in a GOAT context):

  • A leader. Someone that brings the whole team together and gets the best out of everyone.
  • A winner. Simply obsessed with winning. 2nd place is the end of the world.
  • A superstar. Fan favourite. Brings bums on seats.
  • An innovator. Someone that transformed their sport.
  • A pantomime villain. A showman that overacts and misbehaves. The nastier you are, the more they love you for it.

Team @altodevil
  1. Leader: Mia Hamm
  2. Winner: Simone Biles
  3. Superstar: Usain Bolt
  4. Innovator: Tiger Woods
  5. Pantomime villain: Ronnie O'Sullivan
  6. Manager: Phil Jackson

Team @Šjor Bepo
  1. Leader: Bill Russell. A guy with more rings then fingers, one of the best ever(could be the best we cant know) to play the game of basketball.
  2. Winner: Janica Kostelic. Best ever athlete in croatian sport history and best ever in skiing, unfortunately she retired early cause of injuries and to give a chance to common people.
  3. Superstar: Steffi Graf. She was ranked n1 for a record 377 weeks and won 22 Grand Slam singles titles, which ranks second since the introduction of the Open Era in 1968 and third all-time behind Margaret Court(24) and Serena Williams(23
  4. Innovator: Martin Brodeur. One of the best GKs in NHL history, Brodeur used a hybrid style of goaltending by standing up more than typical butterfly style goalies, though he adapted to more modern techniques at the latter stage of his career.
  5. Pantomime villain: Diego Maradona. Dont think he needs an introduction on a football forum - showman, drunk, junkie and a cheat all while being one of the best ever to play the game and one of the most loved footballers ever.
  6. Manager: Gregg Popovich. Not only was he a great coach but he was being able to keep the same group together for 10 years cca which in basketball is nothing short of a miracle.

Team @V.O.
  1. Leader: Don Bradman (Cricket / Australia / 1920 - 1949): Greatest batsman ever by an absolute mile, with an average more than 50% better than anybody else to have ever hit a ball in the 140 year history of test cricket. Often cited as the greatest Australian to have ever lived, sporting or otherwise.
  2. Winner: Alexander Karelin (Greco-Roman Wrestling / Russia / 1982 - 2000): Virtually unbeatable Russian monster and all-round real life Ivan Drago who threw other 130kg men around like ragdolls. Karelin ended his career with an incomprehensible record of 887 - 2 including a run of 13 years undefeated.
  3. Superstar: Ronda Rousey (MMA / USA / 2010 - 2016): Took the UFC from having no women's division at all to proving that women can main-event big time shows and compete with the biggest male stars as a box-office draw. Her dominance in UFC and success as a star is credited with helping to increase the prominence of female athletes not just in MMA, but in all sports.
  4. Innovator: Babe Ruth (Baseball / USA / 1914 - 1935): Almost single-handedly transformed baseball from a sport of nurdling the ball into gaps into one of smashing it out of the park. The pre-eminent slugger to capitalise on the rule changes heralding the "live-ball" era of baseball and inspiration for generation after generation of aggressive hitters afterwards.
  5. Pantomime Actual villain: Margaret Court (Tennis / Australia / 1960 - 1977): Her all-time record of 24 grand slam singles titles sets her alone as the greatest female tennis player in history. Her homophobic and pro-apartheid public statements make her a figure that the sport would much rather forget.
  6. Manager: Angelo Dundee (Boxing / USA / 1955 - 2005): Legendary trainer, cornerman, and master motivator. Most vaunted for his work with Muhammad Ali, Dundee also guided Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, and 12 other fighters besides to world championships.

Team @RedTiger
  1. Leader: Cristiano Ronaldo. Leads by example, especially for his national side. Case in point: Spain 3 vs Portugal 3, or pushing and inspiring his team-mates (Quaresma) for penalty shoot-outs.
  2. Winner: Jahangir Khan. Greatest squash Player of all time. Holds the Guinness world record for consecutive wins in any sports with 555 matches unbeaten. 6 world opens and a record 10 British opens.
  3. Superstar: Wayne Gretzky. Greatest ice hockey Player ever. Gretzky is the leading scorer in NHL history, with more goals and assists than any other player. He garnered more assists than any other player scored total points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times.
  4. Innovator: Martina Navratilova. The most grand slam titles ever, male or female. One of the greatest female tennis players ever and in the words of Billie Jean King the greatest ever. She bought a new aggressive style to the sport that inspired female players to the present day.
  5. Pantomime villain: Cris Cyborg. Arguably one of the greatest female fighters ever. 25 fights, 22 wins, 18 KOs. Drug accusations and a victim complex has not helped her image.
  6. Manager: Vince Lombardi. Lombardi is considered by many to be the greatest coach in NFL history, and he is recognized as one of the greatest coaches and leaders in the history of all American sports. Won 5 championships for little old Green Bay. One of the leading voices in breaking the colour barrier in NFL. Inspired sir Alex.

Team @Skills
  1. Leader: Johan Cruyff - Ajax, Netherlands and Barcelona.
  2. Winner: Nadia Comaneci - 10/10.
  3. Superstar: Michael Jordan - Air Jordan.
  4. Innovator: Billie Jean King - man beater.
  5. Pantomime villain: Carl Lewis - drugs cheat.
  6. Manager: Rinus Michels - good coach.

Team @crappycraperson
  1. Winner: Roger Federer: GOAT of Tennis. Hates losing, just look at instances of him crying his eye out on a GS final loss.
  2. Superstar: Sachin Tendulkar: GOAT of Cricket. Forget billions of his fans in India who consider him god, he is revered in other cricketing countries like Australia too. Opposing fans love to see him play well and their team win.
  3. Pantomime Villain: LeBron James: Possibly Second best player of all time in Basketball after MJ. His "decision" to move to Miami made him one of the most hated sportsperson. Even now with Lakers, he gets himself into plenty of controversies and thrives on any heat on him.
  4. Leader: Megan Rapinoe: One of US captains when they won WC in 2019. Golden ball and boot winner for same edition. Leader on and off the field who took on the president of her country.
  5. Innovator: Babe Didrikson Zaharias - Wiki says that she is regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Trailblazer who became the first woman to participate in PGA tournaments. "She was named the 10th Greatest North American Athlete of the 20th Century by ESPN, and the 9th Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century by the Associated Press." Not just golf she won two gold medals in Olympics in track and field.
  6. Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson - Not only he is the GOAT for managers but if there was ever any single manager to look after such a team it would be him. NQAT.

Team @ctp
  1. Leader: Nikola Karabatić. Won everything as a player and is regarded as one of the greatest handball players ever. Always leads from the front.
  2. Winner: Michael Phelps. Won everything. If he was a country he would have more Olympic golds on his own than 170 countries have throughout the history.
  3. Superstar: Lionel Messi. GOAT. Nuff said.
  4. Innovator: Magdalena Neuner. Transformed the sport of biathlon with her mesmerizing shooting skills and her blistering skiing pace.
  5. Pantomime villain: Serena Williams. A winner but at the same time a self-obsessed crybaby.
  6. Manager: David Moyes. Incredible tactician. Look no further than Olympiacos home leg when he displayed sensational leadership skills and resilience to bounce back spectacularly from a first leg loss.

Team @backofthenet
  1. Leader: Richie McCaw. 148 tests for the outstanding rugby union team, the All Blacks, of which he captained them in 110 of those tests. An incredible inspirational leader.
  2. Winner: Katie Ledecky. Still only 23 years old, is there anything she hasn't achieved in swimming? Appeared in the Olympics aged just 15, she won the gold medal in a brutal endurance event - the 800m freestyle. She then followed that up in the 2016 Olympics with 4 gold medals, 1 silver medal (she was not happy) and 2 world records. In total she currently has 34 world medals and has broken 14 world records.
  3. Superstar: Pele. How much actually needs to be said. Just look at the games and goals. 1281 goals in 1363 games. You can forget Maradona, Messi and Cristiano, this man was the original football superstar
  4. Innovator: Jackie Joyner-Kersey. Totally changed the face of modern female athletics. Wasn't just world class in one event, but nearly seven of them. Competed in multiple Olympics games in both the Heptathlon and Long Jump, she could easily have medalled in the 100m hurdles, 200m and high jump. Her world record, set in 1988, is way ahead of her nearest competitor.
  5. Pantomime Villain: Muhammad Ali. It seems weird to put "The Greatest" in this category, but his mouth wound up a lot of people. The thing is, he could genuinely walk the walk. I could have put him in Innovator, Superstar or Winner categories and he would still have been the best.
  6. Manager: Bill Belichick aka The hooded one. There is no way that in any conversation about the greatest managers of all time that he cannot be considered. Won 6 superbowls as head coach, 2 as defensive co-ordinator. He rules all that he sees and drags mediocre teams to great heights.

Having Cristiano as a leader instead of a winner... Surely, there are many better candidates for the role.

It's between him and Gretzky. The others don't compete in team sports and haven't really been leaders.

From what I read of him, Gretzky seems to fit in very well as Winner, Superstar, and Innovator and he's not quite as good a fit in the Leadership category. So Cristiano is probably the best fit considering his options.

Bradman isn't exactly the best leader either - there were better cricket captains than him in my opinion. He's obviously the best cricketer of all time, and he's not a bad captain or anything like that, but Leader isn't the perfect category for him. It's another case of him being one of the only options I reckon and it was probably between him and Babe Ruth.

More on few players....

Leader: Bill Russell
Butch van Breda Kolff - former Lakers coach
"The difference between Russell and Wilt was this: Russell would ask, 'What do I need to do to make my teammates better?' Then he'd do it. Wilt honestly thought the best way for his team to win was for him to be in the best possible setting. He'd ask, 'What's the best situation for me?' "

Winner: Janica Kostelic
MJ of women skiing even though she went through insane number of bad injuries and she eventually retired cause of it in her best years cause she won everything already through the pain. Just watch this:

Innovator: Martin Brodeur
Brodeur's prowess at puck handling was so well known that it led in part to the NHL changing its rules regarding where goalies were allowed to handle the puck outside of the goal crease like a sweeper-defenseman, adding what is known as "The Brodeur Rule".

Superstar: Steffi Graf <3

I agree that he doesn't fit into the category as well as my other picks, it was definitely a case of giving him what was left after everybody else fills a role perfectly. He gets in based off pure ability - he's the most statistically dominant athlete in any major sport ever and a very, very strong contender for the overall greatest in any sport as a result.

Imagine if Jordan scored 50% more points per game than Wilt Chamberlain or Messi scored 50% more goals per game than Ronaldo. That's Bradman.

Steffi

She was unstoppable during her time, Monica got had some success over her for brief period but over all Steffi was at other level compared to others.

These narratives literally generate inside people's arseholes especially in basketball where theres no shortage of storytelling. You'd think we are talking about Russell Westbrook not Wilt fecking Chamberlain.
