Charlton Ahtletic have completed the signing of striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on a free transfer following his release from Middlesbrough.

The 34-year-old former Holland international opted to join Charlton despite interest from Scottish Premier League champions Celtic. Hasselbaink held talks at Parkhead last week but failed to agree a deal.

Charlton moved swiftly to agree personal terms and, after undergoing a medical, he will join up with the rest of Iain Dowie's squad for pre-season training.

"He brings leadership to the club," said Dowie. "He's a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch. He's played for Holland and his goal record is outstanding.

"When I met Jimmy at his apartment, what struck me first and foremost was the hunger that he still has.

"He was very keen to learn how ambitious everyone at the club was and find out what we were striving towards, and in the latter years of his career he wanted to make sure that there was a purpose and targets for him.

"He brings goals to the club and also an infectious enthusiasm - he is a bubbly character and always has a smile on his face."

Hasselbaink began his career with Dutch side Telstar before a move to Portugal to play for Boavista.

Leeds United paid £2m to sign him in 1997 and after a spell in Spain with Atletico Madrid, he joined Chelsea for £15m in 2000.

He scored 88 goals in 177 appearances for the Blues before joining Middlsebrough on a free transfer in 2004, for whom he scored 34 times in 89 matches.
