So, news reports saying it's in retaliation to an Israeli strike in Syria, but there are also reports that US troops had been targeted.

It appears its an attack on the US consulate in Erbil. Possibly the latest Iranian attempt to get revenge for Soleimani.

Has been very quiet from the US on this. Reuters say US consulate was a target and that Irans Revolutionary Guard claims responsibility, if that is true then surely there will be consequences.

There's no doubt in my mind that's what the Iranians are after, since they are still traumatized by the death of Soleimani. Using Israeli targets in Erbil as an excuse just buys them plausible deniability when dealing with the inevitable US response.

I also don't doubt that the Israelis are very active in Kurdistan (who they are friendly with), as it gives them a nearby staging point for their own anti-nuclear sabotage operations inside Iran.
