Strange that people aren't picking a person who will more than likely go down as our greatest ever player once he retires.

Youre joking right?

It's a fair point. Rio, at his best, was probably the best defender in the world. Giggsy never got to that level, at least not relative to his peers.

That being said, the competition Giggs faced from other midfielders - when he was in his prime - was fierce. No shame in not being the best in the world when you're up against Zidane, Nedved, Figo etc.

Youre joking right?

Rio was genuinely the best player in the world in his position. He was important as Ronaldo in 2007/08. Don't know whether you could say the same for Giggs.

I'd probably say Giggs in answer to the OP though, too often our attack has lacked the ability to beat a man and counter attack at pace.

Closely followed by Rio, you could put Smalling, Jones or Evans alongside him and he'd made them look a million bucks and we'd be a better unit as a whole.

Ryan Giggs has given us the most consistently high performances for the longest period of time, he is the only choice, and the right choice.

Well I have to disagree Nesta Cannavaro were better,Thuram Stam and Ayala too even though they were a few years older, but Giggs is one of the best left wingers the world has ever seen I cant put Rio on the same level even if he is one of my favorite all time players.

Giggs is not one of the best left wingers the world has ever seen. He was never close to being A. The best player in his position or B. The best player in the world.

Phil Neville could do a good job at left back, right back and holding midfield....

could save the Glazers a fortune

Until I realised that it was only current player, I was going to say Scholes. It wouldn't even have to be Scholes at his youthful best either, but more 2006/2007 when he had developed into a player that sat deeper and could control games. We need that right now and have for a number of years.

Out of the current crop? Ferdinand/Vidic or Giggs. While having Giggs at his best would be great and would help us on the wings, Januzaj has been excellent this season while we've got Mata now too. We've hardly been great overall on the wings this season and a couple of our players have been terrible, but it's not a major priority area.

Having a former world class centre back at their very best would be superb though. Not sure which of them I'd prefer to be at their best, though.

Fletcher is a good shout, think I'd go for Rio though. Guy was insane.

The guy has more assists than any other in the CL and in the EPL... more than just goals.

But goals are a vital part of being a winger, especially if you're claiming that he's "the best left winger ever". Giggs acquired his records by being very good for a very, very, very long period, rather than being the best player in his position in the world.

We need to sort out the midfield desperately. So Giggs.

I don't see how it matters; either way, he created goals. At that time, wingers were about assisting more than scoring. He was never a Ronaldo, Robben, Ribery type winger. He was an out and out winger who dribbled and ran past players to aim a cross at the strikers in the box, which he was world class at. Posting only half the stats tell a lie, which was my point.

I would choose Giggs because I think with a modern medical team around him and in the modern game, he would be even more brilliant than he already has been. As a left winger in a three behind the striker, I think he would be absolutely lethal. Imagine his pace and dribbling with Kagawa and Mata's vision!

Second place actually goes to Evra for me. Rio was the better player, but somehow it seems easier to get hold of good centre backs than quality fullbacks. We have three great, young centre backs at the club presently, but we have an aging Evra and Büttner... As I said, Rio was the better player though, and I can understand those arguing that he was the best of the lot.

Carrick isn't in the league of the others; I included him because we lack midfielders and he's not getting any younger whilst being our best option atm.

The guy hasn't scored more than 8 goals in a PL season since 1996. That is not "best left winger in the world ever".

The guy? Thats how you refer to Giggs.. I've watched Giggs play since he was a teen seeing as we have the same age, he is one of the top 5 best left wingers ever go ahead and prove me wrong. On the other hand I could name the top 5 best defenders ever and Rio wouldn't be anywhere near. And dont forget you said Rio was the best defender in the world in your post where as I said Giggs was one of the best left wingers.

Wingers generally are providers for goals.

Giggs, easily. Get him back into his prime, tell him to take up Yoga a few years early.

Ok we will have to agree to disagree, I never once thought Rio was the best CB in the world.

He wasn't IMO, but he was up there.

Best 5 left wingers of all time? Seriously?

Best, C. Ronaldo, Ribery, Rivelino, Ronaldinho.

There are plenty of right wingers/AM's who played out on the left plenty too, many of who are better than Giggs. Like Nedved, for example.

Plenty of wingers have had/are having a higher peak than Giggs.

Bale ffs

Do agree that Rio was better though, best defender of the 00's after Nesta.

Bale??? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Bale is already a better player than Giggs ever has been, get real. As a winger he is outshone only by Ronaldo, and could score 30+ goals a season as a team's focal point. I could have put Ronaldinho there instead, but I chose not since he's not a 'pure' winger. But the point still stands, Giggs is not one of the best 5 left wingers ever.

edit: Fine, I'll put Ronaldinho there, point still stands.

I wouldn't have Rio at his best without having Vidic and VDS at their best too. I think that back three as a unit was arguably the best in my time of watching United.

Bales a bit of a push there  Robben however :(

Just for high levels of consistency Giggs is in the list, there's not many players (never mind left wingers) that have given any club what he's offered throughout his career. Better players there might have been but nothing matching his longevity at the top, he's a freak of Maldini proportions.
