Hard Times - Neil Webb

He was on Skysport's "Goals on Sunday" this morning. Ex - United player and England international, he is an example of the great and the glorious who has fallen on hard times.

You could say 'tough luck', I mean, he had it all and blew his chances but I think that's be rather hard.

This is what I found about him on the web:

Webb was forced to give up football in 1996 after a string of injuries following a glittering career with Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.

After netting £5,000 a week when he was playing alongside Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes and Peter Schmeichel, he is now being paid £220 for a week of ten hour shifts as a postman.

Webb gets up at dawn for shifts sorting mail before pounding the streets of Reading delivering mail to 500 houses.

Webb, who played 26 times for England, admits that after 17 years playing football, his employment options are limited.

"I played from 16 to 33 and I have no O-levels and I'm not skilled at anything but football," he said.

I am suprised the game of football can't look after their own. A player with his experience, surely, could be put to some good use somewhere rather than pounding the streets as a postman (no disrespect to postmen).

Tell me you're having a laugh, 032 ?

He was earning five grand a week ffs.........back in the day.

Punters still do a years work for five grand in this country.

Can´t really feel sorry for him.
And whats wrong with being a postman?

and yet there are some on this forum moaning that United not giving free tickets to players probably earning 5 grand or more now

odd that

I know what your saying and I agree with you. But, people do make mistakes; squander the money, don't see beyond tomorrow so to speak; or simply he was pretty awful at managing his money.

Cases like Webb were much more common in the old days but now clubs educate players about handling not only their fame but their money too and all of the big stars have financial experts advising them.

Maybe your right and I shouldn't have any sympathy for him.

If he was earning £5k 15 years ago, and he has feck all now, then he has only himself to blame.
No sympathy from me on this one.
My thoughts exactly.

What hard times? He's got a job to feed himself. He should be gratefull that he can work and earn a living.

If football what he wants, what's stopping him from studying to get the badges.

There are people who would dispute that you were particularly skilled at football, Neil.

He was decptively slow, our Neil. I've seen cruise liners turn quicker.

Hard times but it's his fault he went downhill. Stuart Pearce said in his autobiography how Webb would have 3 bottles of red win the night before the game over dinner.

Theres nothing stopping him from doing TV and media work.

Well, there is the fact that he's terminally dull. But then it doesn't seem to have stopped Ray Wilkins.

Exactly

Lucky if I can save up that much in a year, and all I do is pay a few bills and feed myself

Plenty of others more deserving of sympathy

I mean ffs, all he's having to do is earn a living like the rest of us.

This has annoyed me

neil webb a postman? bet people get their morning paper around noon

me either - when i saw the thread i thought summat bad happened to him. 032you need a dose of reality. my mate is a postman. do you feel sorry for him. they call it a job. ffs get a grip!

and as far as football taking care of their own - how about the older players that didn't make 5k in a career (how old are you by the by - not to take the piss but there was a maximum wage back when busby was managing) that's who football should be looking after not those who pissed away fortunes and are still healthy enough to do a job!

I dont feel sorry for him money wise but in terms of what happened in his career i feel a bit sorry for him. He picked up a nasty injury or 2 playing for his country, never recovered from it really in terms of fitness. If it hadnt been for that he probably would have spent 10 years at United

He never made any effort when he was fit, so feck him.

Shelley? Worth a hatefeck. With a lot of hate.

I for one am outraged that the Glazer family can treat one of our beloved legends in such a way. It's just another sign of how low we've sunk that Neil Webb has to work for a living.

More and more I see that FC United is the promised land. When will the rest of you wake up?

No, he just fecks letterboxes these days. Shelley is a porn star in Turkey.

nah she did a runner when the money ran out and her career took off
Now why doesn't that surprise me.

I remember her waffling shite on the telly and pretending she knew something about football, I knew I was right about her.

Hey, footballers get a lot of down-time. He could have been hitting the books and get himself edgimicated instead of hitting golfballs and the sauce.

His Mrs. was a cnut as well, she used to have digs at Fergie on that shite football show she was on when Webby was still a Red.

He actually has a small spot on Score Tv in Canada for their Sunday games. He speaks over the phone to the presenters and gives them the "inside" view from England.

In fairness to him, he actually speaks very well about the game in general, although he is somewhat biased when discussing United, but that's ok.

 That made me proper chuckle.

Shelley Webb separated from her Husband because he was caught having an affair. She got half of what he had for her divorce settlement.

Future might be up for him, as his 2 kids are on the books at Coventry & Reading

So is she really doing porn or is that a rumour?
