Jose Mourinho | Sacked by Roma

If you want a redemption story, Unai Emery pushed Liverpool, probably the best side in the world, to the brink of champions league semifinals exit, a year after beating Manchester United to win the Europa league, all after he was mocked out of England while managing Arsenal and he's doing it with a club even smaller than Roma.

But wait, he doesn't have glycerine on hand to incite a pity campaign.

I mean you can say nice things about one person without at the same time not also saying nice things about somebody else. You know this right?

I never understand people who turn their nose up at any trophy in football, let alone a European one. I’d be more than happy to have a Europa or Conference League final to look forward to.
I think real winners chase every success possible.

This. At this rate, especially with people downplaying other leagues, there's only about 2 worthwhile club trophies

The arrogance here is staggering, Man Utd is a big club no doubt but atm you aren't CL big, bros you couldn't even win the Europa League last year.
Just accept where you are and build up back to the top (you will be there sooner or later), meanwhile don't be a plastic fan and be a winner fan instead, trying to win everything you can.

Of course, football wise, coach Mourinho scaled down until he found a desperate club he could actually push up a bit. Yet, more than football, it is the accomplishment in making a full stadium vibrant again and supporting him in full, which is something he really missed after so much poison (given and taken) in the last decade. He seems reconciled, it will not last long enough, yet it is a feel good story both parties needed at this time. Roma won very little, in their history, but Spurs comparison is not fair… more Arsenal, if you like, for their distinctive style, the number of great players who played for them, and the vibe emanating from their crowd in their stadium.

How has Smalling been this season? He looked dreadful in that Europe League game at OT, though to be fair he had just recovered from injury, but physically he looked shot that night.

Roma and Jose seem to be a match made in heaven. He tends to do his best work at clubs that go under the radar. Chelsea the first time (when everyone expected the title to be fought between us and Arse), Inter Milan, and maybe now Roma.

Not fussed if he wins it or not mind you.

Oh I don’t mind people “loving” Jose.

It’s the He Took Us To Second And If He’d Been Backed He’d Have Won The League brigade that I can’t be doing with.

Yeah, how can anyone believe that he would have won the league when we were so bad and City/Pool were consistently getting 90+ points.

I'm sure there are few who believe he would have won the league had we got Perisic in 2017-18 season.

Often injured, but when he plays makes the difference

Cheers, only 32 as well, so should have another couple of years in him at a high level. A pity he picked up all those injuries almost as soon as the permanent transfer was finalized, dropped off the radr for many but has had an inspiring career from where he started from.

If we had got Perisic and (inevitably) still failed, they’d just move on to some other imagined slight or injustice. Maguire?

The Toxic Dressing Room brigade stay quiet over the fact that it was Jose that signed Pogba, or at least was happy with the club signing him.

It’s pathetic, it reminds me of what Liverpool fans used to be like back when they were winning feck all.

I mean you can say nice things about one person without at the same time not also saying nice things about somebody else. You know this right?

You can also not say nice things about one person, especially when said person is being a hypocrite.

He's still a good manager and I wouldn't be surprised if he reignited his career and got back to the top. When he ends his career he'll be talked about as one of the greats.

Yeah, I'm not sure people understand.

If you join a club that has never won a European trophy in their entire existence, and with that kind of fanbase and club and city culture as context, then delivering their first European trophy in their history is something emotional for the fans, and probably for Jose if he's wrapped up in the culture of it all. Not only that, but it's delivering unprecedented history to a club that hasn't so much as sniffed the Cup Winner's Cup before, let alone the CL or UEFA Cup.

He knows that if he can deliver a European trophy, he'd be immortalised in the eyes of the fans.

How the mighty have fallen...just a couple of years ago he would have scoffed at something like the Conference League.

Too bad he didn't evolve with the game, ironically becoming a dinosaur himself. Expecting his career to end on a whimper.

It's unprecedented because this cup didn't exist before this year. It's not like we can say that every other Roma manager tried and failed to win this cup.

Exactly, it's a never ending loop. Player x replaced by player x and the same arguments repeat.

Still good in tackling + experience + decent pace makes him quite solid (at least in italy and europa league level)

I'm no expert on Italian football but I was surprised when I looked at Roma's trophy cabinet: only three league titles but a pretty big domestic cup team (9 Coppa Italia). Fair to say they're a 'Spurs level' club in their own league?
We haven't been really lucky in the last 20 years. From 2005-6 to 2016-17 we came second 7 or 8 times. When we had a good squad, we were up against record-breaking teams (Mourinho's Inter and Conte's Juventus). The 2009-10 season, when Inter won the treble, is the one that hurts the most. We came so close to win that scudetto. :(

They lost 2 european finals. A UEFA cup final to inter, and most famously the European Cup in 1984. In Rome. On penalties. They also won a Fairs Cup, which is not recognized by UEFA, but still

But yes. Winning this trophy would be huge for them

Why is he crying?
He explained it in the post-match press conference.

"My emotion was for everyone who loves this club. The fans, the players, the owners.
"This team spirit, we started building it in our summer camp in Portugal on the first day, and it's built up since then, day after day - this game is icing on cake.
"This victory belongs to everyone - it's a family win. Everyone played their part.
"I've had the honour of playing in more prestigious finals but the feeling of joy with everyone involved made me feel special really.
"This is a giant club without a trophy room to match the social importance of the club.
"I'm so happy for every single one of them. I will remember forever the people on the street, the ladies on the balconies, the kids lining the street. This to me means so much to me.
"Rome is a yellow and red city. In one year I feel it and tomorrow you will notice this on the streets, Rome is yellow and red.
"I made a little contribution to this and it makes me happy. My emotion was for everyone who loves this great club."

Rome is not Milan nor Turin. It's a totally different experience. You don't realize it until you're there.

This season he has been their best defender in my opinion better than Mancini or Ibanez. Has taken over the leadership role in defence in organising, talking etc due to being the most senior defender. Mancini is very good but have more occasional lapses in him due to being still young, Smalling not so much. Not world class or anything but much better than he was for us mainly due to the serie A and it’s slow nature. Surprisingly, he doesn’t even look that much awkward with the ball and is more brave in his passing than he was ever with us. All in all he is a solid 7/10 this season.

He could become the first manager to have won all three iterations of UEFA competitions (ucl with inter and Porto, europa with us and now the inaugural winner of the conference).
Won't be too bad.

That's class from Mourinho!

Mind, the old alligator is still selling himself higher than due, yet considering where you both were four months ago, it’s going to be a triumph… provided you win in Tirana.

He's put on a brave face for a long while but you can tell how much personal impact all the criticism of him in recent years has hurt him. Hope the guy wins it and is the first ever winner of the competition.
One thing that makes me happy for him is that Roma is actually playing some decent football.
He tried his usual defensive stuff early in the season, saw it didn't work and then switched formation and now his team plays more on the front foot.

Great quotes.

Happy for him
It didn't work out with us, and he left in a bad note. I really enjoyed the first season under him where we won a few trophies, and although we ended up 6th we played some good football and just remember missing a shit load of chances. Zlatan had 28 goals or something but missed so many sitters as did others.

I enjoyed going old Trafford even with a few frustrations. Second season turned near the end. The Sevilla game and the FA Cup final were tragic

Him being sacked before a final was ridiculous even though their run to the final had something like a bye, and then lower teams. But it's still a final for spurs and you would want him as the underdog manager in that game

The question to him about eth was so silly too

That isn't really the same situation though is it?

With respect to Emery (who I actually really like), his peak has never been as high as Jose's has, has it? And his subsequent fall has not been anywhere near as low either because of that.

Emery was mocked in England by a group of idiots but generally I doubt people across European leagues changed their opinion of him much. Mourinho has gone from winning the CL with Porto, winning it with Inter, breaking records with Chelsea and Real Madrid.....to getting fired by Tottenham (and justifiably so, even if the timing of it was shite).

Fair to say that the peak of his career has been at literally the pinnacle of the sport and will have made some of his recent embarrassments (many of them self-inflicted) even harder for him.

It doesn't mean I have to feel sorry for him or that I want him back at Spurs or that I don't acknowledge that he descends into toxicity regularly when things go wrong. But things don't have to be so black and white. He can be both a monumental twat who's career has been on a downward trajectory for 7 years and also potentially overcome with emotion that something is going slightly right for him at his current job.

Ok. Time for a bit of honesty.
You mentioned City and Liverpool consistently getting 90+ points and that is impressive, even though they both have extremely good squads.
So which is more impressive.
City and Liverpool getting 90+ points.
Or Manchester United under Mourinho getting 81 points (and finishing 2nd) with the squad he had at that time.

Wonder if I will get a response.

They have good squads? You want me to post the squad inherited by Klopp and the money they spent compared to what Jose spent?

Also when Jose took over, ManUtd were ahead of Liverpool and finished on equal points with City, we were close to City. By the time Jose was sacked, both clubs were few levels above us. You want to pinpoint how and under whom the gap was created?

And that's with "time for bit of honesty" and "Wonder if I will get a response"

Wonder if I will get a response that answers the question.
Because you have not.

Getting close to 100 points three times is way more impressive than getting 81 points once with that United team and that's before applying any context.
