The most telling sign for me was Sancho's lack of comments. If he just came out and said he was happy to stay for this year, the whole thing would be shutdown. If Dortmund genuinely didn't want to sell him, they would have easily got him to say he's staying until at least next year.

Yeah, Romano got a little overconfident about the transfer, but since then, he hasn't jumped the gun. Even with the van de Beek story, he was very cautious.
This isn’t true though. The majority of his transfers stories do happen. If you follow the transfers gossip you will see how many he gets right. The Sancho deal is complex, lots of money, agents involved with no direct communication between clubs. I don’t think you can blame Romano if the deal doesn’t happen.

To be honest, Romano was very late with the Van De Beek deal. I remember when the stories started breaking on Saturday evening. Romano's first tweets about it were just regarding the fact Utd had been monitoring for weeks. But he never mentioned that before. It was other accounts that started breaking the news first on this one.

Perhaps he's just not that well connected in The Netherlands. All the news came from Dutch sources. The English journos knew feck all too.

They started to break out of the Netherlands just after ten Hag dropped van de Beek from his pre-season match lineup. Mike Verweij was starting up the stories from the Netherlands, and Romano provided the additional info (agent contacts, initial bid, etc.). The rest of the journalists started to follow suit once Mike Verweij dropped the initial news, and that's when we saw briefs about the club monitoring the player for a while.
The VDB ones I remember started a long time ago by the Dutch media. Pretty much when Real Madrid couldn’t afford him. The English media didn’t have a scooby about it. Romano pretty much kept quiet throughout and as you said, only just this past weekend tweeted about us getting him.
The club have still not briefed that they've pulled out of the deal which gives me some hope. That brief might still be coming, but until that happens I would take everything else with a pinch of salt.

My guess is that they wouldn't have any info from Dortmund because Dortmund themselves aren't involved in the negotiations. They've sent out agents to represent them and do their work.
The only reason I think this is still happening is because we have had the usual briefing yet.

I actually think Goldbridge' s opinion (and it's an opinion, hes no journalist) is that Romano was correct, and so are Skysports/Sam Luckhurst. The wages probably aren't a problem (as per Romano) but United may have briefed their usual press sources to try and buy time - and the wages directive is a good way to do this. I think its plausible, particularly if we are just trying to move on Romero & Smalling before financing Sancho.

Rurh Nachrichten are the tier 1 for Dortmund. Think there is a journo working for Kicker who is pretty spot on with them, too. His name i have forgotten. Im sure the German residents here will be able to tell you. Thats why i think people realised Romano had jumped the gun, as neither RN or the particular Kicker journo backed it up. And they definitely would have, if that was the case
imo Romano definitely has contacts, but occasionally piggybacks off others info. I've seen quite a few deals announced or news broken this window recently, before Romano even mentions it, or even gives it a slightest time of day. Then suddenly he has all the details within 5 mins... they are the only times I get skeptical of him.
it's 50/50 really, well to me anyways. I can see united paying the money just as much as I see them pulling out. I just hope they realise they spending money on a potential world class talent that'd reach way above £108m in a few years time. Even if it does mean our expenditure lacks in the future because of it.
Which if true, gives some credence to what the English Journos have been saying regarding the issue, which is that the players wages and agent fees are the issues and not the transfer fee.
He and the Di Marzio tend to do that for La Liga news, but they do give them credit if they do so. They don't have connections all over, obviously, which is why they aren't up front and immediate with all of the events, but they do look for and get reliable info.
I think Romano also did with the van de Beek news by crediting Mike Verweij.

I'm 50/50 on it as a whole at the moment but yes if it goes through I absolutely can see him being ready for the Palace game just like Maguire was ready for the Chelsea game last summer

I expect this to go through around two weeks time. It is a massive deal so won’t happen in days. But the ball will get rolling within the next couple of days.
I’m pretty confident the jinx was all the talk of how many pages this thread was/is/would be. Things were sailing along quite nicely until somebody complained about seemingly not reaching 500 pages and it all fell apart/slowed down.
I can only guess the internet gods were upset and flung a spanner in the works, the same kind of technical gremlins that Ed’s fax machine experienced!

I don't think it was wrong that we were in "advanced negotiations" but for whatever reason we've walked away for the time being.
Either not wanting to pay 120m up front, not wanting to pay a huge agent fee, not wanting to smash our wage scale for a 20 year old...

Maybe we need to sell some players to make room in the squad first. Sales of Smalling/Jones/Rojo etc will help pay a chunk.

The fact that James Cooper (Utd's mouthpiece) and Darmesh Sheth from Sky have reported tonight that theres been some movement with Utd's willingness to come to an arragement around the agent fees and the wages suggests this will pick up pace. They are both of the view that the Fee between Utd and Dortmund is not an issue and the bid will go in as soon as this first step is resolved.
Someone from Utd will have no doubt fed this information to them (especially James Cooper). The fact that Utd have released this info suggests Utd are certainly still involved in negotiations and there is belief from all 3 parties that a deal can be done. There are a number of reports been circulating for a few days from different sources that a deal has actually already been agreed between Utd and Dortmund. We will have to wait and see.
You have to also remember that it remains in Utd and also Dortmund's interest to keep the deal quiet for now in order to allow Dortmund to purchase a replacement without getting ripped off by the selling club. Also, for utd to sign and look for players for the other positions without getting priced out after forking out 120m on Sancho.
When the VDB deal got announced, that personally gave me more belief that the Sancho deal was still very much on. The fact that Utd had gone for VDB instead of Grealish, suggested they wanted to use the excess money saved elsewhere (Sancho).
