Great strategy. If they turn out to be any good we can just buy them back for 80 million in a few years.
You'll earn a lot more money over time if you sell the "decent but not exceptional" youngsters at their peak value before they get a "proper chance", even if you toss buy back clauses to get them back when they hit. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Pogba was an exceptional youngster who left on a free. Entirely different situation. Garnacho is looking like an exceptional youngster. Januzaj, Rashford, Greenwood have been exceptional youngsters. They don't always work out, but you see it instantly and they get their chances. Fair. Garner, is not. Garner, is turning 22 this season, and has had 1 season in the championship under his belt so far.
Look at Liverpool and Nico Williams. The guy has loads of potential at right back. They sold him because they have Trent there and know he won't be needed pretty much ever. So they took the 20m or whatever and ran with it. City, Chelsea and Liverpool all make huge amounts of money from selling their young players. Its why Chelsea can spend 300m this summer and be fine with ffp. Its what United needs to do. Elanga should have been sold already, McTominay should be long gone, tuanzebe should've been sold after his loan spell to villa, Henderson should have been sold after his loan spell to Sheffield United, Pereira should have been sold a good 5 years ago, Lingard should have been sold years ago, Williams should have been sold years ago. None of these were ever exceptional youngsters, all had good loan spells to then get big contracts and waste away as squad players who aren't good enough for the club but with contracts we can't get rid of.
