Been seeing a lot of things on social media putting Stones in the best centre backs of the league. There was a post from a bookies putting him in the best centre backs of United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal as they all play today.

He is so over hyped because he is English and ‘good on the ball’. If City were not so good going forward then that defence would get exposed, especially Stones.

Do you believe he is over rated or he actually is one of the best centre backs in the league?

He's having a good season so far and the praise for that is warranted, to be fair.

On current form he's one of better centre halves in the division, yes.

He's a good player. I wouldn't have him in that combined team you mention, but he wouldn't be far off.

The phrase 'over rated because he's English' is said way too often on this forum. As much as I hate to say it, England have some good players.

He is a decent defender but I would not have any of city's cb playing for united. A fit and peak kompany was the last and probably only class cb they ever had. And also because of this reason I do not see them winning CL. Otamendi is a disaster waiting to happen and stone when pur under pressure will make mistakes.

I am not a huge fan of Jones because of his injury record but as a defender he is far better than stones. But off course because he is associated with pep so he will be overhyped. Anything with pep is always overhyped, so nothing new in here.

Yep.

Have you seen him at all this season, OP?

I have, yes. For a team that is scoring for fun and rarely giving the opposition chances to score, City have conceded 10 goals in all competitions. Yet United have conceded 6 and Jones, Bailly, Smalling are never getting mentioned.

The thread is more of a ‘is Stones overrated’ than ‘is Stones any good’

This definitely warranted a new thread.

Well, at the moment there's at least 40 starting centre halves in the league every week. Probably more considering how many sides are using three at the back.

United and Spurs have some very good defenders. Luiz is a better player second time round at Chelsea. Otamendi has finally turned a corner. I'd struggle to think of ten better centre halves so, ay, I'd consider him one of the better players around.

You do make a valid point regarding City's set up, mind you. Stones is good for what City need. Conversely, I don't think he'd look as good as Smalling, Jones or Bailly in a low block under Mourinho. His actual defending just isn't at that standard. Horses for courses, I think.

He's pretty good and has the potential to become great. Dunno if he's overhyped.

Kerlon was overhyped.

Well, there is a lot of players that would come before him in combined team of those players.

Definitely Bailly, Jones, Alderweireld, Vertonghen.
You could argue for: Cahill, Luiz, Rudiger, Last year's Rojo and even Smalling.

But that applies to any defender, the more pressure they're put under the more likely it is they'll make mistakes though this season I can't think of any individual errors that Stones has made that has lead to goals

Stones is a proactive player abd Jones is a reactive one. Both players are the better centre back for their respective teams and coaches.

Stones is ball playing CB which is perfect for Guardiola. I don't think he's great at actual defending, but he doesn't have to be in City's team.

On current form he is comfortably one of the league's best defenders. He's still got a lot to prove though.

Guardiola is a great instructor, this will come good for him and England when he is 26-27 and enters his prime.

He was overhyped a few seasons ago. Last season he was ripped by everyone deservedly. He's been good so far this season though, so weird time to make this thread. I'd like to see if he keeps it up over the season but till now he's been fine

Haven't seen much of him this year but last year he was horrendous. Not convinced that his defending could have improved so much in that short time. Most likely just having less to do.

Playing well this season. Which is somewhat reassuring as I always rated him highly at Everton and was beginning to think I was hoorendously bad at judging players given how awful he's been since landing at City.

He's been great this season. The guy has taken dogs abuse over the past few seasons so calling him overrated - when he's having a very good season - is pretty odd.

Took over the top criticism last season when he was in bad form and now will receive over the top praise now he's back in good form. You see it constantly in football, especially on here. Pick any player thread and when they score it's "he's class" for a week. Then he goes two weeks without scoring and the other half of the forum posts about how bad he is.

To be truly honest a lot of that is down to DDG and a lot of luck.

Maybe time to call this thread underrated.

Don't know which thread is his.

For all the fawning over McGuire, I actually think Stones is the best CB in that England team. He knits together that back three, and brings assurance when the other two are venturing forward.

In few times, I thought I saw Rio was playing there.

Found wanting defensively. Pep will leave him out

All three at CB could barely do defending. But as long as he doesn't pass in a funny way, according to some.
