You guys are too concerned with height. He looks like a bulky guy. Look at the size of his calves and thigh.
Blind had a slender build and wasn't bullied.

I think we're more likely to go for pau Torres, the links have gone cold.
Wasn't there a tweet of lvg implying that he won't pick him if he wasn't getting regular playing time?
Don't think Timber really knows which way to go atm. Ajax development can only help him, likely to cement a place in the Netherlands squad if he keeps up the good form. Premier league could make or break him, if he makes it, he's set for life.

Especially if Ajax want in excess of 30mil for him, too risky and he is too small to play as a CB in the premier League

He would get monstered defending set pieces.

He’s probably young enough to defer for a season. Assuming he continues his progression at Ajax next season and has a decent enough World Cup showing, a top 4 finish with Ten Hag and we should still be one of the first teams he’ll look at joining in 2023.

Even if we sign Timber, I think it will be after we sell Bailly or probably be our 3rd signing. I have a feeling that we will use the current budget on that midfield and versatile forward first as we lost Matic, Pogba, Greenwood, and Cavani. I won't expect any legitmate news before we sort out one midfield and one versatile forward.

I'm hoping this picks back up after we hopefully sign de Jong. That has our full attention right now but, again hoping, he's the next one!

It's gone all quiet on this transfer. Maybe things pick up some pace after the internationals.

It wouldn't make sense to add a sixth center back to the squad when all current departures have been in midfield and attack, maybe later on in the window if we shift the likes of Bailly and Jones out.
The attack and midfield is way too light in my opinion.

I thought he was class but LVG was unhappy with his performance and criticized him in the post match for not following instructions.
LVG really cares about his bucket list.

I do think he's a better fit for the RCB position in LVG's back 3 than De Vrij, so it will be interesting to see who gets dropped.
Ake and Van Dyke ain't going nowhere.

Where did he play position wise? Looked a bit like an inverted full back at times

Pretty sure he said internationals then holidays, before making a decision.
That makes sense.

This transfer would rightly depend upon the departure of other CBs and how quickly we cover the other priority positions.

Nevertheless, he is someone who could cover a couple of positions like CB and RB. Hopefully, we wrap this one quick if we are in for him at all instead of dragging it for too long, as a good preseason is much needed. Our relations with Ajax have been good, so on that front negotiations shouldn't be too difficult.

Not wanting a guy because he's under six foot. Did I stumble onto bloody Tinder by accident?!

None of you better be fat, that's all I'm saying.

I think we've moved on from this one given his comments about wanting a guaranteed starting place (so he can play in the WC).

I hope ETH can convince him, but I've personally given up on this signing.

Main priority is De Jong and the midfield then a right sided attacker, ideally De Jong and Antony then someone in the mould of Sangare or someone who’d compliment De Jong in the midfield.

Right now we have Varane, Maguire, Lindelof, Bailly, Tuanzebe and Jones whilst a few coming through like Mengi, Fish and Bennett. I’d rather we bought a first choice right back and promoted Laird then got rid of AWB and Dalot over a centre back as I think bringing in De Jong and a midfielder to compliment him helps the defence massively.

If we hypothetically manage to bring in De Jong, another midfielder, Antony and a right back and manage to move on Bailly, Tuanzebe and Jones then I’m all for Timber coming in as he looks a massive talent and plays how ETH wants us to play but centre back is not a priority unless we manage to move the deadwood on.

It's whether we actually want a midfielder in the mould of Sangare I worry about, still not seen enough evidence of that yet

I'm not surprised it's gone quiet on the defender front.

We really need the likes of Bailly, Jones, Tuanzebe and AWB to leave before club feels comfortable bringing in defensive signings.

Midfield and attack are different as we're short in those areas in terms of numbers, we don't need to sell anyone to make space.

It's one thing having mere numbers, and quite another thing having quality in those numbers.

You can't rely on many of those players you mention to give either regular or quality games, so none should be much of a consideration for the squad.

I agree, but the club aren't going to have 7 first team centre backs on their books. They likely just want to see funds come in, wages off the books, and potential deals in place for outgoings before they commit to another huge money signing.

Those same defenders (for the most part) have gone from conceding 36 goals to 57 goals in three years. There is a high degree of probability that the defensive problems don't all lie at the hands of the four players in our defensive line who all look bad regardless of past history or current international form. I suspect that once we start to control play in midfield and implement a proper team defence, those defenders begin to look a lot more competent.

Having said that, I think we should be looking to replace Bailly and Jones but I don't think a Timber-priced defender is what we need in this window.

Obviously it's different watching a players individual highlights instead of the game itself as you don't get the feel of the flow of the game, but I was very impressed, too.

We all know how meticulous van Gaal is, though. What is a good performance to some isn't to him, and vice versa.

It will be interesting to see which 3 he goes with. Van Dijk is guaranteed, and Aké has been consistently good for you. I've liked de Vrij since he was at Lazio but Timber just seems special.

I mean, I hope you're wrong because I want Timber alongside de Jong to elevate our build-up and general possession play, but don't call yourself that! You are a valued member of this community.

In a back 3 next to de Vrij and Aké

I’m pretty sure you’re right. It’s just not really a deal that makes much sense when you look past the shiny new toy aspect. At least not until there’s a few departures.
